I got caught shoplifting

1000 replies

RoseBiscuitll · 09/09/2024 15:02

I really didn't know what topic to choose for this

I'm mortified, I got caught shoplifting in boots today, I was stealing baby milk and a facial moisturiser. I'm so ashamed of myself. It was in the city center aswell. They didn't call police but they took my details, took a picture and told me I can't return to the store again

Will this picture and my details go around to the other shops near by or will it just go to the other boots shops.

I can't believe I was stupid enough to do this! I'm so embarrassed and also feel really guiltily!

I don't think it's ok to be horrible to people in poor circumstances. So you're not really all that much of a moral paragon, are you?

Also, I seriously doubt that you wouldn't if things got hard enough. You've just never been desperate enough. That's the difference. And you have such a poor imagination that you can't appreciate that.

It's a shame to have to read your posts. I actually feel more sorry for you than the OP. At least she has the opportunity to get out of financial difficulty in the future. You'll always have this judgemental and spiteful character.

Well thank you for your sympathy for poor me being lumbered with my character. I appreciate it.

Plenty of people struggle financially but funnily enough they don’t lower themselves that much to become thieves.

OP has hopefully had a shock and won’t do it again unlike Abby212 who seems to have made a career out of it.

Plenty of people have read this thread but they haven't all lowered themselves to sticking the boot in.

PaillettenBedeckt · 10/09/2024 00:03

NeedaBreakSoon · 10/09/2024 00:02

This is nonsense
@murasaki hasn’t said anything judgemental or spiteful.

It takes one to know one, I see.

Livelovebehappy · 10/09/2024 00:04

I hope the people on here don’t represent the majority of people in the real world, or we’ve got a lot of people out there with a zero moral compass. And then we’ve had threads on here recently about why the young kids coming through today are badly behaved. Doesn’t take a genius to work that one out if people actually condone theft. Nothing in the OPs earlier posts indicate she is struggling to buy milk. But others are constructing a narrative (excuse) for her, and she’s now running with it.

RoyallyEFFEDOFF · 10/09/2024 00:08

Moral compass is low currently I agree
I think the state of the economy is responsible for a lot of people doing things they never thought they would
Hopefully brighter days are ahead for everyone

I never mentioned my financial situation in the first post as I didn't think it was relevant.

People started to ask me more as the thread went on. And I opened up to them

Just read this whole thing. @RoseBiscuitll i hope you’re okay. It’s an awfully desperate situation to be in. As much as you shouldn’t steal I get why you did it, your baby needs feeding and we live in a fucked up system. I hope you get the help you need.

@murasaki you are honestly vile. Those comments about contraception are worse than stealing milk for your baby and a six quid bottle of moisturiser. I’m sure you are much closer to being homeless than being a millionaire. I hope you learn to show some compassion and empathy for your fellow human.

Halloumiheaven · 10/09/2024 00:14

PaillettenBedeckt · 10/09/2024 00:01

Oh yes, of course. Much better a hungry baby, right?

Pat yourself on the back for that 🙄

You're catastrophising and being emotive.

There was no "hungry baby".In 2024, whether you choose to believe it or not, there literally is NO reason for a baby not to be provided with milk. There's government provisions to see to that.

The op never once said she was in so much dire straits that she had to resort to stealing milk because her baby was "starving".

Her OP was concerned with CCTV and consequences of her actions. They're very first world problems for a mother in the UK with a "starving baby"..?

There's lack of thought depth on this thread. It just seems like some people are loving painting the perfect victim and swooping in to be the saviour of said victim. All this "starving baby" , "cold and hungry" talk.

I actually feel quite sorry for the OP, she genuinely seemed to admit she'd made a bit of a cock up and was worried about the come back. She probably feels pressured into getting into this victim role now it's caused such a furore!!

simplythezest · 10/09/2024 00:15

I haven't read the full thread so apologies if I've missed anything.

I was caught shoplifting one item in boots when I was younger, many years ago. I was probably about 14. I was a silly teenager, absolutely learned my lesson and never repeated it- but I just wanted to offer my support OP.

I was taken into a room, and just as you mentioned had my picture taken and told not to return to the store.

My picture or any details were not shared with any other store in the city centre, and I have returned to the same store since- as an adult, with no issues.

We can only learn from our mistakes

ncforcatquestion · 10/09/2024 00:15

I'm sorry you're facing these circumstances

Don't worry. Some people have nothing better to do than pick on other people. The good and kind people understand. There will always be bullies and bad people, but you've got lots of us on your side and that's what matters in life.

I get it. I would have stolen the milk too. And the moisturiser. I'm sure a huge business like Boots can cope with losing a few quid. You needed it a lot more than they did.

I'm only sorry you got caught.

murasaki · 10/09/2024 00:17

One could potentially argue that I'm being bullied.

Spot on.

It's not actually the OP relinquishing herself of responsibility, I think she was owning it in her first OP- it's everyone else relinquishing it on her behalf !!

Government provisions, my arse. You live in a fairy story from the sound of it.

Yes, I get emotional and I care about other people. You should try it sometime.

HollyKnight · 10/09/2024 00:19

Right, so you needed a cot. But why did you have to spend baby's food money upfront on it? Why did you not get the cot on finance and pay it off over the next few months? Why did you not sell the old crib? What was your plan next week when you ran out of food again? If this is how you handle your finances, you're going to keep ending up in this situation making stupid decisions.

Read the OPs original post. You're personally attacking me for my very sensible take on her situation.

You on the other hand are typical 'hard' left wing. You're opinion is the right one and anyone else will be shouted down and name called, but somehow, you are the 'right' one. Marvellous.

It's mainly paid for I always worked as a single mum and my kids went to nursery. Just like all single mums. Did you think single mums just didn't work or what 🤷‍♀️

Not at 6 months old...

Hiiiiiiiia · 10/09/2024 00:27

all these people getting triggered by this mum taking milk for a baby don't have nothing better to do. is the girl stealing something that will affect your life? no, is it your money she stole? NO. so keep on with your life and leave her alone

TealSapphire · 10/09/2024 00:31

Shoplifting is something that gets so many posters riled up! These people will be cursing OP for causing price rises every time they step into a Boots 😅

Look OP's (attempted) shoplifting is hardly crime of the century. She's on a very low income, looking after a baby. The replies are hilarious 😂 'breastmilk is free' 'don't allow your ex to work cash in hand' 'you shouldn't have provided a bed for your child'. Surprisingly there is actually not an abundance of help for all the people doing it tough. I bet all the posters coming down on OP aren't donating or volunteering their time or money.

If you were nearby OP I'd drop round a few tins of milk - and some moisturiser ☺️

That’s a depressing perspective to only care about crime if you are personally affected. Society would completely unravel on that basis.
