Extra income

I have just qualified as a GP but there are no jobs as a GP anywhere, I have been looking for a while and people are using their regular locums instead of newer qualified GPs.

I am looking for some extra income, I do sell on vinted but looking for some other ways to make some money as husband just about covers mortgage and bills so we do need some cash coming in somehow.

Any suggestions please? I have already sold unwanted clothes etc on vinted but of course it isn't enough.
What kind of things would people buy on etsy for example as I'm thinking of a business there?

Many thanks,

Have you looked into provided GP services for these online GP companies? With the difficulty in getting a GP appointment, I can only assume this is a growing market.

I'd stick to something medical! Even if you just joined a bank and did shifts when you wanted, you'd at least be contributing to your pension:

-phlebotomist
-care work/HCA
-teach CPR courses

xmasdealhunter · 22/05/2025 15:10

Could you do something like care work?

Defiantly41 · 22/05/2025 16:29

Also, look at the world of insurance - handling or advising on claims for private medical insurance, travel insurance, motor or liability insurance (bodily injury claims make up the vast majority of claims costs for the last 3).

or the world of Health & Safety, training maybe?

or medical beauty treatments, my salon owner is thinking of qualifying as a paramedic because she needs the medical qualifications to administer some treatments (laser/injectables/peels etc)

Online tutoring in sciences or for med students?

Londonmummy66 · 22/05/2025 17:07

A friend of mine is a retired GP and does some shifts in a local pharmacy. I'd also second the advice to look at tutoring - maths & Science GCSE and A level and maybe the UCAT

Benefits assessor? Remote working.

Also 111 nhs health adviser.

What a shame your GP qualification is not being put to use. I hope you get a good position soon.

Tenducks · 25/05/2025 17:02

Unbelievable that there are no jobs after all you have done to qualify! I am shocked. Sorry I have no advice except to say surely there must be a way you can use all those years of education. You’re a Doctor!

GildedRage · 25/05/2025 17:06

Move to Canada please.

YinYangalang · 26/05/2025 06:26

PIP assessor.

SapporoBaby · 26/05/2025 06:30

Would you be willing to move? I can see GP positions advertised in Wales

SapporoBaby · 26/05/2025 06:32

Actually I can see hundreds of GP positions on the NHS site… are you only looking in a very limited area?

BunnyRuddington · 26/05/2025 06:33

I suppose it will be harder as you’ll probably only be looking at a certain area if you are married and your DH has a job?

Have you set up an email alert with BMJ careers?

And could you do shifts at the local out of hours GP service?

Article in Irish Times today about the upward trend in U.K. GPs relocating to
Ireland to locum. Reciprocal medical training recognition.

Poonu · 26/05/2025 06:59

I'm assuming this is a joke. You're a qualified GP and you're selling on a vinted to make an income. There are many many jobs for qualified doctors. Psychological services, pharmaceuticals, civil service, banking.

Peonymummy · 12/06/2025 17:19

@BunnyRuddingtonWe have 2 under 2s so I can't work awkward hours and need a local salaried/locum position. I will set up the email alert with BMJ thank you!

This changes things from "I'm desperate and can't get a job" to "I can't find the exact job and hours I want".

Being fussy is a luxury.
