Low spend / no spend / frugal June

Sorry if there is already a thread, but I've been planning to do a no / low spend June so thought I'd start a thread for anyone else who wants to do the same.

I've already failed today though 🙄😂

I've got a hideous stomach bug and had to cancel a cinema trip today (which had already been paid for). So I've let the kids buy a movie on YouTube to make up for it, which has cost me an unbelievable £16.99 😩.

Hope that's it for today and tomorrow though. We have groceries in and I don't need petrol till maybe Sunday.

Hi everyone.

£34 for food top up in Asda
£3.80 for iron tablets

@thereallybigsteelcorporation I find these situations problematic too. I know everyone has different priorities, but for me spending £30-50 frequently adds up to quite a lot of money which I'd rather save, pay into pension pot etc. Going out for events or drinks is nice, but sometimes totally not worth the stress of having empty bank account. The worst part is that I don't want to explain myself to anybody, as I find these things private, so always lie that I'm busy or so 😬I can go out for coffee that costs me 3 quid, but don't necessarily want to spend £££ on some weekend activities.

@Namechange192727171 sorry about your job, hopefully thins will straighten out in no time.

I also own Dyson vacuum, we bought it after we got married. This and dehumidifier are my favourite appliances. And my washing machine 😂

thereallybigsteelcorporation · 14/06/2023 12:38

@xogossipgirlxo that is exactly how I feel about going out and spending money. I don't want to spend the money on these things. I've got other priorities as you say - savings, pensions and for me some debt too. I totally begrudge paying for drinks & meals out when tbh I can have just as nice (and cheaper) at home. The cost of drinking & eating out is ridiculous and I don't want to pay those prices. Now, if I really have to go out I have the cheapest meal on the menu and make my drinks last as long as possible to save buying more. I think I have got out of the event with my sister - phew ! That's £30 as a minimum not spent, plus what the drinks would have cost.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 14/06/2023 12:45

Ok today I will get away with spending nothing as brought lunch to work and have dinners sorted for this evening. Should be the same tomorrow. Friday is dodgy cos I am off work and I do love to entertain myself with a trip down the aldi aisles....

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 14/06/2023 18:29

Bought my dcs a snack earlier as they have a sport they do after school as part of a club and I forgot to pack snacks today.

Also sent my dad his father's day present. Altogether spent about £40 today

Glad you enjoyed the night @roundcork even though it was a bit spendy!

Just sorting out childcare for the summer holidays now - even using tax free childcare it's not cheap. Sigh.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 15/06/2023 15:41

I am home from work and not leaving the house again so a no spend day for me as we brought in lunch again and I have dinner organised here.

Tomorrow will be an issue for me though I am sure.

xogossipgirlxo · 15/06/2023 21:17

NSD for me as well.

God, I am really hungry today. Someone should keep me away from the fridge 😂

@roundcork I had to go to Tesco earlier and coveted the Tony's chocolonely - I think it was £3 a bar and I'd have eaten it all in one go so I went for the cheapo Tesco own brand instead. Well, I say cheap, even that had gone up 10p since I bought it a couple of weeks ago Confused

food is getting still more and more expensive, I don’t see prices dropping as some people say

MissVeronicaSpeedwell · 16/06/2023 13:50

The only food price I've noticed dropping @xogossipgirlxo is our Tesco toastie loaf, it was 95p a few weeks ago and is now down to 85p. Mind you it was 60p a year or so ago anyway Confused

Rainbow1901 · 16/06/2023 18:23

Hospital car parking £1.90 and then town parking £2.00 along with a £2.50 t-shirt and £1 toy for GS from Primark. DD treated me to an iced coffee and toasted teacake. Oh!! and 99p for a large universal clip for a pipe for the fish pond!!
DH has been re-lining the pond (budgeted for) as we had sprung a leak - unfortunately a kamikaze fish attached itself to the pump in their temporary home and subsequently suffocated all the other fish!! So silver linings and all that!! We could have a swimming pool for a while!!
But seriously DH has lots of birthday/christmas gift vouchers which should have gone to a new garden 'object' that he wanted - but now we need to buy more fish instead!!

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 16/06/2023 18:43

NSD today

I'm doing well on my plan to only spend on food or fuel, although had to stretch my rule to include a prescription and dog food! So last week spent £30 on those two things. No other spends though.

MissVeronicaSpeedwell · 17/06/2023 09:22

@roundcork I'm jealous of your Tony's chocolonely fix Grin my favourite is the honey & almond one <dribbles at the very thought of it> what a shame about your DC's reports though! My DC's classes both apparently give out reading awards, although I'm starting to think these are mythical as my DC never receive one, despite me faithfully filling in their report books every night...

@Girliefriendlikespuppies I have the prescription prepayment direct debit, would that work out cheaper for you? I think it works out more cost effective if you have 13 or more prescriptions every year.

@Rainbow1901 my DC would love a pond but we have a tiny garden - we have to stop and look at a neighbour's fish every day on the way to school instead!

BounceyB · 17/06/2023 12:25

Over the past 3 days I've spent £10. Food ship is Monday and it's going to be an expensive one. I'm just really in the mood for taking myself out shopping and buying clothes but it's so dangerous, as I know I can’t be trusted in shops.

I'm not poor but I need to save some money, as I lhave no buffer at the moment for household stuff, if anything goes wrong. I just need a bit of encouragement to keep going.

xogossipgirlxo · 17/06/2023 12:28

£55 in argos yesterday for clothes airer and baby bathtub. Our old airer was broken by cats. We use it, but it’s very wobbly and too big now, so it was time for a change.

xogossipgirlxo · 17/06/2023 16:19

Oh and 14 quid in Polish shop today. We need fruit and veg top up, but it can wait till Monday.

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 18/06/2023 12:22

A spendy couple of days this weekend due to all the dads/dads in law etc.

Don't want to think how much it is I've spent but it's in the region of £150-£200 😬

Need to be extremely careful for the rest of the month now.

I’ve been reading all your posts and they’re giving me a much-needed boost. Knowing I’m not alone when it comes to the challenge of spending less makes a huge difference! I’ve worked out that I have £200 left in my personal account until I get paid on the 15th July. This is £8 a day and I really need to stick to it as I’ve been going overdrawn every month for absolutely ages 😟. My weakness has always been beauty products and clothes so trying to be much better with regard to both. Less mindless online browsing would be a good start for me…!

Our joint account is for all the essentials- food, fuel, bills, mortgage etc. I find this easier to manage as we tend to consume the same amount every month of these sorts of things.

xogossipgirlxo · 18/06/2023 16:21

@JunoPop I just joined thread for people who like to buy (too many) toiletries. It’s on style&beauty. Something needs to keep me accountable to use up what I currently have. I don’t mind having extra shower gel or deodorant, because I know I will need them anyway, but make up is the worst for me. Takes you ages to finish bottle of foundation or another blush or lipstick🫣 And it really eats your money, doesn’t it.
