Low spend / no spend / frugal June

Sorry if there is already a thread, but I've been planning to do a no / low spend June so thought I'd start a thread for anyone else who wants to do the same.

I've already failed today though 🙄😂

I've got a hideous stomach bug and had to cancel a cinema trip today (which had already been paid for). So I've let the kids buy a movie on YouTube to make up for it, which has cost me an unbelievable £16.99 😩.

Hope that's it for today and tomorrow though. We have groceries in and I don't need petrol till maybe Sunday.

126euro today on groceries/meats etc.

JunoPop · 21/06/2023 18:12

Treated myself to waxing today. £30. I’ve made such a hash of it trying to do it myself at home! Aiming for a NSD the rest of the week now tho.

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 21/06/2023 19:04

Just shy of £5 at a cafe today.

Ooo love cat cafes. Apparently we have one in Leeds, but never been there. I always go to my favourite one when we’re in Poland. It won’t be possible now, as they don’t let children under 10yo in.

Aiming for NSD for the rest of this week. We shall see.

Namechange192727171 · 22/06/2023 08:30

Spent 30 yesterday in town as needed a few bits, moisturiser for Dds dry skin/eczema , cost me £9 for 2 bottles hopefully it works. Also bought ice pops, stationery for teenger etc.

Found out I'm pregnant this week! Overjoyed but as above recently lost my job so a bit worried.
Hopefully I might be able to claim contribution based JSA and then maternity allowance to help me out a little.

The nice weather's helping as I can do trips to the park with the youngest.

Worried about the summer holidays as money will be very tight and i have a toddler and a teenger to entertain.

Hope everyone is well.

xogossipgirlxo · 22/06/2023 09:34

@Namechange192727171 congratulations on your pregnancy x

xogossipgirlxo · 22/06/2023 09:48

Ok, NSD starts from now, as I bought waterproof mascara just a minute ago. £5.99 on ebay. I'm very hot now at the end of pregnancy and have panda eyes with normal mascara.

thereallybigsteelcorporation · 22/06/2023 11:39

my no spend/low spend is not going well.

Family birthday dinner arranged for Friday night - estimated cost £70
Sisters baby shower on Saturday and we are going for afternoon tea - cost £28
Family birthday gift needed for Sunday - cost £25 (we give vouchers, it's what we always do, the amount to give/receive is always £25)
Weekly food shop for 5 of us on Sunday - cost around £150 (and that's w/o booze and cutting back. It includes all meals & lunches)

and pay day is STILL another week away yet. F.F.S. I'm going off for a little cry now.

I agree. I can't believe we actually spend circa 350 quid for just two people. We really don't eat that much meat, no booze, shop in Lidl and Asda, home cooked, lunches made at home and it's still so fucking expensive.

moimichme · 23/06/2023 07:57

I keep seeing articles saying that Morrisons or whichever supermarket is now bringing down the cost of groceries to be more competitive. But honestly it must be SO easy for them to say that, even if it's reducing a small number of items a tiny bit, when we all know that costs have gone through the roof, across the board!

My DH does the majority of our food shopping (he has more time to do it), so I really notice how much higher things are than they 'used to be' last time. I'm not impressed that we could buy bread for a tiny bit cheaper price this week, when they may have decided for that to be the loss leader (to get us in store) and so much else is still very high priced. Even things that used to be cheap (tins of beans, Lentils, soup, etc.).

Low spend yesterday, but £2 on coffee at work (subsidised cafe) as I didn't have time in the morning to prepare a flask, and £2.50 on fruit because I didn't bring any for snacks yesterday. I didn't eat it all yesterday, so will have more today. Hoping for a NSD (apart from rent going out, but that doesn't count, haha).

Good luck all!

xogossipgirlxo · 23/06/2023 09:02

Morrison is in financial trouble. If they were doing well, I think they would happily keep these ridiculous prices :/ I don't even go there anymore, no point.

ChristmasComing123 · 23/06/2023 15:51

Had a bit of a no spend blip. Went camping last weekend and ended up buying some food stuff out as had little sleep. Then bought some things online as felt as was still in holiday mode. Returned some online. Need to be stricter until payday. Also worried we have no money saved for summer holidays with kids. Off work for 2 weeks with kids so if weather bad might be struggling for free things to do. Also daughter seems so he growing really fast this now so ordered second hand clothes from ebay. First parcel came with half the items missing 🙄

Yep, same with crude oil. It's one big speculation IMO.

MissVeronicaSpeedwell · 23/06/2023 23:17

@ChristmasComing123 I suggested to DP that we go camping again this year to save a few quid (we have all the camping gear already) but I think he'd still rather pay to stay in a caravan or similar! The issue is that even if we save on accommodation, he always wants to eat out rather than cooking any meals at the tent, whereas the DC & I would be happy to eat something basic...

xogossipgirlxo · 24/06/2023 15:06

OK, so NSDs didn't quite worked out as I assumed. I started packing my hospital bags, so needed few bits:

£27 in Primark for nightie for labour, pyjamas and sliders for husband as the ones he has have been partially eaten by his pet rat, so they have sentimental value 😂 (as rat is long dead now)
£12 in superdrug for some bits like wax strips, hair bands

I need to buy snacks for both of us for hospital, thank you card for midwife and perhaps box of celebrations if I find any at this time of the year.

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 24/06/2023 18:17

Hi all

£60ish on groceries last night (including alcohol though, so that isn't too bad)

NSD today.

@xogossipgirlxo I remember the primary nightie run when I was getting ready for dc2 arrival 🥰. I got some fab ones there which were pure cotton with buttons on the front for boon access. Also got some massive pants (as I knew I needed a cs). Money well spent

@IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo they sometimes have really lovely stuff. This is alao pure cotton, with The Powerpuff Girls😂 I paid 9 quid for it. If it don’t get damaged during labour, I might as well wear it in summer for these hot nights. Currently I borrow my husband’s t-shirts. PJ is also cotton, I thought it will be more comfortable to have shorter t-shirt and shorts than nightie for feeding afterwards, so I don’t have to pull everything up and show my giant disposable knickers🫠

I got almost ran over in the parking lot yesterday. How lovely. I was crossing the street (intending to walk on the pavement) and guy cut through in front of me (taking right lane). His wife was arguing he was right because we were on the road. How?! I was crossing the street, I wasn’t deliberately walking in the middle of the lane like I was vehicle. What a pair of utter idiots. This guy got so scared he didn’t even get out of the car and his wife had to defend him. Coward. My husband is a big bloke and I think he thought he’s going to attack him (which would not happen). What kind of sociopath you have to be to risk hitting people with a car. Some people are hopeless🤬

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 25/06/2023 16:02

That's awful @xogossipgirlxo! There are some truly terrible drivers about and a lot of twats who think nothing is ever their fault too! Seems as if you met someone who combined both traits!

Yep, it would never cross the mind of decent person to do something like this. Absolutely disgusting 👿

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 26/06/2023 12:42

Not too long till payday and the end of the month here which is a relief!

I managed to save some money this month despite a few spendy days (like meeting friend for lunch and father's day). Planning to stick with no buy / low buy for as long as possible. Cannot swear to sticking with no / low spend as I've struggled with not being able to go anywhere with the kids more than anything! But definitely think I can reel in the spending on beauty products and clothes longer term
