Dark Chocolate - Price Increases

Chocolate is up in price again.
My barometer for chocolate prices is Sainsbury's own brand value Dark Chocolate 100g bar.
It was 30p a while back (early 2023?)
December 2023, 45p increase of 50%
June 2024, 60p increase of 33.33%
Aug 2024, 70p increase of 16.66%
5th Dec 2024 70p
7th Dec 2024, £1 increase of 42.85%

This will probably be seen with other brands, larger bars, but may not be as high a percentage increase. Have you see price changes in the larger bars yet?
Is it just dark chocolate, or are milk chocolate prices also changing?

Don't know what going on on this thread. Yes the price of it has been creeping up like everything else.

nannynick · 08/12/2024 20:01

Someone seems to think salad is a replacement for chocolate!

My barometer is Lidl and it's gone up at least a third since April.

kitchenhelprequired · 08/12/2024 20:11

That's both dark and milk

Mymblesdaughter · 08/12/2024 20:21

I work in shop that sells organic chocolate and the prices have increased massively in the last few months. It was the same with olive oil last year.

CeeJay81 · 08/12/2024 21:04

It's cause of the weather in West Africa. Cocoa mostly comes from Ivory Coast & Ghana. So as frustrating as it is for us chocoholics, we just have to put up with it.

BigBoysDontCry · 08/12/2024 21:15

I've noticed it too. I only buy 90%, 85% at a push. It used to be about £1.40 for a bar of sainsburys own and nearer a pound on a deal, now it's £2.25.

EveryoneKnowsJuanita · 08/12/2024 21:27

Cocoa harvests have been very bad for the last couple of years, so producers are using up their stocks. I suppose those with a higher cacao % will probably be hit worse - but maybe other ingredients have also gone up

BangingOn · 08/12/2024 21:32

Cocoa prices are through the roof. The higher the cocoa content, the bigger the impact on cost of goods.

Bucket07 · 08/12/2024 21:40

Yes! The Asda milk choc and nut bar used to be £1- I saw yesterday it had gone up to £2.40! Couldn't believe it and thought it had been mislabeled but no, that's just the new price 😬

Pretty sure this is the person who has a thread going about her being 38 weeks pregnant and just found out her husband has been having an affair.

MissVeronicaSpeedwell · 08/12/2024 23:49

I was very sad to see that my Aldi 70% dark chocolate is now up to £1.95 - it was £1.75 for ages (up from about £1.40, I think) and I thought even that was steep Shock

onwardsup4 · 09/12/2024 06:42

heartbroken22 · 09/12/2024 13:21

Sadly a lot of prices still going up. Not sure what they're trying to do.
