Welcome @AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 it is v friendly in this thread, and supportive.Great

Just a quick post as a v busy week and will catch up at weekend. Great your Christmas shopping is nearly done! 😃

Would have been a LSD, as did nothing but work. £3.64 and £5.67 at coop. But by 6pm realised I had not thought about food, so we ordered takeaway. £30 for pizza delivery for six of us as DS friends are here watching the football, as is DH. I'm not bothered, will stream something on Netflix.

kessiebird · 25/11/2022 20:22

Oh I've mixed my sentences up. And I haven't had wine, I don't really drink 🤣

it's great you've got your Christmas shopping done was a reply for @AlwaysFullOfQuestions22@AlwaysFullOfQuestions22

It’s been a long week here.

Felt really sad visiting Ddad today, he has a big birthday next week. But his dementia is so bad, he just doesn’t have the quality of life anymore. And the care home has covid in it again which meant all the residents were back in their rooms awaiting test results 🙁

Cancelled DD1s swimming lessons today. She no longer wants to do them, she can swim well (better than me). And at £40 a month, it a good chunk of cash saved. Feel bad for doing it though.

WeightoftheWorld · 25/11/2022 22:05

Welcome Always.

Thanks Need I've figured it out. There's not loads of local vegetarian options but there are a few. Might be useful for me and DH the odd night instead of a takeaway potentially so will keep an eye out.

Ended up spending about £30 at ELC online last night for Xmas prezzies for DS.

Todays spends: just £2 on the bus home from DD's French class. DH was meant to pick us up but then had an issue with the courtesy car can you believe it so couldn't. Had to get the RAC out and everything. Our own car is fixed though and will be returned tomorrow morning woohoo. We all miss it! The courtesy car didnt suit us as a family at all, smaller and a tiny boot in comparison, could barely fit the pram in.

Spent an hour on the phone to bank today to close my help-to-buy ISA and they still couldnt sort it. Fella told me hes escalating it and to call back on Monday. We are meant to be completing on the house purchase very soon so that's stressful.

Alfiemoon1 · 26/11/2022 00:03

Welcome always
spending has been ridiculous all week as I’ve been off work but my Christmas shopping is almost finished and all wrapped just waiting for a few deliveries and need to get a few bits for dm and dsis

spends today £25 it was my nephews engagement party dh is working tonight so didn’t drink and I only had 1 glass of wine in sympathy for him. Had to leave a bit early so dh could go to work and as we were leaving ds who is 17 dropped a full plate of cakes all over the floor doh. Dd has finally made up with her cousin who she fell out with because of knobhead so that’s good same old story d cousin got friends with him then he showed his true colours she also has loads of abusive texts messages from him and at the time dd defended him so they fell out.

lifelongfrugaleer · 26/11/2022 08:12

thats super organized alphie

yes mrs, poor wales

time 💐

went to the farm shop yesterday and spent £££ but a rare treat
picking up my new glasses today and a dog walk before the rain comes in. There is a Christmas festival in town but I doubt will be going due to aforementioned rain which is a shame

Hey y’all. Hope we’re all on. Have been a bit slack here. But have been trying to keep it together.

went to dr yesterday and have increased my meds because I’m struggling at the moment. Dr thought it sensible and I’m hoping even if it’s for a couple of months it’ll help me £50 for appointment.

also £60 on dunelm on brushed cotton duvets for the dc and some Christmas stuff for dm and us.

need to make lists of what I have to do before we go!

WeightoftheWorld · 26/11/2022 10:57

Alfie So impressed you're that organised re Xmas! We have a lot left to buy and sort eek. I'm on AL this coming Wednesday though whilst kids in nursery so hoping to get a lot sorted then. If neither of them end up off sick, DS had his 1yr jabs yesterday so we will see. No temp so far but he's crying a lot from pain in the injection sites, one in particular has swollen quite big and DH said it bled a lot. He won't stand or crawl with the pain poor love.

Em Hope you're ok and that the meds increase helps.

Today should be an NSD for me I hope. DH going to clean our carpets/rugs and DM's with Rug Doctor, he will be picking it up shortly. I've heard mixed things but because we are splitting the cost with DM it will work out about a quarter of the price of getting someone local to clean just ours professionally (I got a few quotes recently).

Taytocrisps · 26/11/2022 11:17

Hi lovely frugaleers.

Hope you're all keeping well. I've been posting more on the Christmas threads but I'm not forgetting about you.

Difficult to be frugal at this time of year when there are so many presents to be bought and Christmas lunches and days out etc. Anyway, I'm more or less finished my Christmas shopping. I may need one or two more stocking fillers for DD. I saw some cute gingerbread tongs in Penneys a few weeks back. They were only €2 or something. Wonder if they still have them? We took down the decorations yesterday so when she's with her Dad tomorrow, I'll see how full her stocking is and if I need to get one or two more things to fill it. In previous years I've made the mistake of buying stocking fillers that were too big for her stocking and only discovering this on Christmas Eve. With the result that she ended up with lots of main presents and a very skinny stocking. Need to avoid that this year.

Frugal wins - I got some reductions in the Black Friday sales. Also signed up to a Pandora newsletter and got money off some earrings for DD.

Frugal fails - I got a letter from the tax office to say that I've underpaid tax by €66 in 2019. I'm PAYE so I'm not sure how that happened. A piece fell off my washing machine drum recently so I think I'll have to replace it in the New Year. The machine is still working but there's a rough bit now exposed which is catching on clothes. My alarm is also playing up so I think I need to get the alarm company out to replace one of the sensors. I pay a maintenance fee with my monitoring fee but somehow I always have to pay something. Oh and I passed a speed check camera yesterday and I was hovering around the speed limit at the time. So I may have been slightly over or slightly under the speed limit. Fingers crossed......

I've read back a few pages.

Weight sorry to hear about your shin issues. Your poor Mum! It's shocking how badly ill and/or elderly patients are treated. Things are equally bad here (probably worse) but we have to pay for treatment which makes it even worse. Or at least, free medical treatment is means tested so they do a calculation based on things like income/no. of kids etc. If you don't work or earn a low income, you'll probably qualify for a medical card. Everyone else has to pay. Either directly at source or by taking out a health insurance policy which entails making monthly payments and then hoping your policy covers the treatment you need. The Santa grotto visit sounds lovely. How old are your DC? It's very stressful trying to combine work and sick kids. Thankfully DD is past that stage now but I remember it well. I used to dread getting that call from the creche.

Curls glad you're finished working on the rental house.

Gen good luck with your promotion hopes.

em hope your DS is feeling better. 3 weeks to your trip! Won't be long coming around now.

Big your weekend sounds lovely (last weekend). Glad things have eased for you a bit financially. Good news about the therapy too - that you think you can manage without it which in turn will free up some money.

Mrs fingers crossed for your Mum that she doesn't catch Covid.

Decaff hope you make a good recovery from your surgery. Take it easy (not easy with kids I know) and mind yourself.

Socathe have a nice time with your parents.

Time that's very sad about your Dad. Fingers crossed he doesn't catch Covid.

NSD so far. We're going to Dublin to see the musical 'Beauty and the Beast'. DDs ticket was a Christmas present in 2020 iirc (present from my sister) and I paid for my ticket at the time, so it won't cost us anything. They've postponed the show several times.

I’ve joined the no spend January thread
we have enough food to feed the street now so shouldn’t need to shop next week

OP posts:
ememem84 · 26/11/2022 18:48

Took the kids swimming this afternoon. I’m now at dsis’ place cat sitting. She’s on a hotel stay. And her old dementia cat needs company.

swomming was to tire the kids out. So hopefully DH has an easy night with them.

needastrongoneagain · 26/11/2022 18:56

Evening folk.

I'm on the no spend January thread too.

Relatively quiet weekend here. £40 accessible taxis for DH, already planned. Lovely visit.

We are using up food in the house tonight, so don't need to cook. I'm on the sofa with a bottle of wine already! Thinking about menu planning...

Yesterday I spent £100 on the gutters being cleaned. We have a huge garden with many established trees, the gutters get filled to the brim very quickly this time of year. DH usually around to sort. I was expecting much more than this and if that's a once a year cost, then I can budget for this. They came when they said and left no mess and piece of mind for me!

CurlsandCurves · 26/11/2022 19:21

Hi @Taytocrisps nice to see you back! That update with all the mentions to everyone is very impressive! Have a fantastic time tonight.

@ememem84 Glad you’ve recognised you need a little extra help, hope the meds get you back in an even keel.

@lifelongfrugaleer i desperately need new glasses, mine are all scratched at the bottom of the lenses from mask wearing and I look over them more than I look through them these days, think varifocals might be needed.

Blitzed the house today, it was needed as I’ve not been well enough to get anything done this week.

And I finally gave in a bought a new iPad. Ours are not holds it battery as long as it’s kept on charge, most apps won’t work on it anymore. It’s 9 years old and stopped being able to download updates at IOS 12. The money came from cash back earned from using our joint account which has been building up for years. So technically free, right?

WeightoftheWorld · 26/11/2022 20:09

Yes very impressed by Tayto's response too. My DD is 4 and my DS is 1.

My NSD took a turn as I forgot we owed DB £25 for an Amazon purchase (he has Prime subscription so we get him to buy and then we pay him back). So took that to him today in cash.

My third evening alone at home on the trot this week which is weird.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 27/11/2022 07:35

Hello only just seen this thread, watching with interest. I'm actually quite excited about being frugal

Socathe · 27/11/2022 08:17

Back from my parents and it was a no spend couple of days for me. Took petrol to get there but my very generous DM even sent me some money towards that without telling me! I think she wants to make sure that money is never a reason I can't visit. Had a lovely time, they keep loads of toys for DS there and he got to see his great grandparents as well who absolutely adore him. Considering he's still been a bit under the weather he did really well.

I usually food shop on a Thursday but DH was frugal and managed without while we were gone so the main shop got pushed back to yesterday. £50 in Aldi and £10 in Tesco to last us until the next weekly food shop on Thursday.

Having a very Sunday Sunday today. Chilling out at home, a scooter ride/dog walk, roast chicken. Should be a NSD. Happy Sunday everyone.

Hi Dexter good to see your positivity!

We don't spend much on the DC, we buy them one present each to unwrap (not even a big thing) and then do them a stocking each. They are absolutely spoiled by relatives so even if we had more money we still wouldn't get them anything else. DD's present-to-unwrap is headphones (cheap Asda kids ones!) and DS's is a plastic nuts and bolts play set from ELC. Me and DH do a stocking for each other too and that's it. So far I have bought him absolutely nothing for it and he seems to have mostly sorted mine which is a complete role reversal than usual! I'm on AL one day next week tho so hopefully get him some bits then. I don't find it economical to do much online shopping for all the small presents and stocking fillers we buy because of having to spend so much on delivery when you're only spending a little on presents, it seems silly. But obviously it's very convenient like.

Today should be an NSD.
