How much do you spend each week on your groceries? Specifically those as a family of four-six if possible please.

We have two adults, both working but take lunches out to work or eat at home beforehand. Also a 14-year-old boy, a 12-year-old and 7-year-old girl who take packed lunches to school.

Also two cats.

We are a family of 2 adults, 1 teen and 2 growing boys and we spend £100 a week. That has crept up from about £70 a year ago. The youngest two both have school lunches. We have a delivery from Tesco

CatsMagic · 01/06/2025 16:15

2 adults , 2 kids (15 & 12) approx 250 per week

(cat food is accounted for separately and this is £120 per month)

Seaside3 · 01/06/2025 19:42

4 adults, (17 and 18 year old). £90 a week roughly feom Tesco. We do eat out once a week as a couple, and the kids sometimes eat whilst out and about. But this includes all cleaning/toiletries etc, breakfast, lunch and dinner for all of those who want to eat.
We also buy nice bread from the bakery £5 a week, plus the odd corner shop if anyone fancies something extra.

Pineapplewaves · 01/06/2025 20:10

2 adults and 2 DC at primary school. Everyone has a packed lunch from home on weekdays. No pets. We rarely drink alcohol. We spend around £110.00 per week at Asda.

pinksquash13 · 01/06/2025 20:11

2 adults 2 kids (5 and 3). £110 sainsburys.

Overthebow · 01/06/2025 20:13

2 adults and two young DCs. We spend around £120-150 per week, we don’t budget. If we were being careful we could get it down lower.

tinfoilhats1 · 01/06/2025 20:15

2 adults, 3 boys (5/9/12) and a cat =£250-300pw My middle son is a machine and eats non-stop, could happily eat a whole roast chicken for breakfast

typicaltuesdaynight · 01/06/2025 20:27

£40-£50 a week for 3 adults (have a 18 ds) and 1 child (8) and 1 cat . I got to Lidl and make from scratch all meals apart from the pizza we have one teatime once a week. This includes packed lunches for us all, cleaning products and cat food

JellyAnd · 01/06/2025 20:31

2 adults, 2 kids (preschool and primary age who have lunch at school), 2 cats and I reckon we spend about £250 including the cat stuff, cleaning bits and a couple of bottles of wine.

How do you manage this what do you cook

BigRenoLittleBudget · 01/06/2025 20:35

We are a family of 5 but our 3 DC are fairly small only 6, 4 and 1 although the 6 year old has a big appetite. We all have lunchboxes or leftovers every weekday for lunch apart from 6yo. Our weekly shop includes household supplies like loo roll as well as nappies and wipes for the baby and general household toiletries like soap and shower gel. We spend around £100-130 a week at Sainsburys split across two deliveries, it varies depending on whether I need stuff like laundry detergent. Previously when I did a weekly shop I found I was spending over £100 and then still spending £40ish on a top up shop somewhere. So overall this strategy is definitely saving us money.

Tulipvase · 01/06/2025 20:40

Family of 5 but one away at uni. 2 adults and a 16 year old and 14 year old. 16 year old eats non stop but does buys some of his own as works part time.

I think we spend £200/230 a week ish. We do like wine. I do like to cook too.

HelpMebeok · 01/06/2025 20:43

3 adults and 3 children. Usually £100 a week but no alcohol. That does include nappies and wipes for 2 kids.

DemBonesDemBones · 01/06/2025 20:56

2 adults 4 kids we spend about £300 every fortnight and £60ish on top ups a week. We don’t drink alcohol.

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/06/2025 20:59

2 adults 2 preschool age kids. Around £800 a month including all tops ups, booze if we get it, etc. That includes all meals including lunchboxes.

Could you break this down for me so I can see where I'm going so badly wrong?!

Seaside3 · 01/06/2025 21:06

@typicaltuesdaynight that's super impressive. I cool from scratch bit still can't get it anywhere near that. What do you eat in a week?

Weepixie · 01/06/2025 21:15

You’re not going wrong. Even cooking from scratch the above amt minus the cleaning products and cat food isn’t going to provide a balance diet, or much to eat.

Minimalistmamaoftwo · 01/06/2025 21:17

I have no idea how people are doing it for less than £100, we are a family of four, two very small children and two adults and I spend £200 a week minimum. Those who are spending less than £100 are you not eating meat or fish?

ThatDenimExpert · 01/06/2025 21:18

Family of 3 - about £130

I often buy the £1.50 fruit/veg box at Lidl you get them in the morning in my local one . The veg ones are better as I make a lot of soups out of them or pasta sauces I’ll let you know what a typical week is
breakfast each day is either homemade waffles/ pancakes with fruit, cereal or toast I buy the large apple juice out off Lidl for the boys dh and I had a cup of tea
packed lunches for ds’s and dh - sandwiches with cheese or meat with salad. My youngest isn’t keen on sandwiches so will often take crackers . All
have yogurts , and a homemade cake of some sort . And fruit
tea - meatballs and pasta, chicken lasanga, sausages and mash, pasta with chicken, fish steamed with Mediterranean veg, homemade quiche and salad. One night frozen pizza and garlic bread
snacks- homemade pizza rollers( puff pastry spread with tomato purre and grated cheese) rolled and cut into slices. Sugar free jelly and custard, fruit, homemade smoothie ice lollies .
all evening meals usually served with frozen veg as a lot cheaper or beans. I also buy the chicken and fish frozen as works out cheaper . I work nightshift so I make a big pot of soup for when I’m not sleeping or to
take with me. I follow the batch lady and tend to cook and freeze my foods on a Sunday I make my waffles and pancakes and freeze the for week ahead . Smoothie ice lollies are from the not so great fruit in the Lidl’s £1.50 boxes . Kid love them. I watch a lot of frugal cooking on you tube . Julia patcheo is amazing . She American so I’ve had to goggle some ingredients as I had no idea of the American name .

Seaside3 · 01/06/2025 21:25

@Minimalistmamaoftwo we are under £100, just. Yes, eat meat. Not a fan of fish, but do sometimes buy frozen foe those who like it.
For meat I buy 1 large pack of chicken breasts, this week it was 1.6kg for £9.50 from tesco. This fed 7 of us last night (older family over), with 4 big chicken breasts left for another 2 meals. I also ordered a gammon, i think £4/5 for ham sandwiches. Usually I order either beef or pork mince too. We eat meat most days, but I add loads of veg and extra bits. For example, last night we had Asian style, so I made satay chicken, with noodles, boiled eggs, roasted broccoli, spring rolls, sesame seeds, dipping sauces, gyoza. The left overs made enough for tea for 4 tonight too.
On nights where we don't war meat I make something simple like roasted tomato pasta and feta, veg Risotto, baked potatoes, paneer curry.

typicaltuesdaynight · 01/06/2025 21:27

Forgot to add I have a raspberry bush in my garden and strawberries. We get loads of fruit of them
in summer. I had so much raspberries last year I made 6 bottles of raspberry wine!

Minimalistmamaoftwo · 01/06/2025 21:30

Thanks @Seaside3 your meals sound amazing! We do have allergies to work with which makes things difficult and my husband would have a full chicken breast with each meal/full piece of fish. We are also having all meals at home as he is remote so it’s a lot. Finally, which I know makes a difference we only buy organic/wild but I can’t believe it’s making a £100 difference, would you mind posting some other meals you make
