Child’s iPad birthday present

Jamiemark11 · 25/06/2025 00:20

After a very long time saving I managed to get my child a second hand iPad for his birthday
only 2 months later and somethings happened to the charging port land it’s not charging
I’ve been to some shops and the cheapest it’s going to cost to fox it is £45 but I bought the iPad second hand for £50 so this seems pointless
does anybody know of any places or people that give away their unwanted iPads for free or for a very low cost?
thank you
laura

My charging port repair was £100 so £45 seems a good price

I am unaware of anyone giving iPads away free though - sorry

elliejjtiny · 25/06/2025 01:05

I don't know what you want it for but I have a kindle fire that does everything I need it too. Not sure how much it was as I've had it a few years now

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/06/2025 01:44

The point probably needs cleaning out, try blue tag.

TBH though at £50 it must be very old and on its last legs.

why would someone give away a free iPad?

Jamiemark11 · 25/06/2025 08:47

Thank you all for your replies, it’s genuinely appreciated

it’s going to take me a good 5 months to save up for the £50 repairs but I think I’ll just have to but thought it was worth a short to see if anyone had any other ideas

have you looked up on YouTube how to clean a charging port? What type of iPad is it?

yestothat · 25/06/2025 11:05

Unless you have a friend or family member whose willing to give it to you then you won’t find one for free or for a lower cost.

if the iPad was only £50 and has problems after two months I would assume it’s either old or very used and it’s probably not worth paying the £45 to fix as something else will might go wrong soon after.

my DC have a kindle fire which I feel does everything a kid needs an ipad to do. You can get them from £100 new on Amazon, they’ve had it 2+ years and no problems.

Would a wireless charging pad work in the meantime? One of those that you put your phone on top of to charge without plugging it in. Not entirely sure if they work for iPads too but I can’t see why not

I assume that you’ve checked the lead , we all have iPads here , have had several between us and never had a charging port break but we’ve had plenty of duff leads . Alternatively have a look at CEX for a cheap replacement .

purplecorkheart · 25/06/2025 18:47

I would definitely look at a new lead and plug first. Even if you just borrow one. I am on my third IPad and have never had a issue with the charging port but plenty of issues with charging cables and plugs. I would certainly check these.

Just remember it is not in the businesses interest to tell you this.

suki1964 · 25/06/2025 20:10

The usual culprit is fluff in the hole where you charge

These are personal questions I know, but how old is your child and what do they need the iPad for?. If its not for banking and other stuff that needs updating every 5 minutes I MAY be able to help, Ive a couple of "bricks here " nowt wrong with them, as in they charge and are in good condition - just out of date and a load of apps will no longer work

So like eBay app won't work, but you can still go to eBay via a browser. Just no way are any banking apps going to work.

General browsing, using pages and numbers is fine

Jamiemark11 · 26/06/2025 11:05

@ToKittyornottoKitty thank you this is a great idea

Some older iPads don’t have wireless charging capabilities so make sure you have one that does before you spend money

BusWankers · 30/06/2025 20:22

It probably best your kid doesn't have an iPad anyways, no great loss.

They can read a book, colour in, play with toys, do puzzles, do word searches., go outside and play etc instead
