Electric Dec £387 WTF?!

Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:20

I can’t even fathom how this is so much, our smart meter went in on the 6th Dec and we’ve been away from the 21st Dec. Before we left I switched off all the plugs which have things on standby (TVs etc). This is just electric as we have oil (don’t even get me started on that). One day was £28, I can’t even think why now but it’s terrifying!

How the hell?!!

Is your heating electric?

Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:27

No, oil

Electric shower? Lots of cooking on those days?

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 31/12/2022 13:31

Are you sure your meter is reading correctly? If it's new and giving you readings like that either you have a enersion heater on, have a hot tub, or a grow in the attic. Grin

Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:32

No electric shower either. Kitchen appliances are electric (hob, oven, ninja airfryer which is used over the oven 95% of the time)

it’s just insane, especially if prices are to rise again

Our bill was £640 for 22nd Nov - 22nd Dec. This is for gas and electric together, with the government £66 taken off.

Talia99 · 31/12/2022 13:32

It sounds to me that you have something drawing a massive amount of electricity. Do you have an older chest freezer? I think someone has mentioned before that if the seals go, they draw an insane amount of electricity.

If not, maybe make a list of your electrical items and try one of those devices you plug in between the plug and the wall to check the amount of electricity each is drawing?

Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:34

None of the three listed (shame 😉) I hope it’s wrong!

Or this - accidentally leaving an immersion heater on 24 hours a day can cost a fortune.

Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:36

We only have the one fridge freezer , it’s fairly large but only 6 months old. But you’re right, we’re home tomorrow and I’m going to have to launch an investigation!

It’s scary isn’t it?! We’ve also had the gov incentive but it’s still crazy expensive!

My only thought now is that we are on an economy 7 meter/ tariff, I wonder if the smart meter is taking this into consideration, I can’t see any day/ night usage breakdown on the app

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 31/12/2022 13:40

Do you have before/after meter reading that you can compare? Sometimes it can take a while for smart meters to actually show the correct readings (though I've never seen it out by hundreds of pounds before)

autumnboys · 31/12/2022 13:40

Either something is wrong with the meter, or you have something drawing a huge amount of electricity. For comparison, my highest use day all year was Christmas Day when I used 17.8kwh of electricity, oven was on for several hours. If it doesn’t heat your house or water, 28kwh in a day seems insane.

Are you charging a car or anything "big" overnight that could make a difference if it is on the wrong tariff?

Hellocatshome · 31/12/2022 13:45

Even if it was charging everything at day rate you wouldn't expect the usage to be that high especially when the property was empty and no electric heating.

c3pu · 31/12/2022 13:46

Why are you on economy 7 if you have oil heating?

The electric on E7 is massively more expensive during the day, unless you have storage heaters and run an immersion heater over night it will be loads more expensive than a regular tarrif.

WannabeMathematician · 31/12/2022 13:48

You said you were away for 9 days? On the 25th it looks like you used 9kwh. We use 12ish on a day when we are home so something is drawing a lot of energy if those reading are correct.

That's £s not kwh on the OP

Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:53

@BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter I didn’t take a meter reading the day the meter was changed (I was actually laid up in bed with a sickness bug) I wonder if it’s something go the engineer did and we could get. No electric cars or anything big. Because of the economy7 meter I do set the dishwasher/ washing machine/ tumble dryer to come on overnight, we never run them in the day time.

exactly @Hellocatshome

@WannabeMathematician thats actually £££ usage. I’ll post the kWh usage which looks to have been 20kwh per day whilst we have been away…

OP posts:
Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:54

In kWh

Electric Dec £387 WTF?!
OP posts:
Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:55

Quite honestly because it was there when we moved to the property and I haven’t looked to change it as I thought we could work with it by running appliances over night but I think I definitely need to look to changing

OP posts:
Happycroc · 31/12/2022 13:56

Sorry @c3pu that was in response to your post, I failed to quote you in my reply

OP posts:
WannabeMathematician · 31/12/2022 13:56

Oh. I read the graph wrong. It’s in pounds? Do you have you usage in kWh?

WannabeMathematician · 31/12/2022 13:57

Sorry cross post due to bad signal! That’s mental! Seem like something is waaaaay off
