Anyone still using their tumble dryer

We are a family of 3 (soon 4) and the washing never ends in our house. Our toddler is constantly messy and covered in food.I would like to wear and outfit more than once but due to my toddler it is impossible and my husband works in construction.I was drying my washing outside but nothing was getting dry and caused condensation on the windows.I have finally caved in and bought a Hoover mid range dryer and Oh my god it is amazing. How I have managed before one I don't know. Are they really so bad like people portrait them to be.Anyway it will only be used during winter months. Can't wait for the spring to come.

We use ours several times a week inc summer. Not hung our washing out for more than 30 years. Once we noted how soft the clothes came out and garden looks better without washing hanging out there, we just dry in the drier.

I had never noted this before when it was common place to hang out the washing is our next-door clothing, the underwear, its so big and they are not shy about it. I think, FFS, at least dry that on your radiators etc.

We did consider it re cent moths fuel price explosion but then we thought about next doors clothing and how cheap and naff it looks. Thanfully we have the money but TBH, it is money down the drain

CatSeany · 22/12/2022 20:34

I use mine once a day. It takes ages for things to dry on the clothes horse and I can't be doing with having damp clothes everywhere. Our bill isn't as bad as I thought it could be though. We're paying 180 a month and that's covering it with about 10-20 quid left over.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/12/2022 20:40

I am using mine but it's a heat pump one so not too costly. I also have a heated airer which means I don't need the heating on full blast all day.

Blanketpolicy · 22/12/2022 20:45

We only use ours for bedding and towels. Everything else goes on airer in front of radiator/or over bath airer, I dont over load them and everything is normally dry in a day or two.

Zippedydoo123 · 28/12/2022 08:31

I use it for towels and linen only too.

Andsoforth · 28/12/2022 08:59

I’m using mine, and it’s a priority for the winter. We can save on heating with extra jumpers or getting out and active more, but a damp house and damp clothes is a serious health hazard.

I’m cutting down on laundry, stain treating instead of washing, and changing the beds less than MN would approve.

RusticChips · 28/12/2022 09:05

i'm using mine, I can't stand the smell of damp washing. I haven't used is as much finishing off on radiators or in the airing cupboard over night.

Anjo2011 · 28/12/2022 16:05

I use mine when I need to. Bedding , towels, hoodies, joggers , anything that takes days to dry. Smaller items get hung on an airer or on a hanger in the airing cupboard.

I put my airer in the spare bedroom as it's out the way but it smells like the washing powder, surf exotic flowers or something. Smells nice not damp anything

ohthehorrorthehorror · 28/12/2022 19:52

Yes, but nowhere near as much as I used to. We have a ceiling airer, and I hang washing on that, and maybe finish it off in the drier. I still tend to tumble the bedding, but compared to last year when practically all washing was tumble dried, it's been used very little. In the summer I hang washing out if possible.

chocolateisavegetable · 28/12/2022 19:54

I use the tumble dryer at night as we’re on a cheap rate at night

Cuppasoupmonster · 28/12/2022 19:56

Yep. No choice - toddler and a dog, I’m pregnant and we cannot live in a mouldy house with damp washing everywhere. I’ll cross the bridge of the bill when I come to it…

I love the smell of washing & washing powder but if your house if not warm and it does not dry quick enough then it has a funny damp smell - thats what I meant

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 28/12/2022 21:11

Im using mine i dont want wet washing hanging all over the house its not good for the 2 severe asthmatics in the family. Ive worked out a load of washing/drying costs about £2.80

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 28/12/2022 21:12

Im spending about £16.80 a week on washing and drying clothes

limitededitionbarbie · 28/12/2022 21:14

Yes. I can't get through it all otherwise

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 29/12/2022 00:36

Household of 5- 2adults and 3 boys = copious amounts of washing 😬🫣🥴😆 I couldn’t do without my tumble dryer, as much as it pains me to use it. I’m not sure if anyone else has recommended this, but I use rubber tumble dryer balls. They cut the dry time by 30%. They do make a bit of noise, but my dryer isn’t inside my house so not an issue to me. They bash the washing about and force the steam out of them essentially. When this dryer goes I’m getting a heat pump one.

lieselotte · 30/12/2022 21:54

I am still using ours, though not very often. I use the clothes horse as well as some things can't go in the dryer anyway but it is useful for things like sheets and towels. We can't put things outside in winter, they simply don't dry, even if it's a sunny day. I tried!

Not when you are in bed though I hope. Please don't, tumble dryers are notorious for going on fire - you need to be awake (and at home) when they are on.

Yep, absolutely! Ours was in the garage. It caught fire and burnt the house down in 9 minutes.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 31/12/2022 10:25

Good lord @ArseInTheCoOpWindow I'm really sorry to hear that.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/12/2022 10:27

Yes, Good Lord indeed! It was 8 years ago now.

But the firemen told me, the majority of house fires are from unattended washers, dishwashers and tumble dryers.

Yet we are being encouraged to use them at night🤷🏼‍♀️

blueflagflyhigh · 31/12/2022 10:52

They say it's about £2.30 a cycle for the dryer!

So I started only using maybe once or twice a week. I worked out if I used it once a day at that price it would cost me about £70 a month just for my dryer!

I was drying everything on the radiators. However the paint has started to peel behind them and we are getting worried about damp etc but heating is on a lot thermostat set to 20. I think it wld prob be ok but I've started using the dryer again this week. I expect my bill for December is going to be about £400+ esp with that cold spell we had earlier in the month.

TheDietStartsTomorrowOrMaybeTheDayAfter · 01/01/2023 18:07

Yup, I use ours practically daily. I think I did 3 loads yesterday. Nothing is drying outside and no way am I putting anything on the radiators and risking damp. It’ll cost more to fix in the end.

BertieBotts · 01/01/2023 21:20

£2.30 is either a very high electricity tariff or an old, inefficient tumble dryer or both.

Mine costs about a euro to dry a load.
