How much do you spend each week on your groceries? Specifically those as a family of four-six if possible please.

We have two adults, both working but take lunches out to work or eat at home beforehand. Also a 14-year-old boy, a 12-year-old and 7-year-old girl who take packed lunches to school.

Also two cats.

DDog is thriving on Royal Canin at less than €1 a day. His breeder advised never to change brand and to leave it available at all times. It may be boring but he eats only when he’s hungry.
He’s a mini Schnauzer and they have liver, pancreas and obesity problems.

These threads are always interesting - we're 3 adults at home, and I'd struggle to get it much under £60 per week total, but equally it's rarely over £80 ish. We don't really buy alcohol but don't otherwise scrimp. We eat reasonably healthy, meat and/or fish a few times a week (we don't really have roasts though as I don't actually enjoy them).

How can you feed that many people on £100 a week . Hats off to you if it’s good quality food and not just baked beans and sausage .

Actually, beans aren't the worst food. I'm not suggesting beans on toast every night, obviously.

Hattie and denim I’ve provided an example of what we have in a typical week , why would you say we eat dust? Pretty insulting to be honest? If you read the full thread you wouldn’t be saying that. Proper budgeting and meal planning means you don’t need to spend a fortune . I refuse to pay greedy supermarkets my very hard earned cash . When I shopped at Asda /morrisons and Sainsbury’s I was well over £100 per week , shopping at Lidl saves me so much more money . I find the meat a lot better quality as I’ve had rancid chicken and mince a few times from Sainsbury’s

I agree.

Totally agree with PP that meal planning and batch cooking is the way forward - and I do shop at lidl for 95% of stuff so minimal branded / processed items. I also bulk out dishes with pulses and veg - for example yesterday I used 500g pork mince at £2.49 to make a 4 portion lasagne (10" square Pyrex dish) and 4 portion chilli by adding red lentils to the tomato /onion/ garlic / mince base then splitting that into two pans, adding mixed taco beans and peppers into one and pesto and sundried tomatoes into the other. I can't afford to feed 2 teens without this kind of approach.

Washing powder is a huge swindle IMO, it can easily be a fiver a box. Not to mention dishwasher tabs…

I’ve recently switched to Nancy Birtwhistle’s DIY eco cleaning products:
washing liquid (soap slivers, washing soda and hot water, whisked up to a gloop with a hand blender),
vinegar/alcohol spray cleaner and
limescale remover (diluted citric acid)
which work better than commercial products, are multitasking and a quarter of the price.

I used to wash tiled floors with diluted ammonia but when DDog arrived that had to stop! Now I just use the washing liquid.

My dishwasher is an older smaller model built for powder not tabs. I buy own-brand powder and scrimp on the dosage but that’s getting harder to find.

Yes you are right. I stupidly didn't think about laundry liquid and dishwasher tabs becausewe have those on subscription. I make my own all-purpose spray too, so I only buy few bottles of bleach for loo and some washing up liquid from the shops (for stuff that can't go in the dishwasher)

I get smol tablets and they are I think, £5.80 every 6 weeks or so. Laundry liquid is a 5 liter ecover canister and it lasts almost year.

2 adults and 3 kids. We spend £70 at the supermarket. I purchased meat from the butchers and freeze but it works out at another £30 a week, so £100 all in. Ours are at primary school yet, though I expect it will be more ad they get older.
