Anyone still using their tumble dryer

We are a family of 3 (soon 4) and the washing never ends in our house. Our toddler is constantly messy and covered in food.I would like to wear and outfit more than once but due to my toddler it is impossible and my husband works in construction.I was drying my washing outside but nothing was getting dry and caused condensation on the windows.I have finally caved in and bought a Hoover mid range dryer and Oh my god it is amazing. How I have managed before one I don't know. Are they really so bad like people portrait them to be.Anyway it will only be used during winter months. Can't wait for the spring to come.

I am only using mine for bedding as my king size sheets don't fit over the airer.

I have an oil filled radiator which I have on low in the room I work in during the day and if I have the clothes airer in the same room, the clothes tend to dry in a day or so. I also have a radiator rack thing that hangs over the top and you can dry a few smaller items on that when the heating does come on.

MugginsOverEre · 13/12/2022 09:31

I'm still using mine and heating the house as normal but I went and got a part time job so our combined income has gone up by a third. It means we haven't felt the COL rise.

username8888 · 13/12/2022 09:34

No. It's about 20 years old and must be massively uneconomical. Things dry overnight on a clothes rack

Atmywitsend29 · 13/12/2022 09:35

We have a condenser drier and we use it pretty much every day. There's very few things that don't go in there.
We wouldn't be without ours. And the house is so cold it takes days for clothes to dry naturally in winter, we'd either have damp clothes hanging around or have to have the heating on all the time.

Waystation · 13/12/2022 09:36

I’m using mine as normal - I have a heat pump one that’s “economical” to use - I can’t stand clothing, towels etc hanging around. Giving up the drier is not an option.

ChristmasRoses · 13/12/2022 09:38

Lighter weight stuff goes on the airer, heavier stuff in the dryer, like jeans and towels. Airer is above the dryer so I get both loads dried for the price of one. I've also taken to wearing fleecy leggings and hoodies that dry faster than jeans and cotton sweatshirts

I remember housewives wearing these, they'd have a few to pop on during the week and it keeps your clothes clean underneath. Much easier to get clean and dry than the clothing underneath - it makes sense now why they wore them

Our grandparents weren't so daft, were they?

CornishGem1975 · 13/12/2022 09:55

Yes I am. I didn't use it April to October but I'm not living with wet washing hanging around, it takes 2-3 days to dry a load.

I have a new heat pump dryer A+++, its very economical to use and I use it a lot.

What make and model is it please. Mine is ancient and I only use to finish towels and underwear. Also I swear it shrinks things

caramac04 · 13/12/2022 09:56

Using mine for everything now. It’s a heat exchange pump type so half the cost to run. We have put all but 3 radiators on frost free so have cut down there. I can’t cope with damp washing everywhere and all the condensation which isn’t good for health or house.
Id rather wear a vest and extra layers with less heating than not tumble dry in the winter.

Justcanttakeit · 13/12/2022 09:58

I wasn’t , I stopped and was not using the heating either but the house was damp even the radiators started going rusty . Condensation everywhere and those of us with asthma all got very unwell. So I got some dehumidifiers, used those , put the heating on low from 1 def and started using the dryer again and I’ll have to pay it off when I can

F4chrissakes · 13/12/2022 09:58

Yes. Our house isn't prone to condensation, but wet washing hanging around would likely change that. We are trying to minimise the amount of washing though e.g sheets get done every other week now etc. It helps that we don't have kids any more!

OnNaturesCourse · 13/12/2022 10:01

Mines is on once or twice a week instead of daily as it once was. I try to wash all the heavier stuff such as jeans and towels together. So one light coloured load and a dark load. The rest of the washing gets put on the rads or pulley at night when our heating is on for a few hours. Usually dry by morning. I've not actually missed the drier as much as I thought I would have.

PainAuChocoless · 13/12/2022 10:01

I feel like we have no choice but to use ours still. We usually dry things on the airers in the conservatory but things simply won't dry or take days and days. We have 2 small children under 3 and a dog meaning we can't wait that long for things to dry.
It's things people don't tend to think about much E.g sofa throws/covers, baby bedding (which we only have a few of so needs drying asap).

WorriedandScared93 · 13/12/2022 10:02

I am using mine as I have a 4 month old and I can't risk the damp. Also she has been ill. I am hoping in the summer it will balance out.

mondaytosunday · 13/12/2022 10:03

I grew up in America where everyone uses one! I just checked because of another thread and the day I used my washer and dryer to do two full loads my electricity usage went up less than about 75p (and I can't say for sure it was just doing that that made it more that day).

SingingSands · 13/12/2022 10:04

I'll use mine a couple of times a week for heavy cottons like towels, bedding, school jumpers. I use the airer for everything else.

My house is small, I don't space for hanging up loads of washing for days on end, creating condensation.

coldec · 13/12/2022 10:07

I use mine as much as I ever have, yes it costs more but it is the only way we can manage in our house so I am happy to pay more. No stealth boast btw, we live from week to week and I claim adult disability payment, but I would rather pay for my dryer which makes my life easier than have an extra couple of pounds in the bank.

WhiskersPete · 13/12/2022 10:08

Can I please ask what people are paying per cycle for their tumble dryers?

About £1 but it'll depend on how much you're paying per unit of electricity. We're still on a fixed tariff which I'm very grateful for!

Newnamefor2021 · 13/12/2022 10:10

I am still using it. My bill is around £400 a month. I don't have the space to air dry it and I have four children so we have a fair amount of washing daily.

Sotiredmjmmy · 13/12/2022 10:15

We are using ours, and more than previously due to life being too busy and a cost we are just going to have to pay, but we are looking at switching to the newer more efficient heat pump tumble dryers

100% this

caringcarer · 13/12/2022 10:17

I'm using mine. I don't want damp washing hanging everywhere and making house damp. I'd rather cut back on other things.
