Pasta is 95p for 500g at all the big 4 supermarkets… what even!!

cheapertorent · 31/10/2022 16:28

It was 55p for the exact same size bag in 2019 and 85p ‘price lock for 6 weeks’ two days ago, now it’s 95p all of a sudden? How does that even work?

I really despair. And worry for this country.

Snap. I just looked it up in Aldi because I was curious how much it is here. Its 59c for 500g of fusilli or 1.09 for a kg. Id be surprised if we were cheaper than the UK.

I think UK being more expensive than Ireland for pasta might be Brexit related, ... the gift that keeps on giving

Geamhradh · 31/10/2022 17:43

I'm in Italy and our TV news mentions Ukraine/grain exports every day, afaik it was the biggest exporter of grain to the rest of Europe. Today's lunchtime news said 12 huge cargo ships of grain have been allowed out along a safe transit corridor.
Our supermarket own brand pasta is about 80-90c for 500g, with more premium brands like Rummo, Garofali going up to about €1.15 now.
It's always amazed me that here we pay €2.99 for Rana tortellini/ravioli etc and in Asda last time I looked it was 99p. That was a few years ago though.

My last shop was £125 for 4 from Aldi. Included a fair bit of alcohol dog treats and a pack of 4 steaks loo roll x9 and some wax melts so I was pleased it wasn't more. Lots of fruit in that too and some expensive tomatoes for my mum.

But food is getting crazy expensive and if your on a really tight budget it must be a nightmare!!

Bit off topic, but since you mentioned alcohol - is there an Aldi wine you could recommend?
We’ve started doing our weekly shop there, but haven’t tried their alcohol yet.

Try being gluten free 😜

Yep 😩

WombatChocolate · 31/10/2022 17:50

What’s wrong with the economy pasta which is less than 40p in all supermarkets.
With rising prices, you should at least try it.

Martin Lewis recommends trying a brand down from what you’re used to for everything. Some of the things you won’t like and return to your normal brand, but there will be some which you do like and can save the cash. It’s such an easy approach, and with something like last a, most people will find it want worth laying g double or triple.

Wasn't the Ukraine one of Europe's biggest wheat producers?

Also the summer heatwave and fires killed off a lot of crops elsewhere

It was, and Russia has blocked grain carrying ships from leaving Ukrainian ports, so expect the price to go higher.

Strongest and cheapest - the new (ab)normal😁but Aldi is great - basic shop there for most stuff - top up elsewhere and use the Trolley app to find the best prices for things. But then we are retired and can go through the kerfuffle and have a Lidl/Tesco/Morrisons all within 5 minute walk.

Yes it's £1.10 in Tesco today.

vera99 · 31/10/2022 18:15

The cheapest from Trolley for 500g is indeed 35p

and 23p for their spaghetti

The Tesco cheap brand is 35p for 500g still - pic attached!

That was 19p a bag during lockdown. Then 29p recently

I'm not a big wine drinker but we can the toroloco red wine a fair bit and it's lovely and under £5

vera99 · 31/10/2022 18:39

Aldi takes care with their curation of the limited brands they stock so you can find anything at a price point that will probably be best in class and cheaper than the competition. I've had that Toro Loco and it was surprisingly good for the money. But things come and go so you have to get what they have - their 00 past flout for 85p a kg a while back was nearly as good as £2.80 top-rated Italian brands but it came and went, never to be seen again. This link is fresh from 11 days ago.

“The new abnormal” 😃

MorningPlatypus · 31/10/2022 18:58

I bought a pint of semi skimmed milk from the local Co-op last week and it was £1.

I don't think it's that much in the MnS/BP garage nearby.

PickAChew · 31/10/2022 19:48

It’s not just value stuff that’s shot up in price. I fished some free range sausages out of the freezer, at the weekend that had been on offer at £2.50. The same range have been on offer at £3.20, this month. Mid range Cooked meat that was £5 for two packs is now £6. Seeded bread rolls that used to be £1.50 a pack are now £1.85. The difference is having the option to buy a cheaper product, which people already relying heavily on the value ranges can’t do.

ifonly4 · 01/11/2022 08:21

I went to Lidl yesterday and bought bread £1.09, yogurts £1.69, cheese spread 95p, filter coffee £1.59, walnut loaf £1.19 and prawns £1.85

This time last year they were 79p, 89p, 69p, £1.39, 89p and £1.65. Imake that roughly a 31/32% increase - scary. Some of the products I prefer, some I know are definitely cheaper than the equivalent in Tescos.

Our Tescos don't do the cheap pasta, so cheapest I can get is in Lidl (think it was 69p last time I bought). I can walk to Tescos and Lidl, and I'd have to be doing a massive shop to warrant petrol somewhere else.

ivykaty44 · 01/11/2022 08:23

Included a fair bit of alcohol dog treats and

lol alcohol dog treats?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 01/11/2022 08:30

This is why I’m quite pleased I stockpiled (not a huge amount just bits) pasta like spaghetti, conchiegle (shell) pasta etc.

it’s quite scary though because even if you wanted to make fresh pasta (do you use eggs?) then you’d have to factor in if doing it yourself cost of chicken feed for eggs etc…

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/11/2022 08:32

yes - i have more than one bag of pasta in my cupboard, however it does get used so will need replenishing

ReviewingTheSituation · 01/11/2022 08:35

My colleagues and I were talking about this yesterday. Our conversation turned to pasta usage, as some people get through a bag really quickly. It seems most people (in our office) cook/eat more pasta than they actually need (or want) because they cook by eye, rather than weighing it.

We started weighing all our carbs before cooking a while ago - no we have no waste, and don't find ourselves eating the surplus just because it's there. It's not a deprivation thing - we cook what we consider to be a sensible portion size for us - but it made a difference to how often we were stocking up.

noproblemlove · 01/11/2022 08:38

Not pasta but I went to buy my usual block of unsalted butter from Aldi the other day. Usually £1.45 it is now 1.99! I stood there for ages staring at the price amazed that it's now bloody 2 quid for one block of butter 😤😤
