What time of day (or night) do you put your heating on?

As the title says: curious as to when people turn their heating on, especially if they WFH. We are trying to do evening only because in the morning our cleaner opens all the windows (which is of course necessary to air the place and get some fresh air in) so any heating before then would only last until she arrives at 8:30. It seems like a waste of time since we get up, then immediately shower and get dressed. We then wrap up warm and use plug-in throws on our laps. In the evening we turn the heating on (up to 18 degrees) for an hour or two when we finish work so we can be more comfortable while having dinner and watching some TV. Curious as to when and how long for, others turn their heating on.

One hour from 6.30am-7.30am.

That's it.

I light a log fire at 4.30pm and burn until 10pm. I leave all the doors open and the rising heat takes the chill off the bedrooms.

I can't afford the £10 a day to heat the whole house. That's £300 a month.

My solid fuel and logs cost me £300 in the summer. They should last 4-5 months.

That's a saving of about £800 this winter. Gas is so expensive.

Downstairs 2 hours in the morning set to 19, 2 hours in the evening. Rest of the day it’s 17, then 16 overnight.
We have individual Tado things on all the upstairs radiators so they shut off sooner and are cold during the day.
Luckily the back of the house is south-facing. Blissfully warm at lunchtime on the sofa in front of the patio windows.

3WildOnes · 15/12/2022 21:15

6am-10pm 19oC

We live in a 3 bed 1930s semi. We have to have the heating on all the time otherwise we get condensation on the walls because they’re so thick and not insulated (can’t insulate as there’s no cavity).

We have it at 15C from 9:30pm until 6:30pm then 19C from 6:30-9:30pm. We have electric blankets on our bed, an electric heater in the bathroom and a bioethanol stove (this makes a huge difference as fuel is cheap and it throws off so much heat) in the living room so we really are never cold. Last month our gas and electric was £244, this month it’s going to be closer to £350 based on our smart meter. Luckily we have £700 of credit and pay £140 a month plus £66 from government so I’m not worried.

1-2 hours evening at 20 degrees - were are really strict as we simply cannot afford it to be on any longer - I WFH and just wear lots of layers and still shiver but do star jumps to warm me up!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/12/2022 21:41

low overnight at the moment to prevent frozen pipes. I don’t like heat at night.

17-18 during the day.

SquigglePigs · 15/12/2022 21:58

DH and I are at home all day because we both WFH so it's on permanently on a thermostat. 18-19 during the day and 16 overnight. Some rooms are warmer than others and some of the radiators are on higher than others. I have a snuggly blanket on my legs in my office because it's colder as it's more exposed and the window seals aren't great, and always at least 2 layers. DH doesn't feel the cold as much so although he wears a 2 layers he's turned the radiator in his room off as the residual warmth from the rest of the house is enough.

LaPufalina · 15/12/2022 23:11

19 from 6am-9pm and 16 overnight but I turn it down to 15 if it's just me in the house (big house with three floors), I just have an oil filled radiator in my tiny study and take the edge off with 20 mins a couple of times a day. I have heating controlled by an app which makes it easier.

6.00 - 8.00 am
2.30 - 8pm

TheShellBeach · 15/12/2022 23:23

Ours is on 24/7.

VanGoghsDog · 15/12/2022 23:31

Normally just a couple of hours in the evening at seventeen degrees. I also wfh.

But today it was minus eight when I got up and didn't get above two degrees all day, so I put it on sixteen all day. When I went to bed the smart meter display was showing £18.75 😱

louderthan · 16/12/2022 00:21

I'm staying with my mum at the moment, she is 78 and cannot deal with being cold. Heating goes on at about 8am and is never off before 10pm. We can afford it. We would sacrifice everything before heating.

RagzRebooted · 16/12/2022 00:30

Off overnight, unless it's exceptionally cold then I will set it to come on if temperature drops below 12, but I have to set it on continuous to do that.
Currently set to come on for an hour from 30 minutes before we get up. Set to 17 but doubt it gets to that. Back on again 3:30pm to 5pm for after school and homework, then on again after dinner until 9:30pm. Bedrooms get to temperature but the living room rarely gets above 15 as it has really old sliding patio doors.

When everyone is at home, I put it on continuous and tweak between 16 and 18 depending on what we're all doing, then down to 12 at night.

Sunnydayz · 16/12/2022 00:36

Usually 5/6pm until about 11pm.
Heats 8C to 16C for the evening, rooms retain a little heat overnight.

I’m home with the baby on maternity leave. The house is cold in the day. I make sure we are both dressed warm, and go for long walks (1-2 hours) every day.

If we’re in all day I would put the heating on for a few hours to take the chill out, but I’d rather go out.

Verbena17 · 16/12/2022 00:38

In the past couple of days ours goes on at 6:30am and stays on until 10:30pm.
Before that, it went on at 6:30-9:30am and then on at 4pm until 10:30pm.

CallieQ · 16/12/2022 00:39

On all day... at the mo around 20/21

My house would not get up to 20° if the heating was only on for two hours!

Tonight I went out and got back at 11pm. The heating was set at 19° until 10pm so had been off for an hour by the time I got home. As I was cold, minus 7° outside, I checked the hall thermostat when I got in and it said 16°, dropped 3° in that hour! I’ve put it up to 19° for a couple of hours while I read in bed then will drop it to 12° overnight when I settle down. I’ve just checked again out of interest and it’s still only 17.5° which surprised me.

This is the first time this year that my heating has been on after 10 pm but I’m fed up of feeling cold in bed with a freezing nose!! Hopefully a few extra hours won’t affect my energy bills too much.

I am just so grateful that I can afford to heat my house to a level which suits me, any increased costs will come out of my savings as I’m retired now but it seems the right time to use my rainy day savings which I worked very hard to accumulate when younger. I’d be in a very different position if this financial crisis had hit 25 years ago, no way could I have afforded my energy bills then.

youhavenoshameonyourface · 16/12/2022 00:46

Mines set to 17.5° from 9am to 8pm . 12° from 6pm till 8am.
I'd rather be comfortable with jumpers all day rather than very warm twice a day. Gonna treat us to 18° on the bank holidays though

So you are trying to be frugal with heating but you have a cleaner every morning who opens all of your windows??! That doesn’t make sense. Why do all your windows needs opening every morning?

Ours comes on an hour before we wake up, normally for a couple of hours. It’s on from around 3pm through to 9pm but the nest controls it all - pre heats etc so it’s not constant.

Agreed... why do you need a cleaner everyday, and why are the windows
Opened everyday?? Surely
You can't or afford heating if you have daily
Cleaning???

Pelo22 · 16/12/2022 00:50

On from 8-8 but only set to be at 17c so it isn't firing up all the time

user53852098 · 16/12/2022 04:59

Surely it would be better to cut down on the cleaner and spend the money saved on heating

Decafflatteplease · 16/12/2022 15:05

Ours is on 6-8am so it's warm when dc get up.

Then 4-7pm.

I've been putting it on for an hour at lunch time though the last few days. Literally sat here shivering now though!

Already pay £300 a month and it will apparently be £500 a month when our fix ends in Jan, can't risk it going any higher!

LastNCof2022 · 16/12/2022 19:20

To the PPs asking about the daily cleaner: we foster dogs and most of them need house training, so we have accidents. And there is hair EVERYWHERE. So the place needs cleaning daily and we'd rather pay someone than take time from work. As for opening the windows daily, that's the way we like to do it to ensure the place is ventilated and we don't breathe stale air. How often do other people open their windows in this weather?

My bathroom, spare bedroom and main bedroom windows are open all the time, only a bit in this weather, but open all the same.

I don't buy the "stale air" stuff, houses are not hermetically sealed, the doors get opened daily etc, air comes in.

I used to foster dogs, though usually only one at a time. I never considered having a daily cleaner, there's no way we could have afforded that.

ohioriver · 17/12/2022 09:07

How long does it take to run a hoover round and mop accidents with a spray mop?
