No hot water

So I went 2 months without hot water or heating around March-May. I live in a council property and I had someone come out to look at my meter when I first lost the hot water etc. They said my meter has a cap on it and I won’t have any hot water till I’ve made payments (in debt), so I assumed I’d have to suffer without hot water till I’d paid it off and I have mental health issues so I’m not the smartest when it comes to things like this. After going a whole 2 months with no hot water I contacted my landlord again and they sent another person to look at my meter…he was shocked and disgusted that I’d gone 2 months with no hot water nd said they can’t just cap my water even if I’m in debt…he updated my meter and it turns out the readings weren’t accurate and I’m not actually in debt for my gas and electric so he has no idea why I was told it can’t be uncapped till I’ve paid and why they stopped me getting hot water. I now believe I could get some sort of compensation for this as the way they treated me was disgusting especially knowing I have mental health. How do I go about claiming compensation I have no idea how to do it or how it would work…also would it be worth it?

So you know have hot water since May? What was the problem.
Do you have any proof on what the first engineer told you?

MeganBoo · 12/09/2024 16:38

@FunLurker
problem is they made me go 2 months with no hot water and I have severe mental health they claimed it was due to me being in debt which was false. The second engineer who came and put my hot water back on said he was disgusted that they let me go so long without and that I should make a claim.

Totally agree but you need proof as otherwise they can just deny saying it.

Council workmen don’t usually get involved with fuel/water bills. That’s between you and those companies.

If your hot water/heating wasn’t working, because of the boiler etc. the council workmen should have fixed it.

If you’re in debt to the gas/electricity companies, you need to contact them to sort out a payment plan.

You wont get compensation, I wouldn’t think.

I'm not sure how the council (your land lord) is involved in your gas/electricity supply/bill

ThreeFeetTall · 12/09/2024 18:58

Did the council cap your gas because they came to do their annual gas safety check and you didn't have any gas to run the test? I've heard of that happening before.

Do you have any support? Either a support worker or friends/family?

MichaelandKirk · 12/09/2024 18:58

So you haven’t paid your electric bills and you are wondering if you can sue someone?

spottedinthewilds · 12/09/2024 19:00

I take it your gas was capped due to non payment?

They don't 'Cap' water.

spottedinthewilds · 12/09/2024 19:01

Ah yes good point! I suspect it was capped due to not being able to carry out your gas safety inspection.

Did you not allow access?

FirstTimeHomeowner · 12/09/2024 19:07

No. I feel like you should have chased it up yourself if you felt it was inaccurate. There is a wealth of support you can get managing your relationships with gas/elc companies if you struggle with life admin, I'd start with a visit to CAB in future if you are unable to manage your budget/bills.
