If you applied for UC how long after did you get a response? Was it the full 5 weeks or earlier?

What do you mean by response ? once you have made the claim you will have an online journal set up and they will communicate with you, tell you what appointments you may need to go for to verify ID if you are not able to do that online. If eligible for Uc then your first payment is made one month and seven days later as long as everything is verified properly by then. You may be able to take an advance payments soon after applying to tide you over until first payment. They can't work out what payment you will receive until they have seen things like tenancy agreement if you rent and payment can't be worked out until they see what earnings you have had in your assessment period. The payment is then made seven days after the end of your assessment period. Your first assessment period starts the day you make the claim online and ends one month later.

The 5 week wait is built into UC.

You should get an email after applying though that tells you it's in hand and of you need help to use journal or call UC etc.

I would recommend calling UC tbh, everytime I've called they have been far more helpful than the journal which often goes ignored.
