How much is your gas and electricity?

Hi
how much is yours? Ours has gone right up to £770 a month for both with united utilities. We have a 5 bed house and do have a hybrid car. We are in arrears as well on the costs. It seems excessive to me.

£161 per month for both with a wood burner (£150 per month of logs over the winter months). Wfh and use a tumble dryer.

Wishmelucknow · 15/07/2023 18:09

Hi about £850 in arrears. It’s will utility warehouse and £100 if that is broadband and phone. We do have a car charger.
option of economy 7 but pushes day rate up. Going to pay the debt off so she said it should reduce by £230 a month. So would still be looking at £440 a month for every thing which is better! Sad thing is everything is going up so it’ll cover any further increases in mortgage!

You need to check the cost of what you use each year and whether it matches your DD (the £850 of arrears suggests not). Your bill should tell you how many units you use.

There are special EV tariffs, which might not push your day rate up as much as Eco 7. Unless your utility tariff is very cheap, you'll probably be better off with another supplier, £100 for broadband and phone is very expensive - UW has always seemed like a bit of a con to me - you can save on G&E but only if you pay over the odds for the other bundled services.

The other thing to check is that they're billing you in the right units for gas - sometimes there's a mistake which means you're billed for about 3x more than you're using.

But if you are using that much, you should also look at whether you can reduce your usage as it's huge, I thought electric cars were supposed to save people money, so there must be other reasons why your bill is so high - google energy saving advice and look at reducing your heating, hot water, washing and drying and cooking costs, this is where there will be scope to cut down.

We're with Octopus, who are pretty good and have an EV tariff. If you sign up using my referral link, we both get £50 account credit:

Mine is £270 a month for both gas and electricity for a 4 bedroom large detached house

Fluffy40 · 15/07/2023 19:43

Ours is 240 a month, we plug the car in every night as well.

trashcansinatra · 15/07/2023 19:54

We have solar panels and last month we actually earned £11.
However, over the year it's more like £210 a month on average for a big house that takes tons of gas to heat and we both work from home so lots of electrical appliances.

Onceuponatime56 · 15/07/2023 20:03

About £180 and about to come down as we’ve just fixed on a cheaper rate. We are breaking even in both gas and electric

PinkButtercups · 15/07/2023 20:04

£190 for gas and electric.

Dontgochasingunicorns · 15/07/2023 20:16

We had solar panels put in a year ago and all through the winter my gas & electric was about £180-£200, we have a 5 bedroom house and run a hot tub (when needed) but my last bill for gas & electric was £1.81 , I know the panels had an original outlay, but we will make our money back in no time!

Badger1970 · 15/07/2023 20:28

Ours is £280 for electricity on DD and we have a bulk LPG tank which is £300 a month - we're in arrears with that as last winter was so bloody cold.

xyz111 · 15/07/2023 20:33

£170 a month. 4 bed house, I work from home. Is your heating constantly on? Do you have a smart meter, what pushes it up high?

alanrickmanshamster · 15/07/2023 20:49

£90 per month electricity
£50 per month gas

£140 - 5 bedroom house and working from home

Shinytaps · 15/07/2023 21:02

We're £440 for a five bed and we've been paying down arrears. Is something sucking up your electricity? We found out our water tank was costing a fortune so stopped using it and rely on the combi only now. Arrears are nearly gone and we were over a grand at one point.

RuthW · 15/07/2023 21:09

About £90 per month

OldTinHat · 15/07/2023 21:12

£60 a month direct debit. £800 in credit. 3 bed house.

Haleso · 15/07/2023 21:15

£167 for both gas and electricity with BG. We were paying over double this but were over £800 in credit and also the prices have decreased so it has been lowered. I send a reading in every month so I know this is accurate.

Haleso · 15/07/2023 21:15

Should add 4 bed town house, 2 adults and 3 teens.

starlight2023 · 15/07/2023 21:18

£250pm, 3 bed semi

RosesAndHellebores · 15/07/2023 21:19

£340 for a 5 bed, excluding broadband, etc., doesn't sound too bad.

It is difficult to compare without knowing the square footage. Our house is about 3500 square feet. DH said our combined gas and electricity was about £5500 for the 12 months to late May and he expects about £1k to come off next year. We have some adjustment for solar panels and an EV charging point. I wfh two days a week; DH does too but less regularly.

It's an old house albeit double glazed but rooms are big and ceilings are high. We can zone the heating.

Three adults, two kits, too many visitors! Probably 8/9 loads of washing, 3/4 in the tumble dryer, 7 x dishwasher, diligent outside lighting. None of us are chilly mortals and the heating tends to be set at about 17 and our jerseys aren't shy in winter.

Gatekeeper · 15/07/2023 21:20

3 bed semi and my dd is £140 dual fuel. Am in credit by about 200 quid

Polis · 15/07/2023 21:20

£195 a month, and we are also £500 in credit which I might reclaim.

Oooiwanna · 15/07/2023 21:22

Ours is £80 dd. Three bed semi with three of us in the fam. OP that sounds really excessive. We have an electric car too and charge once a week from home x

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 15/07/2023 21:24

3 bed house, work from home half the week.

Electricity about £130-£150 a month depending on tumble dryer use.
Gas we're averaging about £25 per month

Pre payment meter and not careful about utilities use.

ManchesterLu · 15/07/2023 21:32

It's me and DP in a 2 bed terrace with solar panels. We pay £97 a month, and it's gradually increasing our credit.

Also get £30 a month back in cash from the solar power energy that we don't use as it's generated.

LIZS · 15/07/2023 21:36

£280pm although should come down
