Clothes have really gone up in price!

Sorted out kids spring/summer clothes and nothing from last year fits ds16 or dd14. They’ve picked some bits and I’ve started ordering and already I’m up to just over £1K with a few things still to order plus both dc need new trainers and crocs as feet have also grown. Dreading going through my own clothes as haven’t replaced summer things in several years and I know a few pairs of my linen trousers are threadbare. DH can sort and order his own!
Do you set a budget per dc and say for example you’ve got £400 this season send me some links? Or do you just suck up the cost? I think this has been the most expensive year to date but both kids have grown a lot in the last 12 months.

We buy a lot on vinted, and my dc also like to use depop. You can filter by 'new with tags' and get unworn stuff, but it saves a small fortune, and if you try the clothes and don't like them you can just resell them. You can get some brand new crocs on there for much less than the asking price.

I have never bought my children seasonal wardrobes like you are suggesting. Their clothes are generally second hand.

FannyBawz · 25/03/2025 14:55

Surely a £100 in H&M gets you quite far…. Where are you shopping?!?

Sprogonthetyne · 25/03/2025 16:53

What are you buying them? My kids 'summer wardrobe' would be 2-3 pares of shorts and some saddles. They still were the same t-shirts as in winter, just without a jumper over the top (or might were a jumper with a coat in winter or insteadof a coat in summer).

I agree with the suggestion of vinted for more expensive bits, also maybe limit to a few bits of branded/fashon bits but bulk out with generic plain t-shirts or joggers.

minnienono · 25/03/2025 17:01

Never bought so much, what brands are you buying??

mine got £100 twice a year for clothes at those ages, say £150 to allow for inflation. Most clothes are suitable for year round in the uk, I’ve never replaced even 1/4 at any given time

UpUpUpU · 25/03/2025 17:04

Where on earth are you shopping?!

I spent £150 at the weekend getting my son some new summer clothes, sandals and me some underwear and a bikini. A grand is ridiculous.

Lovelysummerdays · 25/03/2025 17:06

Vinted for lots of stuff apart from undies and shoes

Stressfordays · 25/03/2025 17:06

I buy all year round to spread the cost. Use vinted and cheap sites for branded gear. I don't limit clothes to seasons. You can just add a hoodie and a coat to make most outfits autumn/winter suitable. I use Primark and shein a lot too for basics.

bloodredfeaturewall · 25/03/2025 17:07

with 3 teens I feel your pain. especially regarding shoes...

we also don't buy seasonal as such. they usually get a new pair of shorts a year and wear tshirts and jeans all year round.

Lookingforpetitedress · 25/03/2025 17:09

What are you buying for £1k? If you’re buying expensive brands then wait for sales or buy different brands.

Meadowfinch · 25/03/2025 17:09

My main challenge is not price. I have a 6' ds with a 26" waist and 32" inside leg. Shops don't seem to make clothes for skinny teens anymore.

Finding anything that fits is nightmarish. Price is a secondary concern. 🙁

LollyLand · 25/03/2025 17:10

I only have one and have already spent £500 in last 8 days refreshing her wardrobe for summer. It’s just a price I suck up but we’ve barely made a dent and she will still need a lot more.

I always hit lucky with Crocs and get mine and my teens in the sale direct from their website.

Boys 14+ is very generous.

It's always a race to the bottom on Mumsnet. I went to Westfield with DD a few weeks ago and a jumper, pyjamas and a couple of tops from Hollister was £300.

That's what being a slave to a brand costs.

Jinglejanglenamechanged25 · 25/03/2025 17:27

Why is shopping at a reasonable priced shop a race to the bottom 😂😂😂 what a strange outlook on life.

anniegun · 25/03/2025 17:32

Until recently clothing was relatively immune to inflation as manufacturing just moved on to cheaper countries. It has still not risen as much as many other categories of goods even if there has been some recent inflation Clothing annual CPI trends 2008-2023 | Statista One factor is that succesful brands tend to raise prices so if you are sticking with one it may be pushing up prices, although you could trade down

Yes I think clothes are expensive. Even with sales, some secondhand, it will cost me a fair amount this year for Ds. He’s 5. He’s outgrown anything summery. And will no doubt outgrow all this winters clothes before next winter. A recent shop of just new underwear and pjs wasnt that cheap

All his shoes need replacing soon, and some shoes and clothing he needs double of for leaving at nursery. Ie 2 pairs slippers, wellingtons and rain gear.

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 25/03/2025 17:36

JD sports ds is 16 and in men’s clothes one Nike hoodie is about £80, he will be starting college in September so yes he needs more than 3 T-shirts.

Dd is 14 and her school will no longer have uniforms after Easter so again needs more than 3 sets of clothes. She also likes brands, Nike Pro etc all their friends where and I am keen for her not to be bullied.

£1000 doesn’t go far at all these days, they both need new underwear, socks and dd needed bigger bras also.

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 25/03/2025 17:37

Pyjamas for dd were £18 a pair from M&S so even high street brands have increased.
