How much is your gas and electricity?

Hi
how much is yours? Ours has gone right up to £770 a month for both with united utilities. We have a 5 bed house and do have a hybrid car. We are in arrears as well on the costs. It seems excessive to me.

£170 a month for four bed det.

I'm a few hundred pounds in credit. They only bill me every 6 months so difficult to tell.

areyouhavinglaugh · 15/07/2023 13:09

4 bed
2 adults 1 child

£100pm dd
Was £160 in the winter

Current bill is £60/70 pm this summer

Floralnomad · 15/07/2023 13:12

Largish 4 bed detached and no skimping on heat or electricity and we were paying £180 for both this winter , I’m about £300 in credit on one and £450 on the other ( not sure which way round ) . I’ve temporarily reduced my dd to £65 for both as BG had emailed and reduced them to £40 each and I’m not happy going that low .

singJoanna · 15/07/2023 13:13

June-July bill is £93 but we pay £200 per month to build up credit for winter.
3 bed house with 2 adults and 2 teens.

Parky04 · 15/07/2023 13:16

£107 per month for elec and £40 for gas. 3 bed semi detached with 4 adults.

Rayna37 · 15/07/2023 13:16

Just gone down to £249 for gas & elec. Large detached 4 bed, 2 adults and a child, plus an EV. One person WFH.

Do you live in a draughty inefficient old house? Do you have any obvious things that use a lot of power? Has you usage always been high or is this a recent change?

Nsky62 · 15/07/2023 13:22

I pay as I go £67, this month, 1 bed terrace, cat and I, dishwasher and 3 loads of washing roughly a week.
Use mainly microwave and slow cooker, trying to be extra careful, still it’s a lot for what is is dual fuel

ScoobyDoesnt · 15/07/2023 13:33

4 bed detached with 4 adults (me plus 2 young adult DC and DS GF).

Usual applicances, no EV, and I do work from home 3-4 days a week.

Paying £151pm for both and am currently about £250 in credit before next review in September - am with EDF. Have been paying that amount since last September, and that was even after my old very low fixed rate tariff taken out when I moved here 3 years ago expired. So am hoping for a nice rebate and no payment increase.

Smart meter says have currently spent £48.31 this month on both, so am definitely building a bit of credit over this 'summer' (written as it's pouring with rain and blowing a gale outside!).

VisionsOfSplendour · 15/07/2023 13:41

No need to ask for random numbers read your meter regularly and work it out yourself

Surely after all these months and millions of threads asking the same meaningless question everyone must know by now that monthly DDs are not how much your energy actually costs each month

And, just in case anyone has missed it, what someone else pays is totally irrelevant to your usage

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/07/2023 13:43

£330 a month.

Large 4 bed new build house with solar panels

Justwingingit2005 · 15/07/2023 13:43

300 a month with an ev but that's the amount we set to be sure it was covered they say we should pay 200 a month

TwinsPlusAnotherOne · 15/07/2023 13:43

5 bed detached.

Two adults at home all day and 3DC.

We pay £376 p/mth and our actuals over the summer are about £140p/mth and we went up to nearly £700 at one point in the winter.

Tulipblank · 15/07/2023 13:48

We pay £310 a month. Switched tariffs. So BG took £1100 out of our account (without warning) to settle debit. Fuming is an understatement.

bonfirebash · 15/07/2023 13:50

2 bed apartment
£75pm in summer and around £120 in winter (actual readings)

xogossipgirlxo · 15/07/2023 13:53

No DD here. In June it was £112 gas+elec. 2bed house.

GasPanic · 15/07/2023 13:55

So how much arrears are you actually in ?

If you are in arrears, is it not reasonable for the utility company to try to recover those arrears ASAP ?

Hollyhead · 15/07/2023 13:57

£170 per month for both but we’re heating oil not gas, last tank of oil was £600 which will last a year, so £60 for heating, 4 bed detached but modern house.

Allhailkingcharlie · 15/07/2023 13:59

£160 a month. 3 bed. Direct debit. Using less at the moment but building it up ready for winter.

Cupcakequeen75 · 15/07/2023 14:05

Our current actual usage is about £70/m for G&E in a 4-bed.
Eon keep trying to reduce our DD but I keep it at £100/m to keep our balance up so we don't have to increase the DD in the winter. Balance is currently sitting at just shy of £1k which puts us in a good position for the winter.
Last winter, our actual usage never exceeded £215 in a month with no restrictions and we were using heating, tumble etc as required.

Without knowing the OP's shortfall or actual usage it is impossible to know if their monthly payment is excessive or not.

HairyKitty · 15/07/2023 14:06

Surely @Wishmelucknow its clear that your monthly bill is extremely high but haven’t you considered that
a) it could include debts
b) it depends how much you charge the car at home

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/07/2023 14:22

£203pcm, also in a 5 bed house but no electric car (£180pcm in diesel).
currently £380 in credit too.

cptartapp · 15/07/2023 14:28

£60 a month electric for a four bed with four adults. Couple of hundred in credit.
On oil - no gas. Equates to about £100 a month.

Mugviper · 15/07/2023 14:32

What’s your actual usage like?

Your direct debits are your yearly usage divided by 12 so you overpay in the summer to build up credit to see you through the winter. You said that you’re in arrears so it depends by how much. How much are you paying each month to cover the debt and how much is actual usage?

Your monthly bills will have all the info.

sonypony · 15/07/2023 14:49

£200 a month and I’ve just reduced it to £180 because we’ve built up more credit than we need. We have an electric car, 1 working from home full time and 1 sahm. so someone pretty much always in.

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 15:03

£300 a month but I am expecting it to go down a bit as price has so probably about £260 going forward
