It was 55p for the exact same size bag in 2019 and 85p ‘price lock for 6 weeks’ two days ago, now it’s 95p all of a sudden? How does that even work?

I really despair. And worry for this country.

I think wheat prices are escalating.

At least it's still a fairly low cost staple even with the price increase but the cumulative effect of everything constantly going up in price is very worrying.

Lysianthus · 31/10/2022 16:40

Aldi everyday essentials penne is 35p for 500g

ZooTropia · 31/10/2022 16:41

Try being gluten free 😜

ThisMustBeMyDream · 31/10/2022 16:42

Yes, I noticed that this weekend and exclaimed to DP at the craziness of it. It has gone up by almost 100%. It was 2 for £1 previously.
Potato waffles were 90p, now £1.40. Salt grinder used to be £1 in 2020. Now £2. Cucumbers have gone up from 45p to 69p since May. So many increases, some which are mind boggling quite frankly!

Kite22 · 31/10/2022 16:43

This is why headline "rates of inflation" aren't always that helpful. they don't reflect the actual increase of things that people have to buy (yes, I know you can live without pasta, but most families don't).

LadyKenya · 31/10/2022 16:44

Well food is going up. I am noticing 10p here, 15p there. It is very noticeable, and obviously cost more every time I shop.

xPeaceX · 31/10/2022 16:45

How much is own brand? just had a look online and tesco own brand spirali is 79 cent in Ireland. For 500grams.

Seems weird that the same product is 95 pence in the UK

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 31/10/2022 16:48

My last shop was £125 for 4 from Aldi. Included a fair bit of alcohol dog treats and a pack of 4 steaks loo roll x9 and some wax melts so I was pleased it wasn't more. Lots of fruit in that too and some expensive tomatoes for my mum.

But food is getting crazy expensive and if your on a really tight budget it must be a nightmare!!

Snap. I just looked it up in Aldi because I was curious how much it is here. Its 59c for 500g of fusilli or 1.09 for a kg. Id be surprised if we were cheaper than the UK.

JaninaDuszejko · 31/10/2022 16:50

Interestingly De Cecco pasta is the same price it has been for ages but I suppose the premium brands can absorb the increases in the raw materials prices more. If that is repeated across the board it will mean families who are better off are probably experiencing less food inflation than poorer families.

CapturedLeprechaun · 31/10/2022 16:51

The Tesco cheap brand is 35p for 500g still - pic attached!

Just had a look on the app and Spirali Tesco own brand 500g is 95p but they do a cheaper brand but only penne for 35p which price matches Aldi apparently.
I always get the 3kg bags of Fusilli which is apparently £4 in Tesco although I actually don't remember how much they were previously

Blowyourowntrumpet · 31/10/2022 17:01

Not in Asda. And 500g of spaghetti is 28p

Wasn't the Ukraine one of Europe's biggest wheat producers?

Also the summer heatwave and fires killed off a lot of crops elsewhere

gogohmm · 31/10/2022 17:07

I paid 70p in Lidl for wholewheat spaghetti last week. Was 50p fairly recently. Sunflower oil was £2.09 today!)

SleepyAnkylosaurus · 31/10/2022 17:08

This stuff is a great all-rounder, and 70p per kilo.

I've started to feel a little unmoored every time I go to the supermarket.

Without really trying to and without really realising it, I've always had a background awareness of what the things I commonly buy tend to cost. Things might creep up over time, but generally, week-to-week the price on the shelf under each product felt familiar to me. I might not have been able to quote the price of a packet of pittas or a litre of UHT or a cucumber off the top of my head, but there was a kind of background awareness going on. If a single item was suddenly a lot more expensive, I'd notice because the price felt unfamiliar and strange — it's not that I knew every price to the penny, but prices would generally feel about right.

Now, when I go in the supermarket, I feel I have no real idea what to expect things to cost, there's no comfortable feeling that the prices on the shelves will be more or less what I think they'll be, none of the numbers feel familiar and I'm having a hard time deciding whether I think each item is worth what they're asking because my points of reference have all disappeared.

It's like… it's a bit like I've been a kid at the same school for years, and until recently I knew my cohort, their faces were all familiar, and occasionally there'd be a new kid but it was manageable. But now, every time I go, it's full of strangers.

500g of spaghetti is 20p in Lidl

RudsyFarmer · 31/10/2022 17:21

This absolutely is the Ukraine war. This is the way I look at it. I’m grateful it’s on the shelves and I can feed my kids. I’m definitely making different decisions and going off brand. But I’m just stupidly grateful food still exists in the shops. I know it’s a low bar.

This is true sadly. Lower income households spend disproportionately more of their income on the essentials that have increased in price the most. The rate of inflation they are experiencing is probably far more than the current measured rate of 10%.

You're also probably right about lower increases in premium products. A few days ago I bought fish and chips - all the small local ones have put their prices up a lot recently, but they were closed on the day I went so I went to the chain outlet that was previously the expensive option. However, their prices haven't risen much, if at all, so were now quite a bit cheaper than the previously cheaper small independents.

But OP, it's hardly a surprise and might not be the end of the rises - as well as the war in Ukraine, it's been a bad year for harvests due to the drought, both of which causes prices to rise, and that's before we account for the increases in fertiliser and energy/fuel.

Food has been relatively cheap for years and we're probably going to have to get used to it costing a lot more than it used to.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 31/10/2022 17:34

i am also shocked at the price of pasta.
stocking up is expensive
i used to buy two for £1 in asda, i think that was 2020

The reason "headline" rates are so high is mostly down to food and fuel. Other costs aren't rising so quickly (still to quick mind)
.

i think there was a ukraine ship bombed?
and also Ukraine is the bread basket of the world it is said.

BlueBar · 31/10/2022 17:38

I've just lost two bags to mice.! The little wotsits have left me with one entirely empty bag and one more than half gone (which obviously had to be binned). Traps went down a few days ago and as far as I can tell there were only two!
