Safe to give broadband company bank details over the phone?

I filled in the online form with Vodafone to get their social broadband service.

They tried to call me yesterday but I was in a bus so they would call today again to get various including bank details.

I am always worried about sharing financial details on the phone like that especially when I get a call from a call centre (rather than me calling the company directly).

Am I being paranoid? Does that sounds like the normal process to register with Vodafone?

It's becoming increasingly common for companies to ask you to input bank details by using your phone keypad. Last time I updated the car insurance that was the drill. The staff member only sees a hashed version. By no means universal yet though.

Wouldn't want to give them out while on a bus but as long as you're sure it's Vodaphone you're speaking with I wouldn't object on principle.
