Family of 4 - how much water per month?

NoMoreHotHols · 27/08/2025 09:36

I’ve just received my revised monthly water bill - £50 per month. The water company is saying this is a revised bill as they’ve just made an estimate in January.
To me this sounds way too much (the bills says it’s the equivalent of 3.5m3 per day which would be loads).
How much water do you use per day?
I’ve been worried that the house is leaking water since we moved in, we’ve been paying more since day one. We don’t bath/shower every day, the WM/DW isn’t on every day, I don’t water the garden etc.

One adult and one teen girl and mines going up to £76 per month, and increase of £50 😭

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/08/2025 18:09

Given that 1m³ is a 1000 litres and a regular size bathtub takes about 100 litres that is 35 baths a day!
Turn everything off in the house including the internal stop tap. Go to the meter. If there's movement on the meter then you have a leak somewhere between it and the house. Turn the internal stop tap back on. Go back out to the meter. If it's moving with nothing using water indoors then there's an internal leak.

£50 sounds about right, water prices have gone up loads.
Mine is £33 per month, two adults. 0.27 units a day. Getting a meter helped a lot with the cost.

If you suspect a leak, turn everything off and then check your meter.

Is it 3.5m3 per day, or is that what they are charging you for in this period because they under-charged in the past?

RaininSummer · 28/08/2025 18:43

Christ ...two of us out all day and on a meter and it's 100 pounds a month.

Kag13 · 28/08/2025 18:50

Our water bill has just risen a lot. When I checked the previous bill the rates charged for standing charge and useage have gone up by about 30%, so that will be a big part of any rise.
also the hot summer will have increased water useage in more showers, more washing I suspect but the big factor is that they have all put their prices up by a lot.

lilkitten · 28/08/2025 18:51

We're with South Staffs Water, £39.80 for a family of 4 but not on a meter. I read that a meter is only good if you have more bedrooms than occupants, but I gather you can't change it back after a meter has been installed, which if that were possible would be a good idea in your case

BluePine · 28/08/2025 19:00

We pay £65 a month. We’re a family of 4 but with dp’s kids goes up to 6.

our usage is in litres but it says our average usage is 430 litres a day

BluePine · 28/08/2025 19:00

Ours is on a metre and we’ve paid much less since it was put in!

Freysimo · 28/08/2025 19:00

I'm with Welsh Water, gone up to £50 from £28. Two of us, on a meter and I'm very sparing with water (retired) and our use is below average. I'm now in credit by £93! Phoning WW next week. Why should they have my money?

BluePine · 28/08/2025 19:01

Meter ffs!

Kerensa70 · 28/08/2025 19:21

SW water and that’s cheap to me!! Ours is double that 🙃

Theonewhogotthecake · 28/08/2025 20:10

outofofficeagain · 27/08/2025 09:38

We are a family of 3 and ours has just gone up to £90!

I queried it with Severn Trent.

Wow!

Theonewhogotthecake · 28/08/2025 20:11

We are a family of 4 and ours is £59

SWW costs are high due to tourism. We did receive a little help from govt until recently, as it's not us using it, or using the beaches, often!

Grammarnut · 28/08/2025 20:44

This is why I object to water meters and will never have one in my house!

Why do you object for paying for the water you use? Don't you mind that you might be paying more than you need to?

SunnyD4ys · 28/08/2025 22:01

Sellenis · 28/08/2025 13:52

Er yes...

Did you misread my post maybe?

Maybe, I thought you were comparing your unmetered cost with the OPs metered cost, have I misunderstood?

All of the water boards have significantly increased their charges this year. Severn Trent have increased their charges by 26%, I've heard that elsewhere the increases are even more.

Bjorkdidit · 29/08/2025 05:27

MiddleAgedDread · 27/08/2025 11:03

3.5m3 per day is a huge amount. Average daily water use is quoted as around 450litres for a family of 4 i.e. 0.45m3.
If you've got a water meter then turn everything off and see if it's still running. If it is, you've got a leak or faulty meter.

If this is true (I've never lived in a house with a water meter so don't know anything about typical volumes used) then the OPs figures still don't add up.

She's complaining about a £50 bill based in an apparently 8x the expected amount used.

As her bill is never only going to be under £10 pm, then it seems that billing, meter readings and the possibility of leakage still needs further investigation.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/08/2025 10:33

Would it be possible for you to show us the bit of the bill with the breakdown on it? (With personal information deleted).

I have worked in customer services for a water company in the past.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 29/08/2025 10:41

£78 a month here, on anglian water. 5 people.

NoMoreHotHols · 29/08/2025 13:44

Ohreallyreally23 · 28/08/2025 07:43

Also a family of 4. My water bill went up astonishingly high. 200 m3 for 6 months, so 33m3 per month. That only would equal 1m3 per day ish, so yours is excessive.

We realised we had a leak. The water company asked to do a meter reading, not use water for a few hours, then do another reading. It was using 10L every hour without me using water.

It should go back down massively now. Perhaps do the same test?

That sounds like a good way of testing, thank you.

Thank you for all the other posters as well, I do realise prices went up (I had regular updates about them), but looking at some of the other amounts I consider myself lucky. I’ll still check for leaks.

Letstheriveranswer · 28/08/2025 12:07

I'm a family of two adults and mine just went from £40 to £137, there is probably a leak which I am waiting for them to investigate though.
We have 2-3 x 5 minute showers per day, don't flush every time, laundry 2-3 times a week, economical small dishwasher 1-2 times daily and I use a water butt to water garden, not a hose.

I think the £40 was about right for two so £40 for a family is very reasonable.
My neighbour lives alone and pays £50 and doesn't even think about saving water, turning taps off etc.

Ouch, that’s a lot of water.

I just looked at our bill and it’s for 61m3 for the 6 months. (Still quite high I believe but I think the shower pumps blast out more water than I realise).

OP posts:
catlover123456789 · 29/08/2025 14:05

So I think from what you're saying, it's 0.35 per day, not 3.5. Unless you have a leak, I'd get that checked asap.

So yours is 335litres a day which sounds right for a family using as they like, you could reduce it but it's not outrageous.
