What happens if I don’t pay gas and electric for a few weeks

British Gas want me to pay by the 13th of Jan for electricity used throughout December. I can’t pay until the end of January. Will I be ok? I don’t need a payment plan

Why do they need a lump sum, are you in arrears? Can you set up a direct debit for pay day? I doubt anything will happen if your not inarears

Littletreefrog · 11/01/2025 22:16

When is the due date of the bill? If you are only going to be a a few weeks late more than likely nothing will happen other than a few reminders. But will you be able to pay January's usage on time? If not best to call and set up a payment plan otherwise you will constantly be chasing your tail.

Some people pay their usage on receipt of bill monthly so always a lump sum payment rather than a averaged DD.

You should phone them to explain.
I'm pretty sure they'll make a note of it so you don't get a reminder.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 11/01/2025 22:22

I think it will be fine.

Having worked in gas and electric customer services I'm pretty sure they won't do this. It is helpful to let them know any issues you have with paying though and they can see what other ways of paying etc they can offer. Reminders are automatically generated and won't be stopped if no alternative is arranged.

AlbertAvocado · 11/01/2025 22:24

Just let them know. They could also change your billing date and might be able to offer support if you need it going forward.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 12/01/2025 08:49

Always best to contact them and let them know.

Do you budget for a monthly amount to pay? If so then pay what you can and catch up the rest at the end of the month. What you don't want to do is get into a situation where you couldn't pay Dec in Jan, so you delayed until end of Jan, and then in Feb you can't pay for Jan because you've only just paid for Dec etc.

You will still get reminders and will probably be put into their debt pathway once it's 14 days overdue.

Yes I do that myself, read the meter on the last day of the month send the reading then pay the bill by DD when generated. It sounds like something must have changed for the poster this month that paying tomorrow isn't convenient. I was wondering if there has been something happening along the way that has made them demand it is paid is all. if it's a case of being short because of Christmas and needing to stall then cancel the DD and make a different arrangement, but the January bill
will soon be due as well.

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 12/01/2025 12:25

I can pay both when I get paid at the end of the month but I couldn’t pay for December because of Christmas

You might be better setting up a monthly DD. Unfortunately you can't not pay every December because of Christmas, well you can but t's not a great idea and you end up chasing your tail. Will you be able to pay January if you pay December out of Januarys pay?

NotGottaClue · 12/01/2025 20:41

Phone them they'll change payment date

reichs79 · 12/01/2025 21:16

Will you be in a position to pay two bills out of the same pay period?

40weeksmummy · 15/01/2025 22:15

Was in the same situation with BG.
Call them. They can't postpone your bill but they can issue you "revised bill" - amount of last bill+usage for up to date.

GreenLeaf25 · 15/01/2025 23:04

Honestly OP. Nothing will happen at all. If you can make it up and be right as rain for Feb they won't care and it won't affect credit score etc
