OH paid £6 for my namesake

Sainsbury's call them wild garlic something or other and kyiv instead of kiev (huh?) but even so, OUCH.

I hope they taste like spun gold.

He has ADHD and it wouldn't occur to him to look at the price. He tends to only study the price of extortionate gluten free food when he wants to whinge about prices (£3.60 loaves of bread - we have neither the space or reliable equipment to bake ourselves but mostly I just don't have storage for more stuff).

Anyway, even I wouldn't dream of two kievs being more than four quid and I probably wouldn't have looked at the price myself. I know they were £2 in 2020, it was the peak of my kiev eating frenzy.

(I prefer schnitzel these days)

Have you had any nasty shocks yourself lately?

I really ought to change my username, turns out it's very insensitive these days.

Loving the schnitzel vs kyiv disputes going on here. I just love breaded meats!

I have a violently upset tummy today, so it turns out my body can no longer handle the garlic content in two kyivs.

Ageing sucks.

I wouldn't swap OHs for all the breaded meats in the world.

Wait a mo - you ate both of them? That means my poncey Waitrose ones are a better deal, I can’t imagine anyone managing more than one of them.

Breakitinto3 · 05/12/2025 13:26

Wiener schnitzel is veal. In general shnitzel can be any meat depending on which country one eats it. It's even from mince somewhere.
Basically, breaded meat slice = schnitzel

Very interesting. Thanks

Yes, but not with anything else, and I had a marmite sandwich for dinner. I'm no slither of a woman, fyi.

The ingredients in the Waitrose ones sound overwhelmingly rich for me. They'd probably make me feel queasy.

So easy to make your own. Use gf flour, and gf bread crumbs.

HelloCheekyCat · 05/12/2025 13:48

Have you tried Olio for gluten free (and other) food?
It is location dependant but I haven't bought GF bread for months because I get it free on there (or my mum gets it for me, bless her).
Co op is also great for reduced GF stuff if you are lucky, I have about 6 packs of Warburtons pitta breads in the freezer, never paid more than 80p for a pack.
If you can get to Aldi their bread is really good and only £1.69 a loaf!!!

Kitchenbattle · 05/12/2025 13:49

I have started making my own now as I too found the GF ones ridiculously overpriced or overprocessed.

the garlic butter is easy enough if you have a blender- butter, mashed garlic and any herbs mixed together. Roll it into a sausage shape and put it in the freezer.

buy chicken fillets and make an incision in it to push in a slice of the frozen garlic butter. Flour, egg and bread it. Shallow fry and you are done!! Delicious.

make sure you make a good bit of garlic butter and just keep it in the freezer.

Meerkatmanor4 · 05/12/2025 13:50

Booths are the best.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 05/12/2025 13:50

Will somebody think of the poor chickens?!
Seriously though, I'm generally happy to pay a bit more for a decent quality, higher welfare product otherwise if feel a bit guilty.
I love a good schnitzel too! Sometimes pork or veal. Yum.

P00hsticks · 05/12/2025 13:55

ThirdStorm · 03/12/2025 16:00

They are a firm favourite of mine, the max I'll pay is £4 for the chicken breast ones. The Lidl ones are my favourites now but I will buy Sainsbury's if on offer.

Yes, we go for the cheap and cheerful chilled LIDL ones - an added bonus is that you can freeze them and they cook straight from frozen.

On the subject of Kyiv / Kiev - I'm old enough to remember when it was standard in the UK to use the colonial names of Peking, Bombay etc instead of the local names of Beijing and Mumbai...

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 05/12/2025 13:58

The Lidl and Aldi "posh" Kyivs are really nice.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 05/12/2025 14:10

Just here to say that homemade chicken schnitzel can be Kyiv'd and is delicious.

Unfortunately, we're in the arse end of nowhere. No GF goods at all in our Aldi, only a tiny co-op, no Olio, no decent M&S, no Waitrose, no Ocado, no Booths.

We also have an oven that is incapable of cooking - well, it can under cook, and it can over cook - and no storage space for a blender or even the assortment of GF baking goods I would like to have in the house. I had to chuck a load of them out when we moved and I've had to rearrange half the bloody house this week to find space for just a second toaster for the OH.

However, I will try the Lidl kyivs. The other half is going to have to wait a bit longer until he can have a GF one again, because our setup makes it impossible.

I will also do a NC soon, because I don't want to inadvertently upset anyone, and I was too ignorant to realise I might be doing so.

The best GF Chicken Kievs that I've found are Rosie & Jim, I think they stock them in Morrisons & Tescos, although they don't always have them. You may also need to wait until after Christmas as they seemed to have reduced the amount of GF chicken products in Tesco to make way for Christmas products.

Crucible · 05/12/2025 14:19

@KievLoverTwo We renamed them Chicken Kevs a long time ago.
Tesco used to make Tomato and Mozarella Kievs many many years ago, they were gorgeous but my god the calories.
I quite like M&S ones with the small bone because theyre very garlicky. Trouble is the airfryer absolutely honks after.

My problem with homemade is leaking butter while they cook.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that for the OH. I'm sure he'd be delighted to have a Kyiv.

Also, what a charming brand name :)

OP I went to our local farm shop a few weeks ago. I go there occasionally for fruit and veg as i like how it isn't all wrapped in plastic, and fresh bread

I bought a large beef tomato and a french baguette.

I didn't really register the price I paid until I was out the door.

£6.19

I have decided to take a break from popping in to the farm shop.

Redflagsabounded · 05/12/2025 14:29

Those ones are nice though, a whole stuffed chicken breast. The cheap ones are just big chicken nuggets with garlic butter inside...

BaronessBomburst · 05/12/2025 14:29

KievLoverTwo · 03/12/2025 15:43

Oh I see, M and S used to make an Issey Miyake perfume dupe called Isis. I never could find it again after it was renamed.

Thanks for the explanation. I just assumed they were trying to be poncey, so it is good to know.

It was renamed Aqua, then disappeared completely.

Schnitzel is veal

Not necessarily. A Wiener Schnitzel definitely is (although I’ve also seen restaurants offer Wiener Schnitzel / Viennese style Schnitzels with veal or pork).

But pork Schnitzels are very normal in the DACH countries…

O_O

We never come out of our farm shop less than £100 worse off, mostly because I end up buying expensive GF gravies, spice mixes, and £20 boxes of Guinness truffle chocolates.

We haven't been to one since February!

To be fair the standard sainsbury's Kyivs are £3 for two. So it's only because your DH got the fancy ones!

diddl · 05/12/2025 15:52

Ooh, chicken Kyiv, not had that for years!

I bought 3 fresh chicken schnitzel at the supermarket yesterday-9€.

Seems a lot to me as it's "almost a tenner", but I guess it isn't for something decent.

soupmaker · 05/12/2025 16:04

I bloody love a chicken kyiv but none of the ungrateful inhabitants of my house do. In fact it’s so long since I had one it was pre-war so they were Kiev’s then. I make chicken schnitzel every couple of weeks from scratch so may go rogue and make an kyiv for me. I have a butter loathing DD, the weirdo, so she’ll not touch anything that’s been near butter. I lie about my mash, and risotto!

TheOpalReader · 05/12/2025 16:29

Costco do the best ones I've tried. Not super cheap (£15ish for 6/8) but they're a proper chicken breast with loads of garlic butter and the breading is really nice. My favourite trick is to use some sourdough under the Kyiv whilst cooking and it'll soak up the garlic butter meaning you don't lose it to the oven tray and have a lovely side of garlic bread.
