I am fuming, not sure if it's my own fault. I was asked by my new employer to get a dbs check before I start in a couple of weeks. It should cost £25 which they will reimburse. I went on to dbs online which charged me £77. I immediately called them to ask why, the woman at the other end said they weren't the gov website one. I was gobsmaked and asked her to cancel the payment- she did but then told me they charge a £15 cancellation fee - I am so angry. There was nothing there to say it would cost £77 before I made the payment. Any advice would be appreciated before I go and confess my stupidity to my husband and admit that I've wasted £15 on nothing.

Sounds like it was a scam site pretending to be the DBS one. Contact your bank - they may return it due to this.

Thank you both, it was paid via credit card so I'm going to have to speak to my already grumpy DH (always on a Monday) and ask him to contact the c/c company (it's his account and I'm an additional card holder) just feel like a fool

I'm sorry but it's not a scam, they are offering a service and you are paying for it, the fact that you didn't check the site was the correct one, or read the information on the page, or check the payment amount isn't anyone else's fault and you'll be unlikely to get the credit card company to refund based on your lack of checking.

If you search 'DBS online' in google, the first result is the government site which has .gov in the URL.

I'm guessing you've used the dbs-online-org.UK. Which has prices on the home page, says it's a Business to Business service and at the bottom of the page says it isnt affiliated with the Government services.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but yes it's your fault you didn't bother to research what you were paying for. Gov websites end in "gov.uk ". I don't think you have any recourse, although you could try.
