Energy bills - how much do you pay?

So electricity and gas.
We pay £245 for a 2 bed house for two people and a 2 year old. Seems a bit too much hence asking. Done a bit of insulation in the house but not a new built.

Was £250. Now £150 and that seems to cover me for 3bed house. Heating on when I want and on a lot during cold/winter months

plus spa electricity for 4mths ish in warm months

so £1800 a year

TheBucketFamily · 02/04/2025 16:20

I've just increased our monthly direct debit to £150, as for the first time in about ten years our energy account went into the red last month. Previously we'd always had a credit balance throughout the year.

There are two of us, both retired, in a drafty 110-year-old detached house with gas central heating and a woodburner. We're with Octopus, on a one-year fixed tariff that ends in June.

champagneplanet · 03/04/2025 11:42

Ours has just gone up to £179 for gas & elec to cover the deficit from the winter months, its was £136. Three bed semi, use the tumble dryer more or less daily and no shy with the central heating. 2 adults, 2 kids. We're with EDF, no smart meter.

We do have solar panels but don't 'make' money from them, we just use the excess the rest goes to the solar panel people/national grid. We dont get much benefit from them through the winter as we're not there during the day when the sun is shining.

Paulrn · 03/04/2025 11:47

£80 per month for both gas and electric 4 bed house 2 adults and a Labrador. We do have solar panels with battery storage so from march to October / November we are self sufficient foe electricity and from April till October what we sell covers our gas bill and all standing charges as well.

DressingGemma · 03/04/2025 11:53

£200 a month. 4 bed detached. 4 adults 1 teenager. 2 eldest adult DC are gamers and don’t know how to turn things off when at work 🤣

CosyNavyLeader · 03/04/2025 11:57

Family of four. 3 bedroom detached.

£110 a month all year round.

We don't have the heating on full blast in the winter. We wrap up and put it on low for a few hours after school.

We all shower/bath once or twice a day.

Washing machine once or twice a day.

Tumble dryer in winter.

Dishwasher.

I think the fact we dont use the heating much in the winter is what keeps it down. It can be miserable though at times.

It can't possibly cost the same amount each month, do you mean that your DD is set at that amount?

Doggymummar · 03/04/2025 12:12

£350 a month gas and electric 2 people in the house

Yes.

Passthecake30 · 05/04/2025 10:20

£175 a month, semi detached, 2 adults, 2 teens. I wfh but in the kitchen that gets the sun and also has underfloor heating that retains the heat so I seal myself up in there. Heating goes off April to as long as I can manage, target to Nov. I try to use the oven sensibly, use the air fryer if it’s just a single item.

KateArnott · 05/04/2025 16:17

We spent £62.52 on gas and £81.82 on electric last month. We are both at home during the day and DP works from home. DP has claimed the tax relief due to working from home too.

GOODCAT · 05/04/2025 16:21

£116 a month for 3 bed detached 1910s house. Husband retired. Me out at work most of the time. In south of England so warmer than many areas of the UK.

abracadabra1980 · 05/04/2025 19:41

£158.00 pcm 4 bed old and draughty. Got to say since I bought an electric throw, I have been able to used my CH a lot less/on a lower temperature. I have thyroid issues and am always cold so need heating on around 20 degrees.

HelenWheels · 13/04/2025 07:03

£116
3 adults, 3 bed

SaraSosej · 13/04/2025 07:31

I’m with Octopus and pay £150 a month for a family of 4 in a 4 bed Victorian house. I’m already £300 in credit. When the heating is on it’s set to 18degrees as we dont like it any hotter.

Dogaredabomb · 13/04/2025 11:02

I find octopus agile so excellent, I've reduced our bill by an awful lot by being scrupulous on timings of usage.

FlowerFairy12 · 14/04/2025 08:22

We paid £90 for electricity last month with Octopus (no gas here) However, we’ve got 14 solar panels and an EV which skews the figures a bit.

sansou · 14/04/2025 14:00

Approx usage last year. E=5000 kWh G=20000kWh
4 adults in large 5 bed detached. Changed over to Octopus Fixed last autumn and £270 pm DD. Just installed solar panels + batteries and electricity bill has gone down to approx 50p per day (mostly the standing charge from £3 - £4 daily). We should also start being paid for our daily excess being exported back into the National Grid so anticipate offsetting the winter bills to come. Now on Octopus Flux tariff for electricity.

CherryBlossomPie · 14/04/2025 23:40

2 bed new build with 1 occupant. Electric 65 pm. Heating 18pm. So 83pm. No gas.

The hot water heats for 1 hour a day on a timer. I rarely put the heating on (maybe 2 hours a day in cold winter). Mostly I use an infrared heater aimed at me when WFH if I'm chilly.

ObstreperousCushion · 14/04/2025 23:53

OP Have you put your usage into the money saving expert calculator? It might be that you can get a better deal.

I spend £190 a month (3 bed terrace, heating at 20 before and after school plus heater in the room where I wfh, oven used quite a bit, tumble dryer used in winter). I’ve just reduced this by £30 a month by swopping providers and tariffs.

Negroany · 14/04/2025 23:58

3 bed terrace, one person, gas and electric set DD at £126 pm. I am currently £46 in credit so think the DD is set right, I've never gone into debit.

Currently using about £15pw, combined, but the heating hasn't been on much the last two weeks.

Pinepeak2434 · 15/04/2025 00:20

Eon next want nearly £400 from me a month even though I hardly have the heating on however, what they want and what they get are two different things

savuni27 · 15/04/2025 00:25

£175 for both monthly, 3 bed semi, 1 adult WFH, 3 kids (tech heavy household) however only 50% of the time as co parenting.
I do use the tumble dryer a lot and all the kids like fans on overnight. We use a lot of electric.

WhenICalledYouLastNightFromTesco · 19/04/2025 16:46

2 adults in a 2 bed semi. We are fixed with Octopus and pay for what we use each month. I've just looked back on the last 12 months statements. The highest we paid was £197 this January and the lowest was £62 last August.

The monthly average is £129.

We aren't wasteful with gas and electric, but we also won't sit in a cold house. The heating is probably set to 20 degrees for a couple of hours in the morning and probably 5 hours on an evening in Winter. Generally at this time of year we just manually put it on when needed for a couple of hours - usually evening.

Average 5 washes a week and probably use the dryer 2 to 3 times a week. Funnily enough I probably use the dryer more in Spring when it is usually wet outside but too warm for the heating to be on 🤣.

Tv left on for dog when we are out.

Myengagementring · 19/04/2025 16:49

We are with Octopus and pay £122 per month for gas and electricity, we are in credit so could probably reduce it. We live in a 4 bed detached, no EV
