DS sent some great photos of the Northern Lights (taken from Hyde Park in Leeds), and they looked truly spectacular. But he said they weren't all that to the naked eye, he used a long exposure to capture them.

Olive oil is still bargainous in Aldi, or it was last time I bought it - might have gone up again, I suppose.

Time - job applications take a lot of time and effort, so to feel that your efforts weren't even directed towards a genuine opportunity is a pisser indeed. But at least your motor is running now, and that's generally when good things happen.

I have had a pretty big reckoning, money-wise. Cashed in an investment, and have spent the money doing the following;

  • new bathroom
  • new garden furniture
  • paid off credit card
  • bought 5 years class II NI contributions and got my state pension up to 34 years
  • set aside money for dermatology treatment for me
  • opened Vanguard ISA
  • set aside money for DS' birthday/help for summer
  • topped up cash savings (goal is £10k by FYE).

The lump sum from the investment has helped me get over the line on certain goals. I'm debt-free (apart from mortgage, and PayPal credit, which is how I budget for clothes over the year, at about £85 per month), boosted my pension income, and my essential expenditure is now at 65% of my total monthly income, down from around 71%. The remainder is divided between cash savings, investments, mortgage overpayments and 'guilt-free spending' which is an excellent idea for a category, picked up from Ramit Sethi's 'Conscious Spending Plan' system.

It's been quite a busy time, financial admin-wise. DH and I have worked quite hard on this stuff, and spent quite heavily, alongside sorting out the garden, getting some new routines in place for my parents, DH's prep for new job, stuff around the house, helping DS getting sorted with his new house-share...it's all quite big-push, satisfying work, with the added benefit that DH and I are now talking about money more proactively and easily; but now I am very much looking forward to a quiet period when I can consolidate and settle into my own routines again. I have three unfinished online French courses, for example, and two unfinished books, and I can think of no better and more frugal way of spending the next 6 weeks before we go to France than working my way through these.

Come July I'll feel ready to turn my attention to a few more things, like repainting the hall/landings/stairwell/snug. But DS will be home, and if he's looking to earn a few quid, I think I might well pay him to get up the ladder with the brushes this time, rather than doing it myself.

Today, walking the dog, doing the laundry and finding something to eat for dinner feels like more than enough work!

Happierwithouthim · 13/05/2024 20:03

Brilliant update bigskies you've spent that money very wisely improving your home life & your future.

I've been to SuperValu & used €5 off €35 voucher, 20c off baby wipes & 30c off tumble dryer sheets neither of which I usually buy but which are nice to have. Like it'll probably be 12 months before I purchase again & they were both own brand. I also got two hams for €8 which when I used self scanner it said they were overweight(every other pack only had one WinkShock) and a side of salmon for €15.99 and ingredients to make Costco Aussie bites which I want to attempt because I like them in Canada.

I used the Re-turn machine to get €3.70 in voucher but it wouldn't work going into shop so I've those vouchers for my next visit to that shop.

€45 waxing
€2.50 grenade Oreo bar to keep me going.

Just got a letter in the door which states our private road will be done by council if we get our contribution to the project in by 24th May.

There's nothing on it to say what my portion of the bill is! Must seek clarification on that tomorrow.

Will be amazing to have it done, the potholes are all over the road so it's hard on the cars & adds extra time to any journey

Our loo broke today, the ballcock parted company from the bit where the water comes in. A little sticky out plastic bit had broken and it wouldn't stop filling, so was flooding the bathroom. DH managed to isolate the loo so we could have water everywhere else. Any way, messaged the plumber who put our shower in 2 years ago, and he dropped by after work and fixed it in half an hour. So relieved, although we do have another loo it was so nice to get it done quickly. So £40 (cash) to the plumber, but money well spent.

RumBananaSundae · 13/05/2024 21:04

They’re £290 Happier. I’m hoping I like them. And that they fit. Fingers crossed on the road.

That all sounds good Big. You’ve been busy.

Spent £70 today on holiday things. A water bottle that fits my rucksack. It’s been out of stock for months and was sold out in less than an hour. I also bought two T-shirts for wearing in the evening. Had a 30% off coupon so used that. Spent £2.40 on milk and yogurt in Aldi.

Happierwithouthim · 14/05/2024 06:49

Yikes rum Grin
You reminded me I must buy a bladder for my water rucksack for when my runs get longer. Hoping it can be bought separately

OP posts:
lifelongfrugaleer · 14/05/2024 07:21

Great reinvestment there rum and must be such a weight off
fingers crossed it’s a manageable contribution happier

sorry for not mentioned anyone. It’s been neither frugal
nor stress free here (mil). It will pass.
Making me very tired though

needastrongoneagain · 14/05/2024 14:37

I'm so sorry about the job @time, and the crap excuses/reasons.

Pah to stressful relatives. I absolutely sympathise.

We've had that happen to all our loos @Nellieinthebarn. It's a pain turning the water off or trying to isolate one toilet.

I missed the Northern lights too, I'm too exhausted to be up past 10pm. It was all over Facebook Saturday and Sunday.

I stockpiled EVOO a while ago, I've loads of big tins of it. I love olive oil!

That's excellent financial planning and action @BigSkies2022. Checking my NI contributions is on my list. When does DH's new job start? We've done a lot of financial jiggery pokery with our financial advisor in the last year, and we've made some legal changes to the business which have required a lot of specialist legal and accounting advice and I'm glad it's over. And (as lovely as they all were) not to have workmen in the house.

Spends have been 'ish'.
£100 garden centre. Lots of plants, compost and some easier tools for DH to use. We've been basically in the garden all weekend so it was justified.
£200 clothes for DH. Well, probably nowhere near that in truth as I ordered options for him. He had no pull up shorts (no longer able to manage zips and buttons), I found some smart ones in Fat Face rather than joggers. He's always been pretty fashion conscious but stylish and practical are a surprisingly hard combination.
£65 dog groomers, two dogs. I have a 'dog pot'.
££££ food but we did have friends over on Saturday.

Menu plan.

Salmon, roast vegetables and halloumi
Lemon dhal traybake (didn't make last week).
Lemon, chickpea and green herb stew.
Out for a curry Friday night.
Saturday DD's boyfriend is cooking.

hard combination.

Happierwithouthim · 14/05/2024 14:59

I bought a cordless grass trimmer from Screwfix today €62.95, had 37% off. Petrol ones cost triple and I only need it for edge of lawn, and weeds around the place. It has one hour battery time, this will be more than adequate for me.

Ooh need that sounds nice salmon, roast veg and halloumi, all I've all the ingredients, that might go on the menu this week.

There's a food festival on locally, the brochure just got released today. I think I'll take dc and do the food trail on Sat €20 for 6 tokens. We can eat our way around the town, there's lots of demos and music too, if weather's good it'll be great. The organiser is an acquaintance from my college days.

OP posts:
RumBananaSundae · 14/05/2024 16:25

I’m hoping I can work out how to use it Happier. I’ve never used one before and looking at the photographs couldn’t see how you get the water in. I like the idea of eating your way around town.

Sorry about the life stresses life. Hope they pass soon.

Spending today was £14.84 in a combination of Aldi and Waitrose on cleaning bits and yogurt.

Office tomorrow. Should think about writing to the solicitor. Arghhhh. Starting to think about booking somewhere for September. Wondering if they might have a post Olympic hotel room sale in Paris.

Chile1978 · 15/05/2024 13:00

Sorry for not catching up - it's been a bit of a week horribilis with a nasty chest infection. Anyway mostly recovered now thankfully. I'll try and catch up where I can

@marthasmum sorry to hear 💐

Spends - too numerous to mention with various prescriptions, medicine, and easy cook food. Starting to buy for dd birthday too.
Probably easier to mention budget left: £175 so a bit tight with half term before payday
However have bought a few bits and bobs for the garden (ebay did a 10% off code plus then the seller had a 5% off code)

Spends today
€9.20 on lunch from deli, I'd brought lunch with me, I'll eat it Friday instead, not here for lunch tomorrow
€150 on workwear Dunnes Stores, will return some annoyingly couldn't use my €13 vouchers online but I'll use them instore sometime

Buying a replacement bladder for my hydration backpack seems to be more expensive than replacing backpack. It's not urgent so I'll wait a while and do more pricing around.

Rum dd loves food so was very excited at the idea of food taste trail
Chile sorry to hear you've been unwell

Made enquiries about a sewing class for dd, only €15 per week payable monthly, hoping she'll sign up.

OP posts:
needastrongoneagain · 15/05/2024 16:51

I too like the idea of a food trail!

Sorry to hear you've been unwell @Chile1978, sounds rough.

Can you claim anything for workwear @Happierwithouthim?

Spends today.
£40 shopping, the cupboards were bare, I don't know how (well, I do - four adults at home eating all our meals, still amazes me.
£7 Boots, shower gels and hand soap for various sinks in the house.
£52 petrol. The car is a hybrid and I do most mileage on electric, so it's been at least two months since I put fuel in.

Going off plan and making a sweet potato, black bean and sweetcorn chilli for tea as I now need it to last two nights.

Happierwithouthim · 15/05/2024 17:18

I think there is a tax credit need must read it properly, to be fair, they're just clothes, new office is smart casual, current workplace is very casual! Today I'm in gym gear.

need 4 adults eating all meals at home will do a job on your grocery bill alright Wink, the refill pouch for lidl liquid soap is €1.79 I bought it for work recently(FYI not telling you what to do because you're time poor enough as it is)
I have always wondered about electric but I think I prefer reliability of my diesel car.

Think my payment towards resurfacing of the road will be €950 which is a lot of money but I knew it was coming at some stage and had €1k in my head.

Thanks @Happierwithouthim and @needastrongoneagain . Glad to be out of bed but now working double to catch up - both at work and home.

That's a good estimate @Happierwithouthim . Is that a sinking fund in ynab?
Surprised you don't spend more on food @needastrongoneagain with 4adults at home. They're lucky to have you cooking for them.

All up to date with the laundry ✔️ Afraid no frugalling on the line as in the office so had to use the tumble.
5 listings on ✔️
Lunch sorted for tomorrow ✔️

Hoping after May payday I'll be in a better position to assess summer holiday budget. Thinking maybe a trip to the Kent coast or a couple of days in Europe. Max is likely to be £800 for travel and accommodation.

marthasmum · 15/05/2024 21:13

Oh no chile that’s grim when you’re poorly and trying to catch up.

Have resisted renewing Amazon prime as it’s £95. I do need some new running trainers though as mine are literally falling apart, big rips in them! Any fellow runners with recommendations of where to look/ what brands? These have only lasted a year - I go about 3 times a week but that doesn’t seem great?

Happierwithouthim · 15/05/2024 22:58

marthasmum I love ASICS but unfortunately my feet need the dearest ones they have!

Chile it's in a tracking account which you don't categorise Smile

OP posts:
Timetoswitch · 16/05/2024 06:28

martha do you have a local collect option near you on Amazon? I can get items under £25 delivered by Amazon to my local post office for free (as long as you don’t need it next day). My post office is on my route home from work and they hold it for 3 weeks too. The man in the post office now knows me by name 😂

Chile1978 · 16/05/2024 08:19

I've got half term as annual leave so very much looking forward to it @marthasmum so just slugging out the next week and half.
Afraid I'm not a runner, but I have heard good things about running shops that film/monitor your gait and then recommend you shoes. Not sure if you have one near you?

Frugajobs today: lunch packed, walking rather than the tube today, vinted parcel posted, another one to do tonight (which I will walk to), and then will mop floor (rather than asking cleaner to do another hour)

€59.95 on 25m hose on reel, bf bought me power washer a few months ago, I'm limited with hose which has pinholes in it!

My clothing haul turned out quite well bought all cropped trousers which on me are full length, all have elasticated waist which are super comfy. Will be returning top, ds said I look like I'm wearing a curtain, it's lace but it's very see through, and an exercise top which is strange material and also see through, bra is pale lilac! Will exchange two pants for bigger size and one for smaller size. Attaching photos not working

Hope everyone is good. I've been neglecting this thread lately. I've just been really busy. Been sorting out a few life admin things but everything seems to be complicated e.g.

(1) So, I need to order a new fridge because the old one isn't keeping things properly cold. I got a guy to come out to repair the old one but he said it's not repairable. The fridge sits inside a wooden unit. When we bought the house (20 odd years ago) fridges were obviously a bit smaller 'cos most of the fridges now are too wide and/or too tall. I think I've found one that will fit the unit. Just waiting for DD to come home from college and double check the measurements. I don't want to get it wrong or I'll end up with a fridge sitting in the middle of my kitchen! And if I do order it, I'll have to clear out the freezer.

(2) I need to get my alarm serviced. I arranged for an engineer to come out. But he said the phone company have done something involving wireless (?) which means the alarm system will need to be upgraded. But before they can upgrade the alarm system, the phone company need to come out and do something(?). He said he would log a call with the phone company.

(3) I took a half-day to bring the cats to the vet for their annual vaccinations. One of the cats needs eye drops. I went to give the cat the drops that night and realized I never got the drops. So I'll need to take another half-day to go back for the eye drops. They can't post them out because the drops need to be kept refrigerated.

It's all small stuff but annoying and it's eating into my Annual Leave. I appreciate some of you have managed much bigger things like house extensions and all I can say is, hats off to you.

I've also had to book the cats into a cattery for my holidays and book airport parking etc. etc. First world problems........

I was thinking I might need to buy some new summer trousers but I rooted out my summer clothes from last year and I'm happy to report that the trousers still fit. So I've saved myself a few €.

Got home yesterday to discover that Amazon had left me a parcel. But it's not for me or DD. There isn't a proper address on the parcel but there's an Eircode (post code). I could probably put the Eircode into Google Maps and try to locate the proper address. It's in the big town (20 minutes away). I'll see........ If I do find the owner, I just hope it's worth the journey and not something trivial like hoover bags Grin.

Anyway, I'd better go feed the cats and put on something to eat. But I will come back later and try to catch up, even if it's just the last few days.

lifelongfrugaleer · 16/05/2024 19:09

Just get in touch with Amazon and they can track it. Sounds like you have enough faff on

Chile1978 · 17/05/2024 06:00

They look nice and smart @Happierwithouthim . And reasonable prices.

Agree with life @Taytocrisps - I would contact amazon and let them deal with it. They'll probably let you keep the item anyway - the person has probably already contacted them to get a replacement delivered. Life admin jobs just always seem to keep on coming!

Frugajobs yesterday: 3 put of 4. I did not mop!
Frugajobs today: wfh so 2 x laundry and get out on the line, post parcel via walking, pack snacks for dds.

Ins

Happierwithouthim · 17/05/2024 12:50

Tayto sometimes those life admin jobs are overwhelming and when you're alone and that wasn't your life's plan they can be extra annoying.

Agree with all let Amazon look after parcel
I've a couple of returns to make from dunnes order, going to try on again after work & then go in because even though I'm hoping to be in town tomorrow parking there on Saturdays is crazy. I also need to collect my bits from screwfix & then we could stay home in the morning & I might go for a run. Bf is working so I'll get up when he's getting up.

Got Zara delivery today got two white T-shirts, first look I'm underwhelmed so will try them on & perhaps return too.

Ds didn't go to school today which triples my childcare cost plus I'm going to Bryan Adams Tues night so need to pay overnight childcare.
