Family of 4 - how much water per month?

NoMoreHotHols · 27/08/2025 09:36

I’ve just received my revised monthly water bill - £50 per month. The water company is saying this is a revised bill as they’ve just made an estimate in January.
To me this sounds way too much (the bills says it’s the equivalent of 3.5m3 per day which would be loads).
How much water do you use per day?
I’ve been worried that the house is leaking water since we moved in, we’ve been paying more since day one. We don’t bath/shower every day, the WM/DW isn’t on every day, I don’t water the garden etc.

We are a family of 3 and ours has just gone up to £90!

I queried it with Severn Trent.

sunshinedaises · 27/08/2025 11:00

Family of 4 and its £75 per month

WinchSparkle80 · 27/08/2025 11:02

Family of 4, £155 a month - Southern Water 😞

2 years ago it was £74 a month, I don’t believe we use twice as much water

MiddleAgedDread · 27/08/2025 11:03

3.5m3 per day is a huge amount. Average daily water use is quoted as around 450litres for a family of 4 i.e. 0.45m3.
If you've got a water meter then turn everything off and see if it's still running. If it is, you've got a leak or faulty meter.

Early3Rise · 27/08/2025 11:57

£30 a month, family of 4, conscious effort to reduce water use

jennymac31 · 27/08/2025 12:23

OP - do you have a water meter?

Our bill is £35 a month, family of 4.

I know, the figure is apparently this much because it was a catch-up from when they couldn’t read it in Feb.
We try to save water.

Do you have a record of the readings and do you ever read it yourself? Sounds like you’ve been under paying for the amount you use so they’ve increased the payments to make up the shortfall. It still seems like a huge amount though.

4 people in the household most of the time and my water bill has just gone up to £150 per month

Bjorkdidit · 28/08/2025 05:11

Water has gone up hugely so £50 a month is probably now below average.

Your water company will have a calculator on its website where you can enter details of your showering and towel washing habits and it will work out how much your usage and hence cost should be.

SunnyD4ys · 28/08/2025 05:51

£50 a month doesn't sound bad to me. When you saying you've been paying more since you moved in what so you mean? What is it more than? Water prices have gone up recently

DongDingBell · 28/08/2025 06:50

Our bill tells us a family of 4 uses 75m3 every 6 months on average - 12.5m3 a month/ 0.4m4 a day.

We use more like 108m3 every 6 months. Not sure how - I can't figure out where we're use extra water - which is around 0.6 m3 a day.

Your 3.5m3 a day is massive - but your bill is surprisingly low for that usage.

AlexandraPeppernose · 28/08/2025 06:50

We are £150. Family of 5. Use average of 0.8 per day but water the garden and do the washing loads

Sellenis · 28/08/2025 07:37

It depends on your water company. It varies hugely around the country. I pay £26 a month, unmetered, up north.

Anonymous23456 · 28/08/2025 07:40

Ours is £89 per month.

Scooby2024 · 28/08/2025 07:40

Family of 3 and I work away a lot and it's still £74 a month. Gone up from £46 a month.. Thanks Yorkshire water 🙃🙃

Tcateh · 28/08/2025 07:42

Mines 65, for me. South west water.
The taking away the water from the house cost is huge.
Forgotten the correct terminology.

Ohreallyreally23 · 28/08/2025 07:43

Also a family of 4. My water bill went up astonishingly high. 200 m3 for 6 months, so 33m3 per month. That only would equal 1m3 per day ish, so yours is excessive.

We realised we had a leak. The water company asked to do a meter reading, not use water for a few hours, then do another reading. It was using 10L every hour without me using water.

It should go back down massively now. Perhaps do the same test?

Unmetered water costs depend mostly on your rateable value so can't be compared with metered costs at all

Letstheriveranswer · 28/08/2025 12:07

I'm a family of two adults and mine just went from £40 to £137, there is probably a leak which I am waiting for them to investigate though.
We have 2-3 x 5 minute showers per day, don't flush every time, laundry 2-3 times a week, economical small dishwasher 1-2 times daily and I use a water butt to water garden, not a hose.

I think the £40 was about right for two so £40 for a family is very reasonable.
My neighbour lives alone and pays £50 and doesn't even think about saving water, turning taps off etc.

Er yes...

Did you misread my post maybe?

genesis92 · 28/08/2025 13:57

£100 a month, family of 4. It’s ridiculous

Leedsfan247 · 28/08/2025 17:59

Don’t you have a meter??

Justbobbins · 28/08/2025 18:00

Just me. £30 monthly. United Utilities.
