What do you think the older people have been eating all this time? I live in an agricultural country, we've been eating meat and chicken in large quantities for many decades without young people getting bowel cancer the way they are now.

I am older and I don't eat vast quantities of chicken and meat. never have donev
Just normal portions
Pp was talking about half a chicken each per meal -that's disordered eating

Yeah they do, like wearing masks protects you from covid 😁

Feel free to educate yourself https://www.iastatedigitalpress.com/mmb/article/id/13040/

Lots of proper research on the subject, not the "public health agency" brainwashing.

But I suppose it's good for some to keep the plebs cognitively struggling so the less meat they eat, the better.

Edited

I don't think you've understood that study at all. In fact, I don't think you've read beyond the title.

Consumerism.

I make mine in a big saucepan. Chuck in ingredients, stock cubes, water, and simmer for 20 mins.

Simple.

We can agree on that.

I don't think just it's laziness. I think it's not having a clue how to get started. It's intimidating and overwhelming if you don't know the first thing about gardening.

Maybe a bit of both. Gardening is not rocket science.

My DF tells how when he was young Chicken was an expensive treat to be eaten on high days and holidays only. One the other hand they did eat a lot of cheap fish….

It's not disordered eating...I have a teenage ds and a DH...they could both eat half a chicken easily and do sometimes. They are both a healthy weight and active. No eating disorders.

Soup makers are quite nifty. I don't know where mine came from (charity shop or a friend's house) but it's quite reliable to chuck everything in and come back half an hour later to season and serve.

Where are they getting the inflation figures of 3 or 4 % from? The things I've just happened to notice are: 3 pack peppers £1.09 to £1.89, Ferrero Rocher £4.50 to £5.50 (and that's on special), Aberdeen angus mince £4.50 now £6. Food inflation is more like 10% plus!

Food inflation was 5.1%, not the lower figure.

They put 500 food items into a virtual basket.

Mostly they are basics: dried pasta, sugar, milk, butter, cheese. Given that your average supermarket probably stocks 20,000 different items and brands on their shelves, woefully inadequate doesn't even begin to cover it. They don't give AS if the smallest box of maltesers has gone up from £1 in 2020 to £3 now, or tiny pedal bin liners from 60p to £2.40, they only care what their 500 items cost. If they measured every supermarket good sold and published the numbers, it would cause widespread outrage and panic, people would spend less, and the supermarkets would pay less tax.

Works well for the supermarkets though, huh?

DH and I have both lost weight over the past year or so - DH because he's now diabetic and me because I pretty much only eat three meals a day and nothing in between meals.
The change in diet has helped both of us but it still isn't cheap and we have changed our buying habits. We have had to as there is so much hidden sugar in processed food. I don't like chocolate and DH is restricted to dark chocolate/high cocoa content. Lidl do mini bars of dark chocolate in packs of four but even they have pretty much doubled in price - it's a shame because it's one of the few treats that DH is allowed.
I'll be making more soups in future as tinned soups have rocketed in price Lidl tinned soups were 50p per tin last year now 62p ish. Shopping in Iceland even with the pensioners discount has rocketed and much of their food has been reduced in size which all helps with the weight loss but isn't necessarily value for money. Many of the offers in Iceland are for 'beige' foods which is probably most helpful to families. I usually order my meat from an online butcher but a friend took me to Costco a few months ago - where for a fair amount of initial outlay - the meat was of exceptional quality and value. Must ask her when she is next going!!
We have also been growing stuff in the garden - but it's very hit and miss. Great potato harvest last year from three bags but pathetic this year, tomatoes - rubbish last year but gone mad this year. Rocket - not even a green leaf! And only one cut and come again salad leaf grew this year. Not even enough to put on a sandwich!! Strawberries enough for a few bowlfuls each. Decided to try cauliflower this year - my seedlings have been stripped of their leaves so that's a dead loss. If something grows it's a bonus but it's done for the enjoyment and achievement (when successful!)
But in keeping with many here - am shocked at how much food costs now. 😮

@Ubertomusic oh babe honestly? That article is a mess.
They call it a “systematic review,” but only end up using 9 studies out of 241. That’s not exactly confidence-inspiring. And the age range they lump together — from 3 months to 17 years — is wild. You can’t seriously compare a toddler’s brain development to a teenager’s and expect meaningful results.

The findings are all over the place:
42.8% of variables showed improvement
1.4% showed no effect
35.7% showed a decrease — mostly in children with HIV
And then they exclude the HIV-positive kids from the final analysis to make the results look better. That’s textbook cherry-picking.

They also don’t explain what the cognitive measures actually were. IQ? Memory? Attention span? No clue. Just vague references to “variables,” which makes it hard to trust any of the conclusions.

It reads more like a pro-meat opinion piece than solid science. If they want to make a strong case, they need better data, clearer methods, and way more transparency. The fact that over a third of outcomes worsened, and nearly a quarter showed no change, suggests the impact is far from consistent.
Calling it a systematic review feels generous. It’s more like a selective summary with a clear bias.

Cutting out carbs and eating vast quantities of meat -protein is disordered
I'm sure they can but it doesn't mean it's good for you.
I mean I could probably eat a whole cake...

I never said they cut out carbs. When you go to nandos you'll see you can order a quarter of a chicken or half a chicken as a standard meal with side dishes. So appetites will vary but no it's not disordered.

HairsprayBabe · 18/09/2025 11:33

@Comedycook if your family are eating 500g of meat in one go regularly that is pure greed - no-one needs five times the recommended serving size - 500g of roast chicken (without the bones of course) is over 1000 calories why would you encourage that!

I ate an entire extra hot chicken from Nandos while pregnant. It's definitely doable.

We have just come back from France.
Prices are on a par with UK prices.
Dairy, meat, fruit and veg - all similar to here.
So nothing to do with Reeves.

But much better quality.

Its a joke and not a funny one.

I am veggie , but the cost of eggs , tinned pulses, fresh stuff (fruit and veg) as well as staples like bread, milk and cereals are going up weekly !
Coffee is probably my biggest luxury :(

No not in every meal...but yes if presented with half a chicken or we went to nandos for lunch, they would order half a chicken each and eat the lot quite easily. As for encouraging it....my DH is an adult and can eat what he wants and my ds is 17 and can also make such decisions.

And there you have proved the point
Nandos is the cheapest, most miserable chicken
Packed full of crap

I’ve never been to Nando’s! Going for the first time soon when I go back to see our daughter’s family as our little grandson loves it there.

Will look forward to it now. My husband can’t stand fatty meat or chicken skin. I love it. Quarter or half a chicken and a nice fresh salad will be just the ticket, so thanks for that 😁

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/09/2025 11:40

Quite a lot of salt, probably but with an otherwise pretty good diet, I can take that once in a while. What else is added (would really like to know)?

Unknown25 · 18/09/2025 11:41

I have an allotment. They’re not cheap, compost, netting, seeds/plants fertiliser. It all adds up. It probably cost us more than it would have just to buy the fruit and veg, not including our time as they require a lot of in out which is difficult with full-time work and kids etc.

As I said, there are plenty of research on the subject, feel free to find them. I'm a neuroscientist and I know what I'm talking about. I'm also a parent of a disabled person who refused to eat meat around 4yo - it has massive health consequences, bone problems, iron deficiency, weight deficiency etc. You cannot supplement some elements contained in meat with anything else. I counted it myself, you would need to eat literally kilos of greens three times a day to have a similar intake, our digestive system cannot do that. Artificial supplements are not working. I could go on but it's pointless.

The current "green" (not actually green) brainwashing about meat will 100% damage health outcomes for younger generations.

But who cares.

HairsprayBabe · 18/09/2025 11:42

@NamechangeNightNurse I used to work at nandos - the chickens are barn raised broilers and sent to slaughter at around around 7 weeks so they are smaller than your average supermarket roaster chicken, so easier to eat a whole one than one from Tesco - not filled with crap though, just normal marinaded chicken
