Decent areas to live in Manchester.

Hi

Which decent areas would you recommend in Manchester?

The south of Manchester (sale, Altricham etc) seems quite expensive, so what are the other areas that are decent enough to live in, where people are friendly, and there are low crime rates?

If possible, please share the postcodes.

I have been looking on rightmove, zoopla areas like stockport but which area within that are safer?
We are a young family looking to buy a flat/apartment with 2-3 bedrooms. And parks, schools and safe neighbourhood matters to make a decision.

thank you!

Stamford Brook, Broadheath near Altrincham

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142984514#/media?id=media0&ref=photoCollage&channel=RES_BUY

Or Timperley/Altrincham border
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/141644975#/media?id=media0&ref=photoCollage&channel=RES_BUY

A search on Rightmove for properties within 1 mile radius of Altrincham brought both of these up.
Both in catchment for Trafford Grammars. 2nd property in a better area for best secondary school but no schools are bad. Both near excellent primary schools.

Thank you all very much! I received great recommendations on places to look into.
I have a question: How is Bram Hall in terms of the area?

Bramhall is lovely, quite middle class lots of cafes and bars.

YellowLogic · 02/05/2024 15:51

Have you looked at Marple SK6? Its a lovely community, lots of parks, a canal, easy to the Peak District. Regular trains into Manchester, bus or drive to Stockport. Marple has great primary schools, a really good secondary school and 6th form college. Disley and New Mills also might suit if you want a more rural area. Bramhall is also lovely, I'd do a shortlist and actually visit the places if you can. Good luck.

I had to name change for this but if you buy that Stamford Brook flat we will be neighbours! My property is in one of the photos. I am very nice (obvs) But if you buy can you please lock the gate as incessant banging is driving me nuts :). Happy to answer any questions if you are considering it. Or Alty generally.

SwayingInTime · 02/05/2024 16:30

Alty one above better value though!!

Not sure about schools but I think that area is as friendly as the next.

Ihateslugs · 03/05/2024 13:16

I live in Bramhall (SK7) and love it but I think you would struggle to find somewhere for your budget. However, have a look at Hazel Grove which is very close and has good schools. Poynton might be worth a look, I go there a lot as I like the village feel but I’m not sure that I’d want to live in Cheshire East Council at the moment, they are in desperate financial problems and are considering closing some public amenities in the area like sports centres and tips. I’d try to remain under Stockport Council if you consider this area.

Please do, I’d love to help. The primary schools here all seem great, based on feedback from parents rather than Ofsted reports which I don’t read.

TravChief · 05/05/2024 21:42

Avoid Levenshulme, it’s awful. Chorlton has gone downhill since covid, it was always grimy before then. Bramhall is nice, as is Poynton. Stretford offers decent access to Trafford grammars and is a bit cheaper but hasn’t really got a town centre. Sale is pretty bland. West Didsbury is nice but pricey.

hydonian · 05/05/2024 21:51

The nicer areas of Hyde - Godley, Werneth Low. SK14. Someone else mentioned Gee Cross which is quite nice and also in this postcode.

Direct trains to Manchester piccadilly in 20 mins, also bus. Drive to central Manchester in 25 mins off-peak. Where I live in Godley both station and bus stop are a 5 minute walk!
Stockport has excellent connections to London 20 min drive away.
Excellent primary and secondary schools.
I live in Godley, moved from Altrincham, while I was apprehensive at first it's been lovely. I wanted to buy in Altrincham or another 'naice' area like Hazel Grove or the Heatons but we were looking during the Covid boom, everything was crazily priced and we really needed to buy.

People are so nice, always friendly and smile at me, willing to help, it's great.
The town centre is shabby but who cares?

I bought here hoping to sell up and move in a few years but I've changed my mind. We have a lovely large 4 bed with 2 gardens, large driveway etc for the price of a terrace in aforementioned areas. Behind us is countryside and the beautiful Werneth Low. It's quiet, calm and peaceful.

Sale is brilliant! It has nice restaurants like Rudy's and even a Slug and Lettuce

Moorlander · 05/05/2024 22:19

If you like the look of Saddleworth I'd suggest looking at Mossley which is very close with many of the same advantages in terms of views etc but cheaper! Postcode OL5. All primary schools and high school are good, family friendly with good rail link to Manchester, 20 mins to Piccadilly. Can also drive a few miles into Ashton to get tram.

looking at your priorities I'd suggest searching in SK8. It covers the area south of Didsbury around Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Gatley. Heald Green. You're bottom end of the budget but there's a few three bed semis around for your price.

Primary schools are great. Gatley primary is ofsted Outstanding and ranked highest is Stockport and was in the top rated Sunday Times report. Completion is fierce though. The other schools are all good. Look at modern estate properties on the edge in Sharston maybe.

Cheadle, Gatley and Heald Green are great little communities with lots going on and huge amounts of green spaces and choices of independent shops and restaurants. There's even a JohnLewis!

Transport wise it's perfect. Its a few mins to the M60 and M56. There's a mainline station in Heald Green and Gatley on the Manchester Airport line so plenty of trains to Piccadilly in less than 15 mins. There's a station in Cheadle Hulme and one being Built in Cheadle. Stockport main station is ten mins drive and has half hourly fast London trains. And the airport is round the corner. Just beware of plane noise in bits of Heald Green

You'd have to do a bit of hunting to get the right property but it's a fantastic area for families. Stockport is investing millions in a revamped town centre and new hospital but you're equally close to everything Manchester centre offers plus easy access to the Trafford Centre and the Cheshire Countryside. There's five lovely National Trust places within 20 mins at Lyme Park. Dunham Massey, Bramhall Hall, Tatton Park and styal Mill.

Good luck
