central heating set on low all day

its set at 14 degrees and it keeps coming on today, house has double glazing and cavity wall insulation, loft is insulated to within an inch of its life. Still though the boiler is kicking in and turning on to keep the temperature at 14 degrees

House is on the cool side but not uncomfortable for me, worried about the cost though last week was highest week yet at £43 and 409kwph

this week though with it being so much colder that is going to cost so much more to keep at same temperature

In two days this week Ive used 150kwph

Are you detached? We are mid terrace and our CH rarely kicks in below 15. I can only think of a handful of occasions since it was fitted in 2014.

NewBootsAndRanty · 09/12/2022 14:12

Ouch. Ive used almost the same amount of gas as you over the last 2 days to keep a 1 bed flat at 18 at night, 21 in the day.

Stuff like turning down TRVs in unused rooms might help?

www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4690421-heating-on-low-all-day-experiment?page=1 might be useful?

ivykaty44 · 09/12/2022 14:58

Are you detached? yes

18 at night, 21 in the day. I just stayed at a friends that had the heating at this temperature, I couldn't sleep properly as I was to hot, I opened the window at night even though it was -4

I've only got it set to those temps because I've got COPD - I don't mind wrapping up in a billion layers etc to keep warm, but it doesn't help change the temperature of the air I'm breathing. Grr.

ivykaty44 · 09/12/2022 21:39

NewBootsAndRanty That must be so difficult for you. It wasn’t a criticism of you, it’s jyst I struggle with the ch at that temperature.

my godmother had COPD and moved to the lizard to avoid frosts, it did help

Our living room was 11 degrees first thing this morning! Heating will have been needed today to maintain even 14 degrees. It’s supposed to be really cold for at least the next week😫

ivykaty44 · 09/12/2022 21:49

I’ve lowered the thermostat to 12 degrees for tonight, it usually sits on 13.5 over night. It does make some noise when it comes on so hopefully it’ll stay of for most of the night- supposed to be ~3 here overnight.

let’s hope it warms up soon

It's taken all day to get my house up.to 18 degrees. We've decided for the cold snap to keep the thermostat at a consistent 17 day and night. I'm sure it'll cost less energy as it worked so hard to warm up today

BooksAreSaferThanPeople · 09/12/2022 21:53

Detached here and mine has been the same.

Set to 18 for two hours morning and evening. 14 the rest of the time. I work from home and wrap up warm but it's been kicking in.

We've got cavity wall insulation, brand new roof with new loft insulation. Windows are shite though so overall the heating is as leaky as a Tory Cabinet member.

I’m sorry, I know this isn’t the point but I’m wondering what your moved to the lizard typo could have been!!

The weather has been appalling for my arthritis. I’ve given up on saving costs because it triggered the worst flare up I’ve had in ages so screw it, my thermostat is back up to 20

Lurchintowardsyourfavouritecity · 09/12/2022 21:59

I assumed she moved to the lizard in Cornwall as it’s warmer down there??

Blackeyesbluetears · 09/12/2022 22:00

I thought the lizard was a place? Isn't it in Cornwall?

NewBootsAndRanty · 09/12/2022 22:01

I'm assuming the Lizard in Cornwall - it's ghe southernmost village in England, so warmer...

ivykaty44 · 09/12/2022 22:12

Yes the lizard is in Cornwall and climate is warmer
