What time of day (or night) do you put your heating on?

As the title says: curious as to when people turn their heating on, especially if they WFH. We are trying to do evening only because in the morning our cleaner opens all the windows (which is of course necessary to air the place and get some fresh air in) so any heating before then would only last until she arrives at 8:30. It seems like a waste of time since we get up, then immediately shower and get dressed. We then wrap up warm and use plug-in throws on our laps. In the evening we turn the heating on (up to 18 degrees) for an hour or two when we finish work so we can be more comfortable while having dinner and watching some TV. Curious as to when and how long for, others turn their heating on.

Mine's on at 18° overnight and 21° in the day so never off (health condition, not able to work, almost always home).

ohioriver · 15/12/2022 16:35

Mine runs all day in my study. I turn off the other radiators during the day and turn them on again at 5.

The thermostat is at 19

Heating is off overnight and on in the morning from 6-8am and the evening from 5-9.45pm

Hyperion100 · 15/12/2022 16:38

Hour in the morning to dry the towels and give the house a bump.

An hour or two in the evening.

I WFH and just sit with thermals, blankets and hot water bottles.

Its currently 12 degrees so a lil bit chilly.

monsteronahill · 15/12/2022 16:42

I turn mine on when I get up, so 6-7am. Off when I go to sleep so 10-11pm! On for about 16 ish hours a day, set to 20-21•. Off overnight as we like to sleep in a cold room, although it's set to come on if the house is below 15• which it hasn't yet (even though it was -8 outside last night!)

FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2022 16:44

17c overnight and 19.5c through the day.

mast0650 · 15/12/2022 16:45

We have the heating on all day from 6am to 10pm but not very high. From 14 to 19 degrees in different parts of the house at different times of day eg office is warmer earlier, living room later. It would be freezing otherwise. For some reason it didn't come on this morning and it was 8-10 degrees at breakfast!!

Fortunately we can afford to stay acceptably warm during the day. I don't see why being warm should be reserved for the evening. Workplaces have to maintain a reasonable temperature.

bigbluebus · 15/12/2022 16:47

Ours comes on at 6.30am until 8.30am and is set at 19°c. It then goes down to 16°c until 4.30pm then back to 19°c until 10.00pm ay which point it switches off completely. Temperature in our bedroom dropped to 15.9 but it was -10°c overnight.

Bobbybobbins · 15/12/2022 16:48

On from 6am-8.30am at 18
Off during the day apart from weekend when kids are home
I am home 2 days a week but use oil filled radiator to heat 1 room
On from 3.30-9pm at 18
Off overnight

squigglesquirrel · 15/12/2022 16:48

Those of you putting yours on for longer, do you
have fairly energy efficient houses meaning it gets to that temperature and stays there, so it’s not constantly on that entire time and would just come on again here and there if needed?

Or do you have a leaky draughty house like us? If we put our heating on for 16 hours we’d go bankrupt!

MintJulia · 15/12/2022 16:49

I have semi frozen pipes and it's due to be -7 here tonight so the heating will be on very low all night.... for the first time ever.

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/12/2022 16:54

@squigglesquirrel I'm in a draughty single glazed sash window uninsulated top floor 1 bed flat (1850s converted terrace), with an unheated vacant flat underneath me and uninsulated loft above.
My boiler and radiators got replaced in 2019, and I've got a thermostat in my hall/TRVs on the radiators.

Mykittensmittens · 15/12/2022 16:56

I’m so jealous of people having their heating on for big spells - what a state this country is in.

45 mins in the morning (30 of that before alarms go off) to warm up bedrooms which will have dropped to 14c overnight, and warm clothes and towels during showers. It then comes on again at 3.30 for 1hr 30, while kids are home and in their rooms doing homework and changing etc.

I quietly freeze all day WFH wearing 4 layers and have a hot water bottle between me and my oodie. It was 11c in my kitchen at lunchtime.

we have a 4 bed detached and my gas, on this usage basis, was £190 between 12/11 and 12/12 - I don’t understand how anyone can have their heating on all day in a similar house. We are so cold. Doesn’t help the biggest room is north facing and doesn’t get sunlight help. Electricity is another £150 on top of that (no portable heaters, drier is banned, clueless cranky).

FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2022 16:56

In this weather it kicks in regularly in small bursts. It's not as costly as it looks because the flow on the combi boiler is down to 65c.

What time of day (or night) do you put your heating on?
NewBootsAndRanty · 15/12/2022 16:58

@Mykittensmittens mine's only on so much because I have COPD. I'd swap to not needing to have it on in a heartbeat.
Still jealous?

iliketartan · 15/12/2022 17:16

Ours goes on around 9am until I switch it off around 9pm and it's costing a small fortune but can't cope with being cold plus have to dry laundry (no tumble dryer)

monsteronahill · 15/12/2022 17:25

@squigglesquirrel

Our house is fairly energy efficient - it does obviously drop in temperature if the heating is off, but not to extremities I don't think, I think it's B rated I think. I definitely thinks it makes a difference, we pay similar (large detached, several bedrooms and bathrooms, open plan kitchen living space at the back and other downstairs rooms) as our friends in a 3 bed semi with two downstairs rooms.

The heating clicks on and off through the day, I'm not sure how many hours of the 16 it's actively heating tbh. I just worked out my usage and I think gas alone (gas run central heating) for the last three and a half weeks it's cost about £150.

RuthW · 15/12/2022 17:29

5.15am to 7.30am.

3pm to 9.45pm.

No one here works from home.

I need heat in the mornings.

RandomPerson42 · 15/12/2022 17:30

Comes on early for 2 hours so not freezing when kids leave for school.

Comes back on before they come home from school and stays on until 9pm

We both WFH

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 15/12/2022 17:30

I'm at home all day, so it's on from 8ish in the morning until about 9pm

MidnightMeltdown · 15/12/2022 17:32

Mines on 19 during the day, from when I get up until when I go to bed. At night it's off as I like to sleep in a cool room.

Ilikewinter · 15/12/2022 17:38

Set at 18 degrees from 5.30am until 8pm. However I sometimes boost t to 19 /20 if needed.

Fairylightsandstuff · 15/12/2022 17:38

Mines on 21.5 all day!

Snozwanger · 15/12/2022 17:39

Ours is set to 17° at night and 18° in the day. It's controlled by the Nest and is never specifically switched on or off. We have turned it up a degree or two this week as it's been freezing.

Fairylightsandstuff · 15/12/2022 17:40

Sorry clicked post too soon.

my house is old and has single glazed windows so it doesn’t feel like 21.5. I have babies and children and it’s a big old house so needs heat.

WorriedMillie · 15/12/2022 17:42

Before this cold snap, Outs was on from 6.30-8am, then 4-7.30 ish. I WFH, under a heated throw (best thing ever!)
The past 2 days, it’s been on all day, set to 16 degrees.
When it warms up, I’ll revert to the usual pattern
