closing Universal credit claim

hellohay · 09/11/2023 09:36

Hi, me and my partner may be moving in together soon and I get a top-up with Universal credit as I work full time. My wages are £24,000 and my partner earns £32,000 per year. I used a benefit calculator and as a couple we would not be entitled to claim anything. Can I just close my claim? There seems no benefit to keeping the claim going. Anyone had experience with closing a claim due to your partner moving in.. Thanks

Do you or your partner have dependent children?

Do you pay rent?

TheGhostILoveTheMost · 09/11/2023 09:47

We're over threshold now so our entitlement per month is £0.
A few months ago dh had to take unpaid leave, picked up significantly less and that month UC paid us about £50.
The first payment in yonks!
I just leave it open. We've both recently started new jobs. You never know what's around the corner.
Better to keep the claim open and receive £0 than start the claim all over again should the need arise.

Yes I have one child. But even so we would still not be entitled to anything

@TheGhostILoveTheMost May I ask What information do you need to provide to UC when your partner moves in?

I think you just report it to them. You'd need to change it to a joint claim so your partner would need to fill out form too.

When he moves in declare the change in circumstances, after 3 months of zero award they often contact you to close the claim automatically.

Preeeettyprettygood · 16/11/2023 08:18

Case Manager here, you can keep it open as after 6 consecutive AP's of £0.00 award your claim will automatically close. You will need to report this change and you'll be given a linking code for your partner to use to make your claim into a joint claim.

Or you can now just request for your claim to be closed and we'll close it down for you.

@Preeeettyprettygood Hi. And thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. What's the process for closing your claim please? Can you just leave a journal message?
