I don't buy meat much these days, or freeze half a pack and use half padded with lentils. Chicken still a good option and tinned fish.

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 17/09/2025 23:23

Tube of OralB toothpaste was £9 in Sainsbury’s last week…I did not buy it.

Ive given up on chicken and eat Quorn instead now.

We have just come back from France.
Prices are on a par with UK prices.
Dairy, meat, fruit and veg - all similar to here.
So nothing to do with Reeves.

Yes but historically food has been quite a bit more expensive in France (I've lived in both countries) It's a real change for UK prices to be the same, and in France the quality of the food is often higher

We went 90% vegetarian and it helps A LOT

If Tommy Robinson cared about the poor, he'd have organised a protest about rising food prices

A note for the flag shaggers on mn

Love this. I see where you’re coming from.

MusicalCarbuncle · 17/09/2025 23:36

I think it’s incredibly naive to think that profiteering is not playing a major, major role. Big business discovers it can charge more and people will still buy stuff …
Check out Walmart (Asda), Morrisons, Tesco PLC, Sainsbo 5 year share price trends. If it was all about rising costs then the share price would be flatter. It’s not - it’s about increasing market confidence and returns to investors.

Bless you for ensuring the famous mumsnet chicken made an entrance.

Coming from England with some much needed sanity for Tommy Robinson's lot 😭

Price of deodorant is through the roof here in Ireland

everychildmatters · 18/09/2025 00:05

I'm shocked (and disappointed) at the price of Maltesers!!! A diddy box is £3 in Tesco!!!

The cost of chocolate is putting the brakes firmly on my choccy habit. There's no way I'm spending £2.75 on a bag of Twirl bites.

This sort of price rise may be the thing that eventually makes me lose weight. I suppose that would be the good side effect of the grim cost of everything!

Hohumdedum · 18/09/2025 00:07

Chocolate is expensive at the moment because of terrible harvests in West Africa. The price of cocoa has doubled or something in the last two years. I buy massive tubs of chocolate buttons - in December they were £50, now £75!

I've felt fairly immune to the rising cost of food until the last few months. Now I'm really noticing it affecting my spending. Struggling to keep the bills under £120/week.

KievLoverTwo · 18/09/2025 00:10

I am currently grateful not to be living in America where coffee has gone from $8 to $22 thanks to Trump's tariffs.

It's not just the prices that are galling - it's that supermarkets used to be in such fierce competition that you would GET stuff.

I dug out an old email from Sainsbury's recently, sent in 20 or 21 "we miss you, here is £8 off your next shop of £60 or more."

These days, it's "spend £130 or more and get triple points." What's that worth in monetary terms? You probably couldn't buy a can of pop with it.

So, yeah, things are pants. But I am eternally grateful not to be American atm. Iirc at one point last year they were paying $10 for 6 eggs thanks to avian flu too.

boopthatdog · 18/09/2025 00:25

I just pulled up an online shopping order from September last year - 500g of 20% fat mince has gone from £2.75 to £4.25 in that time 🤯

It's almost like they are targeting the one thing they know people rely on to make budget meals.

The Aldi Oaties are really nice. Can’t remember the exact price but under £1

Lidl also have 100% fruit jam for less then £3 a jar. Just pure fruit. Its sharp, as it would be without added sugar but is so good

Northquit · 18/09/2025 00:46

I couldn't see any 3 for £10 meat offers on Morrisons shopping.

Bless you for ensuring the famous mumsnet chicken made an entrance.

I never understand the hate towards using a chicken on this site

Im 62 , when I was a child only the middle classes could afford a chicken, beast we got were quarters

So of course when we bought a chicken and every inch was used

Im from the generation that used to buy a half pig - and bagsy the head and trotters to make brawn

A large chock is near on 2 kg . take the bones out - very light for the size of the bird, you probably have 1.5lg of edible meat. - plenty for 6 adult meals with veg and carbs. And why waste the bones - that's chicken stock and whilst I know there are those that will strip the bones again for adding to a risotto, I will, to enhance the dogs dinner

Dont knock using every inch of an animal that we had bred to feed us

Yes I do have hens, yes we do get roos, yes I send then for processing and yes I ear them

A dozen eggs are not £10. Don’t be so ridiculous.

This has been explained multiple times in the thread - eggs used to come in the dozen and there are 10 now instead of 12. It’s now saying they cost £10!

Try Savers for toiletries, usually half the price of the supermarkets

The one stop shop for those needing to budget has been long gone

My wee town I shop lidle, Home bargains, Savers and then Tesco. I need a defibrillator if I drive to the bigger town and see Sainsbury's prices

Seriously Id go back to the chicken and eat less off it rather then eat UP crap

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 18/09/2025 02:01

I say we all go back to small holdings and farming our land, escaping this capitalist hellhole of grinding down our souls for not enough pay, and initiating a barter culture for home grown produce. Who's with me?... anyone? No. Just me and my 2 pathetic home grown tomatoes then. 🙈

Obsesetits · 18/09/2025 02:51

Money is such a weird man-made thing.

You mean the majority are starving, going without, begging for free food from shelters because they haven’t got ‘money’ on a magic card, some metal coins or bits of plastic that day you can have that food?

the government can’t ‘afford’ to fund absolutely anything… when realistically they could just print some more of those nice plastic things they call notes.. or type in a few more 0’s online somewhere.

the fact people are left to starve, committing suicide because of financial difficulty over a man-made thing that’s easily rectified is absolutely insane to me. What a world to live in.

£4.50 per meal per person is insane.

What are you buying?

This. Are you buying ready meals?

It's getting harder to stay within budget and provide decent healthy food for me & ds. I home-make all our bread (buy a sack of flour from local mill), and all our preserves (blackberries, crab apples, damsons are free). I cook everything from scratch, grow some of our fruit & veg, and freeze as much as I can. I trade home made jam for eggs from a neighbour.

But £4 per meal per head is daft. Tonight we had a risotto with hake and chorizo, served with peas and sweetcorn. Cost was 70p (hake), 62p (chorizo), 20p (risotto rice), 15p (veg), then fruit for dessert - about £1.75 per head.

My budget for two adults is £65 a week, including basic toiletries and cleaning materials. . It must be harder for those without a garden.
