What is your annual kWh usage for gas and electricity please?

Can someone tell me what their annual usage (known or projected) in kWh is for each of their utilities?
I know ours has been high in the past but we had a new born in December last year and so had the heating on a lot.
Nonetheless current projections from our company would work out at a cost of £5-6k a year from October. That’s with the price cap. I can’t believe we are using twice the National average amount but it seems we must be or at least must have done last year.

We live up North - it’s cold. The house is insulated but only partially double glazed. Boiler is new-ish (7 years old maybe) and it’s a combi boiler. Not our house so we can’t control that or the glazing. It’s an old house, 4 bed semi. We have a baby and a 5 year old and we both work from home. Haven’t turned the heating on at all yet. Once baby goes to nursery in November and I return to work we won’t have the heating on during the day and will just grin and bear it but we’ll have to have a bit in the evening I think.

Thank you!

We are about 16,000 kWh for gas and 5500 for electricity, so pretty high users, but we do tumble dry and wash a lot and use gaming computers. Four-bed detached in north of Scotland. Two adults, 3yo and 3mo.

Shinyhappyperson22 · 28/09/2022 17:22

There are loads of thread the same as this recently but I’ll go. We used 10500 kwh gas and 1316 kWh electric. Low users. 3 bed 30s semi. North west. 2 of us : one WFH

TheBeesKnee · 28/09/2022 17:23

It's your house detached, semi etc?

We love in a mid terrace 3 bed and in 2020 ours was:
Gas: 6168 gas
Electricity: 1941

Can't find data from 2021 but this year so far:
Gas: 5068
Electricity: 1957

Hugasauras · 28/09/2022 17:25

£6k a year must be very high usage indeed! We are about £3000 I think come October.

Cynderella · 28/09/2022 17:26

As said - many threads on this already. We are high users and I am trying to address that, but we'll never be as low as other households that don't have people WFH, gaming etc.

Other people's annual usage won't tell you much - it's yours that matters! When I was home all day with small children, our usage was low because we couldn't afford anything else. If you work out what you can afford a year, you can work out how much you can afford to use.

We haven't got the heating on - it's grim :-(

CollieWobble22 · 28/09/2022 17:29

5000 KWH Gas
1744 KWH Electricity

2 bed house, 2 reception room, 2 outdoor converted offices. WFH

2 adults and one child. Lots of laundry, dishes, cooking, Xbox and TV.

gogohmm · 28/09/2022 17:30

2814 for electricity
8365 for gas

Fairly low 3-5 adults depending on whether it's term time.

gogohmm · 28/09/2022 17:31

I should say 4 bed townhouse

DoodlePug · 28/09/2022 17:33

We're high users (dryer always on!) but pretty much on track with the current cap paying £300 a month but company has doubled that for October.

The new cap isn't a huge rise so they're having a laugh. I've never been too good with meter readings so am now doing them weekly and the projected spend is coming down.

I have heard that this is happening to lots of people who don't have smart meters, possibly to 'encourage' them to fit them. They won't fit one for us due to access problems so we're stuck.

TwoBlueFish · 28/09/2022 17:36

Ours are s about 5000 electric and 17500 for gas.

4 bed semi 1930’s in the northwest

ActonBell · 28/09/2022 17:38

Sorry - I’d seen threads on bills but not one that gave kWh usage figures.
We were paying £3000 a year so I’m trying to work out whether this projection is based on unusually high usage last winter. I’m going back over the history of our usage but was just interested to see what others manage with.

How much of a difference does the lack of double glazing on some windows make do you think? And being in an old house?

3 bed semi, townhouse style. South East. Double glazing, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. 3 teens and 2 adults.
5,500kwh electricity and 8,000 gas.

A lot. Was there an energy certificate on the listing when you rented, or can you see neighbours ones on recent online sales listings? They vary a lot, depending on style of house and insulation/windows.

MinervaTerrathorn · 28/09/2022 17:40

1100 electric and 5100 gas
Two of us in a three bed semi in the SW
It will be just under £1200 a year

SquigglePigs · 28/09/2022 17:47

About 4000 electric and about 24000 gas. We have a 5 bed detached so a lot of space to heat. We also have solar panels so the 4000 is what we pay for, the solar panels cover some more (about 1-2k).

ActonBell · 28/09/2022 17:54

So it’s the gas usage that’s particularly foxing me. Such a wide range on this thread alone - 5,000 to 22,000! We’re definitely on the higher end especially last year, so that’s where we’ve got to cut back.
Cooker is electric so it’s just heating and hot water. Will have to look at what we can do with getting the house to hold its heat better.

OP posts:
SlipperyLizard · 28/09/2022 17:56

We use about 15000 gas and 6000 electric - but at those gas levels our house is pretty cold most of the winter.

The “average” household on which price cap predictions are based has 2.3 people in it, so that’s why your (and my) usage seems high - we are 4 people in a larger than average house.

I’ve invested in a heated poncho for WFH (only used it once so far), but am also always wearing thermal underwear & an oodie (or a knock off one!).

We prefer cooler bedrooms but have electric blankets to stop the bed itself from being freezing.

Mum5net · 28/09/2022 17:57

4 Bed End Terrace
Up North, wet & cold
Gas. 30, 474 kWh
Elec 4,904 kWh
5 yr boiler
Heatrae Sadia water cylinder

BMW6 · 28/09/2022 17:58

2021 we used

Gas 10540 kwh
Electric 1840 kwh

We're in a 2 bed terrace. Both home all day, CH on Oct - May 7am to 11pm.

Will be cutting down a lot this year.

PledgeDusterMop · 28/09/2022 18:01

We’re high users. Household of 4 adults, 2 with disabilities.
We have a 3 bed, 1930’s semi, it’s a draughty house even with double glazing.
We have a gas combo boiler but all electric for cooking.
In 2021 we used
Gas-27,000kwh
Elec- 7000kwh
However this year we are on course to use less electricity but heating has to be a priority due to disabled household members .
We are very worried

frozendaisy · 28/09/2022 18:53

Ok so looking at price caps and our new "tariffs" based on our last full year of usage (nov 20-nov21) if everything remains the same, but bearing in mind our usage especially for electric was a bit high as full time WFH, homeschooling , everyone in, heating on, everything electric plugged in: but based on all this and our new prices, standard average semi-detached, 2 adults, 2 teenage kids.

New prices:
£2600 day time electric
£62 night time electric
£168 electric yearly standing charge

£841 gas
£103 standing charge gas

so a grand total (possibly) of
£3774
£314 per month DD (fucking hell)

This doesn't include the money off. We currently pay £220 a month up from 115 earlier in the year.

So almost tripled in 12 months.

frozendaisy · 28/09/2022 18:56

for information this was on:
annual usage
daytime electric 5496kwh
night time electric 897 kwh
gas 11093 kwh

Dannexe · 28/09/2022 19:01

We are predicted to use about 10000kwh of electricity. I don’t think we will use that much but we’ve already used more than 6000 this year. We don’t have gas, our heating and hot water are oil.

We are in a large 5/6 bed detached, isolated on the south Yorkshire border. Two adults working from home and two older teens.

I think we will end up at about 8000kwh of electric

mewkins · 28/09/2022 19:08

7200kwh gas and 2200kwh electric.

Three bed semi - I have a new boiler though which is pretty efficient and there's me and 2 children here.
