imnotsickbutimnotwell · 18/09/2024 13:16

Octopus is my energy supplier for Gas & Electric and they have been fantastic.

I have a referral code where anyone who joins we share £100 - so you save £50 off your first bill.

It anyone would like to take advantage of this then here's the link especially with the price cap changing in October!

I'm with them too so can't use your code, but just wanted to say I wholeheartedly agree. Love them.

Also I make use of their free energy slots all the time!

Soitis83 · 18/09/2024 13:31

They're amazing. They realised we were paying too much so moved our bill from 140pm to 50pm!!

Teachymummy · 18/09/2024 13:33

We've recently joined them and very happy so far. @GlobalCitz do you know how long it takes to find out if you earnt any free electric? We took part in the one on Saturday but haven't heard if we will get it free yet?

Pearl97 · 18/09/2024 13:34

You get a message about the free electricity and then it gets refunded to your account.
Remember to use your weekly free coffee!

They send us a notification about it, we opt in on the app and that's it.

Happens a lot at the moment too, I think they may have excess wind power and try to balance the grid.

Witchbitch20 · 18/09/2024 13:36

@Pearl97 free weekly coffee?

Pearl97 · 18/09/2024 13:39

Yup @Witchbitch20 if you go into octopus in the app you can get a free coffee from Greggs or any drink from cafe Nero each week. My average drink at cafe Nero costs at least £4.50!

Witchbitch20 · 18/09/2024 13:41

Waw! Thank you so much @Pearl97
I didn’t know about this, and regularly go for coffee at Nero’s so this is good to know.

Teachymummy · 18/09/2024 13:42

Yes @GlobalCitz @Pearl97 we had an email notification, signed up on the app. Put the tumble dryer on, had a shower, charged all devices etc but when I go on octoplus section it just says no free credit to show.

Pearl97 · 18/09/2024 13:43

@GlobalCitz It takes a while, you will get credit added to your account for the extra you used. Don't gte too excited though it iwill be about £1.00 We sat in the dark many times during the don't use electrciity and often got 40p!!! xx

BlackShuck3 · 18/09/2024 13:49

Thanks for the heads up, I need to look into this!

OhNotAgainTimothy · 18/09/2024 15:41

@Witchbitch20 you need to be an octoplus member for the free drinks, etc. Think you might need a smart meter to join Octoplus.

How did you get this? I got moved automatically from Shell to Octopus. Somehow my bills have gone up loads. I was actually expecting this to be a thread about how bad they are cost wise.

Is your bill reasonable based on actual usage? Both in terms of being based on regular readings and in terms of sensible payment? Is their estimated annual usage divided by 12 close to what they want for your DD?

I pay variable DD. However, I recently went on the fixed rate because it was a bit below the announced October cap, so seemed a reasonable choice. Bit higher than variable September prices, but should be a bit better for the coming months. As the tariff change wasn't clear, I emailed to ask whether it was possible to fix the rate and keep variable DD, they okayed it... and yet changed me to a fixed DD. Annoyed, I got it changed back within the next day, but the monthly DD they wanted to charge me came up a lot higher than the annual estimate/12. The estimate (and the Martin Lewis 'is your DD reasonable' calculator), though at current and not approaching prices, brings me to about 115/month, while their desired DD was 155/month.

I find it hard to find all the information I need on their app- maybe they send you more once you have been there a whole year with them- they switched me earlier this year

I just know I was paying £112 DD with Shell a month and now Octopus thinks I need to be on £135 a month DD- it seems a lot- but not been through a winter yet with them to know.

I don't use the app, only the website, but the estimated annual use is on the right hand side on the actual bills. These get emailed to me, but on the website are also findable under Payments-> Recent bills, so I would presume a similar path must exist on the app? The estimated annual cost (with current prices) should be right at the top on the right, while the estimated annual use in kWh should be on the right in each section (to the side of your bill calculations for gas/electricity).

Only if you want the free coffee, or to go on one of their special tariffs (for EV drivers or solar/battery owners for example) or tracker tariffs.

If anybody wants a code give me a nudge.

Bjorkdidit · 18/09/2024 19:07

We moved away from Octopus when they became uncompetitive.

We're now on the Eon Next Pledge tariff which is guaranteed to be 3% below the price cap tariff which means, for many people that it's comparable to the current fixes, which are more expensive than the current price cap.

Eon Next are also doing a similar referral deal that pays £50 to the referrer and referee, here's my code:

https://share.eonnext.com/ice-quail-3460

But for everyone, first make sure you do a price comparison for your circumstances

E.ON Next

Sharing energy is rewarding.

Use my referral link to switch to E.ON Next and we'll both save £50 off our energy bills!

Just checked with DH

He said it takes two weeks. You get charged normally for the electricity you use in that hour and then refunded.

We use EVERYTHING during that hour

Pearl97 · 18/09/2024 13:43

Hi, I don't think that was for me, but we were talking about the opposite situation - when you get to use all the electricity you want for one hour.

Pearl97 · 18/09/2024 21:00

@GlobalCitz sorry it was for you I wasnt very clear. Yes I know what you mean using the extra. You will get it credited to your account. It basically comes on your bill and then you are credited with the extra. So I’m not in credit for the extra we used.
look out for the saving sessions in the winter.
