Insane increase in bills - THAMES WATER !!!!!!!!!

YesTonightJosephine · 27/05/2025 12:07

Hello MNs,

I would love to know if any MNs will be challenging the "insane" increase with Thames Water!

Our Water Bill for this month has increased by £40.00 (UKP) !!!!

3 bed flat, 3 adults, no baths, only showers, washing machine, dishwasher is only on at the weekend.

We find our Water Bills way too high as it is!

I am about to call them and find out if we can split and/or pay in installments.

Wish me luck MN!

Why is there nothing be done about these shameful bonuses!

Onwards!

Is there anyway you can have a water meter fitted? I’m with Thames Water and my bill has gone down masses since I had mine.

YesTonightJosephine · 27/05/2025 12:16

We do have a Water Meter and our bills have been so much higher since it was fitted but this new increase is to pay for all these 'shameful' bonuses!

Small flat/apartment
3 adults
Washing Machine
Dishwasher
Showers - Daily
Bath - very rarely
All work from home so lots of bathroom and kitchen use in the day as well as evening

On average 20m/25m Water Usage per month, which I think is way too high but we are THREE adults all working from home too so that accounts for the high usage.

Our bill was approx £55.00 a month but as of this month for the same usage it is £95.00 !!!

Still waiting to speak to a human ...

Look Whos Talking Now Omg GIF

WHY and HOW have Thames Water been allowed to increase their charges by 40.7% and why are more customers just NOT ACCEPTING THIS!

THAMES WATER you are APPALLING, SHAMEFUL and a DISGRACE!

I have no words and I just do not understand why every single THAMES WATER Customer is not outraged by this!

Still not been able to speak to a human but I may be too angry to actually deal with a member of their Customer Care Team today and perhaps will wait until I am calmer ...

Onwards and please if you are with THAMES WATER please, please challenge this 40.7 % increase!

!!!!!!!

I Think you need to calm down…

YesTonightJosephine · 27/05/2025 14:10

Why!

THAMES WATER are shameful!

I can now see there are a few posts in CHAT too about how shocked and appalled Customers are!

OP posts:
nellly · 27/05/2025 14:12

Wait so if you’re on a meter and using lots of water surely it’s proportionate?
yep they shouldn’t get bonuses for crap performance but it seems a bit disingenuous to say it’s directly a 40% bonus only for shameful bonuses? Sounds like it’s also high usage, general inflation, cost to rotting sewer
system and yes… bonuses

ours has gone up a chunk too so you do have my sympathies but if you get ontl
customer services and rant about bonuses I doubt they’ll offer support I’m afraid.

there are support fund for vulnerable
households but 3 full time wages coming in I doubt you’ll be eligible Sad

I Think you need to calm down…

Why is it wrong to get angry at a regional monopoly private business that provides you with an absolute basic essential - so you cannot possibly do without it and you cannot buy it from another supplier - when they hike prices so extortionately following years of gross incompetence and snouts in the trough?

Why can we only buy our water from one supplier in the first place? Gas and electricity comes through the same pipes, but at least we have a choice of whom we pay for it.

Water should only be allowed to be a monopoly in each region if it is state controlled.

THAMES WATER need to be challenged on this by every single Customer!

SoloSofa24 · 27/05/2025 14:26

That's a big increase, but it does sound like you could definitely cut down your water usage - 20-25m2 a month is huge for three people!

I only use about 2m2 a month, and due to a mix up from the water company, I am also getting my neighbours' bills and water meter readings at the moment (trying to sort it out...) but I can see that the family of five, including teens, and two parents who work from home a lot of the time, only use 10m2 a month on average. How long are your showers? And do you use eco-settings on the washing machine and dishwasher?

Sandy792 · 27/05/2025 14:40

It's not just Thames water hiking up the prices but hte whole privatisation has been a joke. Thames borrowed huge amounts of money while it was owned by the Australian investment banking company Macquarie, tripling their debt whilst paying themselves huge dividends. Macquarie are now 'helping' the current owners with their debt. And we're all paying for this nonsense. Water needs renationalising more than rail IMO.

YesTonightJosephine · 27/05/2025 14:40

Just to confirm that yes we have written to our MP.

We have always had issues with the Water Usage here and we have been challenging this for some time now ...

The bills have increased since we had a Meter installed ...

Onwards!

Edited

If your bills increase you have I think 2 years to decided to go back to unmetered - but you might want to look at how much unmetered water has been hiked up too.

YesTonightJosephine · 27/05/2025 14:44

Just to say THANK YOU for everyone responding, very much appreciated ... the good and the bad!

We all need to be challenging all these mad increases by all the companies.

We just cannot continue to accept this!

Complain to them .

Buxusmortus · 27/05/2025 14:54

Your usage is absolutely huge though.
My usage was 18 cubic metres for the last 6 months ie 3 per month. I live on my own, 4 bed house, have a dishwasher, washing machine and shower every day but only wash my car every couple of months. I do use water butts for the garden unless it's been very dry like recently when they ran out. So I'd think 3 people would use about 9 or 10 m³ a month, not 20 or 25.

Meadowfinch · 27/05/2025 15:03

OP, your usage is huge, so your bills will be huge too. We are a two-adult household and only use 11% of that.

I agree that a 40% raise is unfair, and that the ownership have pillaged the company for their own profit, but hopefully they will go bankrupt soon and come into public ownership.

Until then, if this keeps them solvent and our rivers cleaner, I'll go with it because what is the choice?

CaramelGhost · 27/05/2025 15:10

2 adults working from home and 2 kids here and we use about half what you're using OP. Can you investigate a leak??That's an awful lot to be using

AnnaBalfour · 27/05/2025 15:12

YANBU that’s an insane increase

Mine also increased a lot so I’m considering a water meter.

Reetpetitenot · 27/05/2025 15:15

Would it halp to reframe it that you're getting a lot of fresh, clean water direct from taps in your house, and having all the waste water/sewage dealt with for £3 per day? That actually seems like a bit of a bargain tbh.

Your household do seem to be heavy users though.

YesTonightJosephine · 27/05/2025 15:15

Well, managed to get through to a lovely human via CHAT in the end.

Plumber/Engineer coming tomorrow to double check for leaks via landlord insurance as we have had non stop leaks so there is a bigger problem somewhere.

And YES I have been constantly saying to my flat mates and landlord that our usage is way, way, way too high!

Our daily usage has gone up from 0.22 to 0.65 but we have not changed anything at al ... usual showers, washing up, washing machine, loo etc ... same usage.

Well, our bill is on pause until the issue is sorted out!

Again, THANK YOU for responding MNs!
