If you have a smart meter...

how much do you spend on gas daily during the colder months? And do you use gas for hot water, central heating, and cooking? We put the heating on for less than an hour last night and the smart meter said we had spend early £2 in gas. And the hot water was off! That seems like a lot for just an hour. But is it? Or is it normal?

Just checked and we have used between £1.82 and £2.56 everyday this week. We have gas central heating which is on a thermostat set between 17 and 19 so not sure exactly how long it’s been on for. Also hot water is gas but cooking is electric.

Just checked. Since the start of the month we've spent between £3 to £5 per day on gas. Heating, hob and oven and hot water all on gas. Heating only on when house below 18°. It's been cold the last week.

Highest usage day was just over £4, most days around £3. Heating on pretty much all day - set to 20\21°

We turned it on for just under four hours yesterday and it came to £15! Just for heating...

Currently our gas rates are:

Unit rate: 10.418p
Standing charge: 27.75p

How do these compare to what you guys pay?

Around £8 a day for both, heating set to 20/21 during the day and 18 overnight.

On the current standard tariff

FlamingoFlamboyance · 17/11/2023 13:53

Sorry just seen you said gas only - between £4 and £5 a day

Faithtort · 17/11/2023 14:03

That seems a lot. Do you have a thermostat, if so what temperature do you set it at. If not are you just putting the heating on until you feel warm enough? It might be more expensive to put it on for 4 hours rather than set it to a constant temperature.

We pay 6.76 kWh and 27.47p a day.

150kw in a day seems a lot to me. For comparison we used 65kw yesterday, had the heating on set to 17- 19, live in a 4 detached house.

Wow. Our gas is 6.522p/KWH and just about 28p a day standing charge. We're not on a fix, so yours seems really high.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 17/11/2023 14:37

Have you checked the IHD has the correct rate? Ours takes ages to change.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 17/11/2023 14:41

I have a gas cooker, and my hot water is gas, I have heating on for 1 hour in morning and 3 hours in evening, I use about £2.50 a day. I don't have a standing charge but my first hour of using gas is high

LittleLlama · 17/11/2023 20:32

We are spending just under £6 (on average) a day for gas in November. We have gas heating, hot water and cooking. There are four adults and all of us work or study from home most days. We are with Shell energy - £6.99p kWh 28.61 standing charge….I think there must be better deals!

Sdpbody · 17/11/2023 20:44

When we are home, we spend £10 a day. It's £7 a day on working days. (gas and elec).
