British Gas want me to send meter reading in but i've already got smart meters

Has this happened to anyone else? As far as i'm aware my smart meters are working, according to my IHD. Is it because the prices are due to go up and they just want to double check my usage or something?

Probably just to check readings are correct.

I have a smart meter but for some reason BG can’t read it. Are your bills done with smart meter readings?

concernedalot · 10/03/2023 16:32

Yes they are, as far as i'm aware. I haven't submitted a reading since I had them installed ages ago. Maybe they just want to check all is ok. Would be nice if the email said that to clarify it though..

I submitted a reading 10 days ago yet they are asking for another. They anit getting it though. I send one on the last day of every month.

Bitterestpil · 10/03/2023 18:30

I phoned them because they asked for readings they said the old smart meters need to be updated as the software is not compatible, very annoying. They said they were “working on it”. 🤬

NomadicSpirit · 10/03/2023 18:30

This apparently is standard (at least with my provider) and can be ignored if you have a smart meter.

Floralnomad · 10/03/2023 18:31

BG are / have just moved all the accounts on to a new system apparently and frankly for a user it’s in disarray. I don’t have a smart meter and they didn’t email me to remind about readings so estimated my quarterly bill . I then tried to submit readings but it would only allow me to submit the gas not electric and when I look on the account now I can’t see any payment history etc .

concernedalot · 10/03/2023 18:50

Thanks for the replies. I guess i'll just submit it and see what happens, I was just curious to know. I suppose i've got a big fear of them whacking me with a huge bill and that they've got it wrong via the smart meters. But whatever it is I suppose i'll have to face it. I already pay £270 pm for a 3 bed detached. Don't want it to be any more but what will be will be!

I've had the same. Save yourself the hassle of contacting them. They just say that you have an older meter which they can't get readings from now. My mum's British Gas meter is much older than mine but they can get the readings from hers! They say they are "working on it" hoping to sort something or else people will need new meters. I find it a real pain as haven't had to submit meter readings for a couple of years.

concernedalot · 12/03/2023 14:42

I've submitted the readings today at their request, but by looking at the smart meter figures from a few days ago it appears that they are working and submitting as they should.

What has shocked me though is finding out i'm £1100 in credit on my account despite paying £270 per month. How the hell could they have got it so wrong? They're making money by accruing interest on my money whilst I struggle to pay my monthly bills. It's scandalous! Surely the whole point of smart meters is to submit accurate readings so how the hell they've managed to get me that much in credit is totally beyond me! (unless i'm not understanding things correctly)

Is anyone else in massive amounts of credit with them?

For anyone who has a lot of credit and still paying a lot monthly you can either request a refund which will be a cheque or if you have got the app it may be possible to reduce the direct debit amount or both.
