This. Are you buying ready meals?

It's getting harder to stay within budget and provide decent healthy food for me & ds. I home-make all our bread (buy a sack of flour from local mill), and all our preserves (blackberries, crab apples, damsons are free). I cook everything from scratch, grow some of our fruit & veg, and freeze as much as I can. I trade home made jam for eggs from a neighbour.

But £4 per meal per head is daft. Tonight we had a risotto with hake and chorizo, served with peas and sweetcorn. Cost was 70p (hake), 62p (chorizo), 20p (risotto rice), 15p (veg), then fruit for dessert - about £1.75 per head.

My budget for two adults is £65 a week, including basic toiletries and cleaning materials. . It must be harder for those without a garden.

Your portions must be tiny. This sounds like Jack Monroe-type costings!

Eta: I misread DS for DH, so perhaps your DS is still small?

I haven't bought olive oil since 2020, we had to switch to veg or sunflower oil, just cant justify the cost.

Tinned soup is another thing that seems to really expensive now, used to be cheap lunch but heinz tomato soup is £1.70 per can! We're a family of 4 with 2 teen boys so a tin of soup won't go very far.

I rarely buy Heinz soup now. I’d always stick to Heinz even as a student when the rest of the trolley was own brand.

I say we all go back to small holdings and farming our land, escaping this capitalist hellhole of grinding down our souls for not enough pay, and initiating a barter culture for home grown produce. Who's with me?... anyone? No. Just me and my 2 pathetic home grown tomatoes then. 🙈

I would love to do this, it’s my plan for retirement, not sure I have the skills though

MorningLarkEchoes · 18/09/2025 07:25

In M&S yesterday, those tiny snack pots of fruit were £2.20. A pack containing two small lunch rolls was £5.50. Prices have definitely gone up and I will be taking a packed lunch from now on.

Bjorkdidit · 18/09/2025 07:26

I never understand threads like this. There are cheaper options to just about every single 'OMG X is so expensive' quoted on this thread.

We get a dozen (well 2 x 6) free range eggs for under £3 in M&S. Other supermarkets do the same.

Not so long I bought a litre of EVOO from there for £9, yes it's more expensive than it used to be but not £14 like a PP said.

Coffee has always cycled between 'on offer from a stupid price' and a stupid price, so just buy it when it's on offer.

Pork, chicken or turkey mince is half the price of beef, so buy that instead. Better for us and the planet.

M&S own brand soup is 50 p to £1 and much nicer than Heinz.

I could go on. We buy about 2/3 of our shopping from Aldi and the rest from M&S, avoiding all their comedically high priced stuff, like over £2 for a bit of cut up fruit, but a lot of their basics like soup, beans, veg, bread, milk, some cheese, eggs, are the same price or even cheaper than other supermarkets, and good quality so feels like a treat. Plus they have good reductions - we get a lot of meat for the freezer from there too.

Yes, prices have gone up, but no-one's forced to pay the prices quoted on here.

I’m with you. In addition to gorgeous sweet tomatoes we have chard, cucumber, potatoes and lots of herbs.
I plan to grow more next year.
I do appreciate my garden and I know everyone isn’t so lucky.
I keep my elderly neighbours supplied as well and they love it.
Can’t afford meat but don’t want to eat it.
We eat a lot of chickpea burgers, lentils, legumes etc with a side salad of freshly picked tomatoes and cucumbers from our ‘cucumber and tomato glut.’ 😂

ivegotthisyeah · 18/09/2025 07:28

For all you choc lovers Sainsbury’s currently have the cadburys chocolate pouches on offer for 97p until Sunday - usual price £2,49!!!!!

Lazytiger · 18/09/2025 07:30

1kilo bag of Illy coffee beans previously £16 and frequently £12 on nectar even during covid. Now £22.
posh crisps. £1.50 and £1 on special. Now £2.65 and £2 on special.
Illy is pretty weak stuff anyway so I don’t miss it and buy whatever is on special and my crisp addiction is now cured!
Now shop at butchers as supermarket meat quality is not good. It is tasteless and watery. West London seems to cost more than some quotes on here (chicken £20) 400g mince £7 but the taste is amazing and a little goes a long way.

Because over time the cost of everything is trending up and most people’s wages aren’t keeping up. People’s budgets are getting squeezed more and more. It might not be affecting you yet, but some families are having to resort to things like buying their weekly shop on the credit card.

Nannyfannybanny · 18/09/2025 07:33

Agree,we have got away from basics. People eat too much, out of season, and waste food.I'm not posting how much I spend or how long a chicken lasts (had a roast chicken Sunday, dogs are finishing it this morning, changed my mind,) excuses, people don't have time to cook! I still had ration books in my childhood,it's been said countless times, the post war diet, was the most healthy, just enough of what was necessary, few treats or luxuries,I'm not advocating giving them all up. If you haven't got it,you can't spend it. You can get a packet of lettuce seeds for under a quid 2000 seeds. I always batch cook, make my own soup, much healthier.I do grow a lot of fruit and veg. I got a bottle of olive oil in Lidl last week just under £5. £9 for toothpaste!! Just use salt or coal (joking)

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 18/09/2025 07:33

Shoplifting costs are also being passed on to the rest of us too.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 18/09/2025 07:35

It is completely crazy. Since 2019, most of the things I buy (or used to) have gone up £1-2 each, if not more.

I used to happily buy unnecessary or luxury food bits that I don't now because the prices are insane - even the sale price is more than it used to cost. Same with things like eating out and days out.

It feels a bit like rolling our eyes listening to our grandparents say 'in my day we didn't have all this, X would be the treat for the month!'

BleinhamOrange · 18/09/2025 07:39

Seasonal food is less relevant when food has to be imported. The Uk has not been able to grown sufficient food to feed itself for a long time, even if we turned over all spaces to food production. Population growth (and yes that means immigration) is making that worse.

Please tell me where I can get basics such as broccoli and cucumber that have doubled in price since 2020 -

cupfinalchaos · 17/09/2025 21:48

As for olive oil.. the one I used to buy is £14.. not long ago was £7.99!

DS1 split half a bottle of olive oil yesterday. Told him he owed me a tenner!

ChristmasFluff · 18/09/2025 07:46

It's profiteering, pure and simple.

Tesco got over 3 billion in profit last year, Sainsbury and Asda 1 billion, Lidl and Aldi more reasonable profits in the millions.

There is no need for companies to be making profits in the billions (except shareholder greed and 'the markets' - a total shaft of the majority of the population), at the expense of their customers. But no, let's blame shoplifters and people who fancy strawberries in December.

Totally agree
MSE always states to go down a brand but I have never been a brands person
Waitrose and M&S own brands are usually cheaper and nicer .
You also don't need a small holding to bake own bread or make soup.
Breadmakers/ soup makers or a pan cost very little if you look on eBay/ FB marketplace

If you don't have the time or energy a decent nice roll is is 50p in the Coop or even cheaper in Lidl.

Can't believe the prices of M&S rolls and sandwiches now.
Just No

Crazyworldmum · 18/09/2025 07:47

Meat is going up at a catastrophic rate , I think eventually governments will try and push the bugs and synthetic lab grown meat on us . I paid £6 for 3 very small turkey steaks on Asda . Used to be cheap meat .

BadActingParsley · 18/09/2025 07:48

@Bjorkdiditi know what you are saying, but we cook from scratch mostly, buy own brand ((often M&S as their stuff is good quality and the basics aren’t ridiculous) but we’ve really noticed an increase of about 25 to 30% in the basic food bill.

TattooStan · 18/09/2025 07:48

My husband works away monday-friday and has, in recent weeks, made the switch from cooking his own evening meals to eating at the subsidised staff restaurant. It's about £5 a night for a large, nutritionally balanced, interesting hot meal, and while that used to be massively more expensive than home cooking, now the difference is negligible.

Bridesmaiddress · 18/09/2025 07:51

Duckyfondant · 17/09/2025 21:10

It was mince that opened my eyes too. There is still cheap stuff on the lowest shelves but I'm cautious of it after finding so many bones in pre-prepared chicken etc lately

Yep same. I picked up 500g of Tesco lean mince yesterday, yellow sticker winner.

The price on the sticker was £3.80, I did a double take - the shelf price was £5.80.

BitterSweetBirthday · 18/09/2025 07:52

Prices are on the rise but I've just got back from Belgium and The Nedderlands and the price of meat there was much higher than here......and that was shopping in Lidl. Chicken breast was 18 euros a kilo (bog standard).

LizzieSiddal · 18/09/2025 07:53

Brexit has also made food more expensive. We can’t move food in and out of Europe without huge costs because we voted to leave (well 48% did nit).

We were warned this would happen but people didn’t seem to care!

R0ckandHardPlace · 18/09/2025 07:55

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 18/09/2025 06:43

Which flag are you referring to?? The Left have been shagging ths flag of terrorists for years now. If the Left cared about children and the vulnerable they would have been marching to help the people in poverty in their own country rather than float waving on behalf of rapist murdering terrorists

We did, you just weren’t listening. I went on many anti-austerity marches about ten years ago. But nobody cared because CoL wasn’t affecting them yet. People just called us Commies and Trots, so we gave up. But I always knew that eventually people would sit up and take notice once it started to affect the middle classes. I just didn’t expect it to take so long.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/09/2025 21:26

If Tommy Robinson cared about the poor, he'd have organised a protest about rising food prices

A note for the flag shaggers on mn

Well it used to be the left who stuck up for the vulnerable and poor in our society. Where are they all when wee Agnes is struggling with the col crises. Too busy championing other causes.
I cannot believe the lack of voices on this matter.
