The cost of kids pyjamas!

Enchantedlilypad · 22/08/2024 13:14

I was In M&S today and picked up 3 pairs of new pyjamas for my 4 year old DD and they cost £44!!

Yes I know I could have gone to a different shop and I do usually buy most of her clothing off of Vinted or Asda etc but I happened to be in M&S and I liked them.

How can 3 pairs of 4 year olds pyjamas from a supermarket shop cost £44, everything is so expensive.

M & S clothes are not normally described as ‘supermarket’.

It’s incredibly easy to find cheap PJs. This is not a CoL issue.

cocobeaner · 22/08/2024 13:22

I was also surprised by the cost of kids pyjamas in M&S, so I went to ASDA and they had packs of two pairs for about £16. They are even cheaper in primark but they all had big plasticy pictures on the front and I hate those. The ones from ASDA have washed well though.

FanofLeaves · 22/08/2024 13:24

It’s a lot but not really surprising, in my opinion that’s quite a privileged thing to be doing, picking up multiple pairs of pjs in M&S at full price outside of sale discounts. Certainly not something I’d be doing cost of living crisis or not!

MintTwirl · 22/08/2024 13:25

M&S isn’t supermarket clothing. They also do a range of kids pyjamas at varying price points, I’m guessing you went for the less basic option.

Marylou62 · 22/08/2024 13:26

I'm surprised you are surprised if I'm honest...

Peonies12 · 22/08/2024 13:27

That’s what clothes should cost. Probably still made in an awful factory by workers not paid enough.

Bilbonne · 22/08/2024 13:27

Maybe look on Next Clearance pages

moggle · 22/08/2024 13:28

I don’t think you can go into a shop that is known for being more expensive than many other options on the high street and complain that the clothes are… more expensive than others on the high street.
i kind of agree with you tbh but IMO M&S on the whole is better quality than the multipacks from Asda / Tesco etc- whether that extra price is worth it for something like kids pyjamas that are not worn for long or subject to much wear and tear, I don’t know! I buy M&S pyjamas as Christmas presents for my kids as they are way more than I usually would pay.
if you really want your daughter’s nightwear to last, try buying nighties instead of pyjamas- DD9 is still wearing jersey nighties I made for her before she started reception - they were mid calf length then and still acceptable around company now as long as she wears knickers!

TomatoSandwiches · 22/08/2024 13:28

I buy mine long johns & thermal tops ( they come in multi packs ) from M&S for autumn and winter, much cheaper and keeps them toasty.

TU do good multipacks for summer pjs, not too many tacky designs also.

Bilbonne · 22/08/2024 13:28

Not really cost of living, you just bought more expensive pyjamas you liked.

SummerSplashing · 22/08/2024 13:29

M&S isn't a supermarket shop!

pay for the quality of clothing or go elsewhere. You can't complain at it costing more than at Asda.

Nothing wrong with ASDA, but it's like buying an Audi from an Audi dealer then complaining you could have bought a Fiesta cheaper from the Ford Dealer🙄🙄

MintTwirl · 22/08/2024 13:32

I will say that I’ve found with M&S pyjamas that they wash and lay really well, I have 3 sons and have passed M&S ones down through all three of them whereas Primark/Asda ones tend to go all shapeless and don’t look in such good condition.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/08/2024 13:32

M&S (and Boden) pyjamas had soft seams, were generous and washed well. I bought plain ones for DS a size up, and they lasted from two until about five and were handed down to DD. DD had some hand me downs from friends that had been through two girls already.

They lasted well. I reckon about three/four children and 9 years. 20 years or so ago though but worth the investment.

This. Cotton has to be grown, picked, processed. The clothes have to be designed, made and shipped across the world. Then transported to shops, which have to be paid for.
There's no need for special clothes to sleep in. Old t shirts, shorts and joggers are fine. "Problem' solved!

BertieBotts · 22/08/2024 13:33

I don't think £14-15 is a huge amount for a single pair of pyjamas although it is more than I would pay. I usually buy them in multipacks to avoid paying so much for them. But I would generally think it was a pretty good price if I paid less than £10 for a pair.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 22/08/2024 13:35

Was it a multipack of 3 or 3 “single” pyjamas?

If it’s the latter than £15 each doesn’t sound outrageous. If it was a multipack then I’d expect it to be at least a tenner less

Theleaveswillbefalling · 22/08/2024 13:36

M and S are expensive but even there you can get a 3 pack for £26. M and S is more expensive than supermarkets ans individuals Pjs are more expensive than multipacks.

LlamaNoDrama · 22/08/2024 13:36

M and s isn't exactly cheap. It's not super expensive but I rarely shop there for kids clothes due to the cost.

wutheringkites · 22/08/2024 13:40

You can get a pack of 3 cotton pyjamas for £26 in M&S.

I'm guessing you got a few individual sets including at least a couple of the premium ones.

Bubblesallaround · 22/08/2024 13:44

Not surprised at all. Tbh even if if I liked them I wouldn’t buy them at that price - nobody forced you to buy them there and by age 4 you surely know M&S pjs aren’t cheap by now! I only buy them there if I get them in the sales. Otherwise it’s Sainsbury’s or Asda.

Instaflan · 22/08/2024 13:45

I also just bought some long pyjamas for my son from M&S which I agree were expensive but I liked them and the fabric felt really nice. I then bought some more from Next. Equally pricy but also made me realise the M&S ones are poorly designed. He’s just growing into the age range (2-3) and the M&S ones had really loose waistband and ankle cuffs so they kept falling down, which means I’ll probably just rotate the Next ones and he’ll barely wear the brand new £14 set from M&S.
god, I think I just bored myself writing that out

Ah, sorry, missed that it wasn't a set.

Enchantedlilypad · 22/08/2024 13:46

Yes I bought 3 individual pairs rather than the 3 pack, I know you can get cheaper pairs/sets from M&S as I have got them before.

I suppose I was just shocked at the price for children's pyjamas, I usually buy from Vinted for multiple reasons.

I agree that clothing from M&S etc lasts longer and is better quality.

Hmm

That's what clothes should cost?? Low income families should perhaps go without clothes then..:
