What is going on with my electric meter?

If I'm reading it right, it says we have used 1kWh in the month of September. This is impossible, right? We have a fridge, freezer, oven, washing machine, etc. We don't sit in the dark. Our bills have always been very low - worried now that this is because our meter is on the blink.

Or maybe I'm reading it wrong? Is there some kind of multiplier (e.g. x1000 - so actually we've used 1000kWh)???

I'd guess 100, ours was 85.

What sort of meter (dials or numerical)?
Do you have a record of your readings?

Hellocatshome · 01/10/2022 20:09

What did it say before and what does it say now? Including any decimal points

Dials. And yes, we regularly submit readings.

Can you post a picture of the dials and we can see if we get the same reading

End of last month it said 58648.5
This month it's 58649.7

Dial meters are often incorrectly read. Can you post a photo.

Ah, not the sort of dials I meant
Yeah that is easy to read
58649

What was the previous reading?

dementedpixie · 01/10/2022 20:17

1kwh seem unlikely

Hellocatshome · 01/10/2022 20:18

Ah yes I meant dials that look like little clocks. Those sort of dials are fairly obvious. You will definitely have used more then 1kwh so either your previous reading was incorrect or your meter is faulty. Can you boil the kettle and see if the red number has moved?

58648! At the end of August. Unless there's a multiplier (not stated on the meter) it's impossible.

Sounds like something is wrong with your meter

Hellocatshome · 01/10/2022 20:20

Nope there isn't usually a multiplier for electricity as it measures in KWH. Gas needs a multiplier as it measures in cubic feet or meters.

MinervaTerrathorn · 01/10/2022 20:21

Could the previous reading be wrong, such as out by 100 if the 6 was a 5? Do you have other readings to show earlier usage?

Boiled the kettle. No movement. 😬

Balls.

I used to work in a department that dealt with this all the time. Take a reading and a photo at roughly the same time each day for the next 7 days then contact your electricity provider. If you call them to say your meter is faulty this is the first thing they will ask you to do so may as well get ahead of the game.

FlimFlam2 · 01/10/2022 20:27

@Hellocatshome Will do, thank you! Hopefully we won't get a massive retrospective bill. 😥

Oh, maybe! I don't have a photo of the previous reading. I will do what another poster has suggested and check daily for the next seven days.

You shouldn't. They should be able to work out the last accurate read you have then they estimate on from there but based on your usage for the same period in the previous year and obviously based on the unit prices you should have been charged for the time period in question.
