We all have a meter I think. Do you mean a pre-payment meter when you have to top up a key?

If so, I believe it’s more expensive per unit or certainly used to be and paying by direct debit would be cheaper.

Most expensive is a slot/key meter.

Cheapest is monthly DD. There are intermediate options with quarterly payments.

Thanks for your replies it’s a pre payment card

Is this new? Has he moved house or had it recently changed?

I found the energy companies were pretty good when I spoke to them about my dad and I’d have thought (hope) they might be willing to change it to a normal meter. Especially if topping up regularly would be hard for him.

He’s lived in the property for years but the meter is a pain in the neck monitoring credit

I would definitely call the energy company and explain that, if he doesn’t have a history of non payment, I would hope that they would help.
