Do you tip Uber drivers?

Just wondering if other people tend to tip the Uber driver each trip? I've just started using them and don't want to end up with a bad rating. However I'm trying to budget well due to my current financial situation and don't want to spend extra money I don't necessarily need to.

I always tip them, but only a pound or two because we're on a tight budget too.
DH never tips them and he still has a 5 star rating. We don't use them very often, though, so maybe he's just been lucky!

No I don't in the UK. I do when using it in the US.

imadreamerrr · 29/05/2024 16:37

Ok thank you that's good to know, maybe I will just tip for longer journeys in future. I always leave a 5 star review for all drivers. Hopefully that will be ok.

I resent tipping Uber drivers because I've never been in a car with one who actually spoke to me.

A couple of times I have, but they've been the really chatty friendly ones. Otherwise, no.

I tipped one receipt and then found out afterwards he’d added a 70p waiting charge to the bill…..but he’d gone to the back of the venue and ignored my explicit instructions of where we were. So that annoyed me. But he was chatty and pointed out points of interest en route as I told him I’d never been to that city before.

Last time I used Uber they took a £1 tip and signed me up to Uber One (£6 a month) without me realising. I’m sure I inadvertently forgot to ‘opt out’ or something but it was annoying. I didn’t realise about the Uber One thing until they took the payment a month later. I did manage to get it refunded but it felt sneaky as I didn’t get any communication about it at the time.

I always tip. I wouldn't if they were rude, driving dangerously or the cab was dirty or something but otherwise I do.

...as long as it's been an exceptional journey that is ok. What I'm not ok with is people leaving 5 star reviews when the driver hasn't been good.

You must have been lucky as the twice I've used Uber it's been dreadful. One driver didn't know where he was going and the other one pulled out in front of a car. We just avoided an accident.

When using a normal Uber I’ve tipped a couple of times off the driver is friendly and goes the quickest route.
these days I often use Uber assist to get my elderly mum home, if they just dump her they get a bad review (only happened once) if they wait to she’s got in the building as I’ve asked they get a £2 tip (fair is £8 so is a decent tip)

I used Uber for the first time after we saw Take That in Nottingham recently. It was chaos with lots of closed roads and thousands of people around, but he turned up to where we were waiting after about one minute and knew a really good route out of the area so I was impressed - plus the final fare was cheaper than the estimate so I tipped him a fiver!

That would get them a tip off me! The amount of utter bollocks I have had to listen to from some taxi drivers made journeys beyond tedious.

Pigtailsandall · 08/06/2024 08:06

I always tip them, unless they are rude, which only happened once. It's a tough job, Uber is a terrible employer and it's hard to make a living from it.

ZenNudist · 08/06/2024 08:09

I always tip. Not only is it a hard job scraping a living, it makes a difference to your rating which in turn affects whether you get picked up at busy times.

BeaFuddled · 08/06/2024 08:09

No. I don't tip anyone anymore.

Bewareofthisonetoo · 08/06/2024 08:11

No -never tip. It is an anachronism and tax dodge.

rookiemere · 08/06/2024 08:13

Usually use Uber abroad where the suggested lowest tip amount is around £1, happy to tip that unless the driving has been bad.

LesFreursDuMal · 08/06/2024 11:29

No, I don't tip anyone, not just Uber drivers. It's enough I'm paying for the service/product itself, staff's wages aren't my responsibility. If they're unhappy, they should take it up with their employer.

Prices are extortionate enough for me to also subsidize their wages.
