What time of day (or night) do you put your heating on?

As the title says: curious as to when people turn their heating on, especially if they WFH. We are trying to do evening only because in the morning our cleaner opens all the windows (which is of course necessary to air the place and get some fresh air in) so any heating before then would only last until she arrives at 8:30. It seems like a waste of time since we get up, then immediately shower and get dressed. We then wrap up warm and use plug-in throws on our laps. In the evening we turn the heating on (up to 18 degrees) for an hour or two when we finish work so we can be more comfortable while having dinner and watching some TV. Curious as to when and how long for, others turn their heating on.

I wfm for the most part. 18 at night 20 during the day although if I’m too warm cold I alter the thermostat.

Hugasauras · 15/12/2022 19:12

That's why I said 'if'.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 15/12/2022 19:15

Mine's off at night and on all day if I'm WFH and it's cold.

janeeyreair · 15/12/2022 19:18

24 hours during the really cold weather. 6 - 9 am and 5 - 10 pm other times but I put it on during the day if Im cold.

anythinginapinch · 15/12/2022 19:21

When I'm cold.

Oakbeam · 15/12/2022 19:26

Ours is on from half four to nine set at 17. The thermostat is in the hall which is colder so other rooms are warmer than that. If I’m cold during the day, I light a fire.

DeathMetalMum · 15/12/2022 19:36

Heating is off 10pm-6.30am. We've been having it on to 15 in the morning and then in the afternoons from about 1.30. Then about 4 we put it to 16 and 18 about 6-8.

Our house has been dropping to 10c downstairs most nights this week. Despite us having curtains on windows and doors, carpeted floors and draught excluders.

Orormno · 15/12/2022 19:50

Ours is on 1800-2000. Set to 18 degrees. It’s fucking freezing. Although the thermostat is set to 18 downstairs is only reaching 17 and upstairs 15 in that two hours. But that two hours is costing us nearly £6 a day and that’s not including the standing charge or the cost of heating the water (which is on at a different time) so we can’t have it on more. I’m wearing 5/6 layers during the day and getting under a blanket at every opportunity

cantbeforeal · 15/12/2022 20:03

Mines set to 14 all the time, that seems really low now after reading this. My house is old and not insulated properly though so if I had in any higher it would just be running constantly. 14 just seems to be where I can have it so we're not freezing but it's not constantly running.

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/12/2022 20:09

Thats because it is really low @cantbeforeal

Effects of temperature on a healthy person:

24°C+ – Cardiovascular risk of strokes and heart attacks
21-24°C – Increasing discomfort
18-21°C – Comfortable temperatures
16-18°C – Discomfort, small health risks
12-16°C – Risk of respiratory diseases
9-12°C – Risk of strokes, heart attacks
<9°C – Risk of hypothermia

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 15/12/2022 20:18

It is always on. We set it low at night shortly before bedtime and turn it back up when we get up.

RaininSummer · 15/12/2022 20:23

Mine has been on 3 hours now tonight and it's 13.5 degrees now.

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/12/2022 20:26

You'll need a few hours more to get it up to a decent temp.
My bedroom took over 3h to go from 14 to 18 the other day.

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/12/2022 20:27

^ the unheated bit at the bottom of my flat stairs leading onto a central landing is 11°, I'm assuming you're starting from a similar temperature

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/12/2022 20:28

Sorry that was to @RaininSummer

All day from 6am until 10pm at 18-20c, we are retired.

InFiveMins · 15/12/2022 20:31

I never put the heating on overnight.

During the day I like to keep it on around 20 degrees, but turn it off around 6/7pm and then sit under blankets to stay warm whilst reading or watching TV.

user1487194234 · 15/12/2022 20:32

We are normally out of the house 8 until 6
Heating on 6 to 8 am and 6 to 10 pm
More if we or the teenagers are in during the day,and at the weekend
Been really cold this week and has been on pretty much 24/7

Ayeaken · 15/12/2022 20:35

Mine's on 24/7, set to 21 degrees.

Wakk · 15/12/2022 20:39

It's not necessary to open all the windows every day.

toastfiend · 15/12/2022 20:39

We set our thermostat to 19 during the day and 15 overnight (never drops that low as house is well insulated). The heating just comes on when it drops below 19 for a period of time to get it back up to that temperature. So it's on frequently throughout the day, but only for short periods. In the cold weather we're averaging about 4-4.5hrs of heating a day - I'm finding it much warmer and more economical than when we were just turning the heating on for set chunks of time morning and evening as the house never really gets cold so doesn't take long to warm up. When it was warmer a couple of weeks ago it was only on about 1.5-2hrs a day. We also have a wood burner that we light in the evenings.

I wfh and, whilst I'm happy to wear a jumper and dress appropriately for the fact that it's winter, I refuse to sit there shivering under a duvet whilst trying to work (I realise that I'm very lucky that that's a choice I can afford to make at present).

Ragwort · 15/12/2022 20:40

Usually 6.30am - 9am and then 4.30pm - 11pm ... DH retired (but active and out and about) and I work part time so we don't usually need it in the day time. We will leave it on low tonight as we had frozen pipes last night ... fortunately they thawed out.

I take a hot water bottle to bed ... DH and I have separate bedrooms, he did suggest we share to keep warmer ... I prefer my HWB Grin.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 15/12/2022 20:47

I put it on at 6:30 for an hour so it’s warm for Dc to get dressed/ have breakfast. If I’m working from home I light a stove in the room I work in if not heating is off till I come home. On for an hour and light two stoves which heat the house through.

LittleRen · 15/12/2022 20:51

So you are trying to be frugal with heating but you have a cleaner every morning who opens all of your windows??! That doesn’t make sense. Why do all your windows needs opening every morning?

Ours comes on an hour before we wake up, normally for a couple of hours. It’s on from around 3pm through to 9pm but the nest controls it all - pre heats etc so it’s not constant.

user53852098 · 15/12/2022 20:56

I have just set ours for 17 overnight for the next two nights as I am concerned about the condensate pipe freezing, I had an email today from BG about how to defrost it if it does but our boiler is upstairs so pipe is quite high on wall so a bit awkward
