1st time claiming UC

Ngim · 01/06/2023 12:19

Im waiting for the UC to get in touch with me. Ive applied for a new claim on Monday just gone.

How long will it take for me finding out if I'm eligible for it?

Is it the whole 5 weeks or will they let me know earlier than that? (I know it is 5 weeks till i rcvd my 1st payment)

Did you do an online check to see what you might get (eg on Turn2Us)? What’s your query about eligibility (savings? Other assets?) If an online check , completed honestly, says you will be awarded something then usually this will be fine. If you need an advance then let them know, this will immediately tell you if you are eligible!

As others have said, if Turn2Us or similar suggest you're entitled then, subject to any variation (eg fluctuating pay) you should be fine. You won't know the exact amount until after the Assessment Period has ended and UC have picked up pay details (if applicable) via their feed from HMRC.

The Help to Claim service provided by Citizens Advice (0800 144 8 444) are pretty good if you've got a specific worry.

My decision was pretty quick but didn’t have to provide documentation during Covid. Was just a phone call.
They may ask you to attend an appointment to show ID. Have you checked your online journal for any to dos

If you are talking about the advance only take the minimum that you need because it will be deducted in equal parts over the next 10 months . Taking everything that’s offered is tempting but hang claimants find this leaves then in a sticky situation later on down the line.

If you need some help with a food parcel while you are waiting for your first payment contact your local CAB who will happily organise this for you. They may be also able to get help with your fuel bills if this will be an issue while you wait

“Many” claimants not hang claimants 🤦🏻‍♀️
