How much is your gas and electricity?

Hi
how much is yours? Ours has gone right up to £770 a month for both with united utilities. We have a 5 bed house and do have a hybrid car. We are in arrears as well on the costs. It seems excessive to me.

4 bed detached, wfh. I limit our DD to £250pm as that's the max I get cashback for every month. However it's pretty much what we owe, any small arrears I do top up on our cashback credit card.

empatheticpretzel · 15/07/2023 21:49

I can't believe these figures. I'm paying an average of over £300 a month for a two bed but use the washing machine everyday and have the heating on each week.

Heating on in July???

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 23:00

It is quite chilly at the moment, I have my cardigan on and am starting to regret packing away the electric blanket after its yearly wash

lampformyfeet · 15/07/2023 23:03

£120 a month electric, £80 a month on oil. 5 bed house

Bromptotoo · 15/07/2023 23:05

£190/month. Two of us in a four bed detached built in 1998. Both at home most days either working on PC/phone or at leisure.

No electric car. Standard capped tariff.

Reduced usage over last 12 months being more restrictive with space heating times/stat and particularly hot water.

Heating on in July???

It gets freezing especially at night. There is the occasional heat wave

Spottydressinggowngirl · 16/07/2023 13:02

5 bed detached. Not massive! We pay £100 electric and £100 oil.
some of the numbers on this thread are crazy!

It will vary a lot depending on where you live in the country, the size of your house, the age of your house, how drafty the house is and how much insulation you have, how long you have the heating on for each day, what temperature you keep the thermostat at.

FWIW both our gas and electricity and MIL's gas and electricity have monthly DDs in the same ballpack as the OP. We were in arrears at the end of the winter (annoying at about the same amount as we were given as a payback in the autumn because we were so much in credit back then) so are partly paying that back. Big 4 bed period properties, one in the NE of England, one in Scotland.

Our house needs more insulation, there's decent insulation in the roof and in the extension at the back (it's about 3C warmer in there than the rest of the house) but we can't have cavity wall insulation and the double glazing is so old that I don't think it is any better than single glazing. Trying to decide which option is best: new double glazing (or warmer curtains!), solid wall insulation, underfloor insulation, solar panels.

pippapipps · 16/07/2023 15:18

I'm not in uk I'm in Ireland but ours is about €330 for electricity every 8 weeks and the gas is €70/80 (during the summer months again issued every 8weeks)
Winter gas bill last year was about €250 for 8 weeks during the cold months
Astronomical prices here and not going down people can't carry on like this, it's double what we paid any other year

Yahyahs22 · 16/07/2023 16:04

180 - will go down to 160 a month for a small 2 bed house.

Ariela · 16/07/2023 16:47

Luckily am on oil which never shot to the heights of 2014prices - 4 bed although 2 beds are scarcely big enough for anything other than a bed, it's compact, oil cost for the year will be about £600-£650. Electricity has gone up from £47/month to about 57-60/month - we have made big strides in turning stuff off. We do have solar which again helps enormously, I'd say covers half our use, ordinarily we'd be averaging £70-80/month I reckon, eg I only use the dishwasher if the sun shines, and we only use solar to heat the hot water from March to end of September. We will get back about £1400-1500 this year on solar FIT payments, which covers our energy costs. We do have masses of insulation, double glazing and the like as well.

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/07/2023 13:43

£330 a month.

Large 4 bed new build house with solar panels

Just checked my account today and it's dropped to £200 a month.

dizzygirl1 · 16/07/2023 20:15

It sounds very very expensive even with broadband. Have you given actual readings? My gas and electric DD is £95 per month (actual cost was less than £70 for June).Broadband 26.99 so my total is £122ish a month.I'm in a 3 bed, myself and 2 teens for reference.

Charcol · 17/07/2023 12:40

WE pay £228 for both.
Although we are overall in debt to energy firm still.
electric is ok, but Gas is like -£300.

But we pay the 228 constantly since Jan, so hope the deficit reduces over the summer.

Workbabysleeprepeat · 17/07/2023 12:41

£229 a month. 4 bed detached. WFH full time and have a hybrid plug in and an electric car. £600 in credit. We are on an electric driver tariff.

Workbabysleeprepeat · 17/07/2023 12:41

Sorry that’s for both electric and gas

Wishmelucknow · 17/07/2023 12:57

Yeah not sure why it’s so much compared to the prices I’m seeing here. We have a new build (well 20 years old) and rooms not massive. Biggest is probably 14 ft by 14 ft but all other rooms much smaller than that. Will just have to see if this economy 7 will help or maybe time to shop around

Agree! We are in a two bed terrace - £60 a month for both in summer and £100 per month for both in winter. (Combined not each)

Heatherbell1978 · 17/07/2023 13:09

You need to check the rate you're paying and the amount you're using because that is huge. You're either paying too much for one or both.
4 bed detached with EV and it's £175 a month but actual usage right now is around £80. I expect that to increase in October when we switch to a new tariff.

Zippedydodah · 17/07/2023 13:17

June/July was £91, dd £110/ month (just reduced from £140) and I’m £390 in credit. That’s with So Energy.
3 bed semi, retired couple. I don’t particularly scrimp because I have chronic health problems and feel the cold; I do have a log burner that uses a £70 load of logs every 10-12 weeks during the winter.

bluesky45 · 17/07/2023 13:42

£110 a month for gas and electric. Currently in credit. Last month we used £56 total. 4 bed detached new build so it's well insulated.

Riapia · 17/07/2023 14:12

£115.16 for both in May.
£ 352 in credit.

autumn1610 · 17/07/2023 14:18

Around £50 for each atm 3 bed semi detached

CookieDoughKid · 17/07/2023 23:26

I don’t think these comparisons are helpful.you need to find out your last month consumptions in kWh. Then your standing order and rate. It should all be on your bill. Post that back and then we can better advise. Fwiw I’m in a 4 bed Victorian but have managed to nearly halve my bill consumption in kWh by tweaking a few things….such as installing a smart thermostat.
