What is your annual kWh usage for gas and electricity please?

Can someone tell me what their annual usage (known or projected) in kWh is for each of their utilities?
I know ours has been high in the past but we had a new born in December last year and so had the heating on a lot.
Nonetheless current projections from our company would work out at a cost of £5-6k a year from October. That’s with the price cap. I can’t believe we are using twice the National average amount but it seems we must be or at least must have done last year.

We live up North - it’s cold. The house is insulated but only partially double glazed. Boiler is new-ish (7 years old maybe) and it’s a combi boiler. Not our house so we can’t control that or the glazing. It’s an old house, 4 bed semi. We have a baby and a 5 year old and we both work from home. Haven’t turned the heating on at all yet. Once baby goes to nursery in November and I return to work we won’t have the heating on during the day and will just grin and bear it but we’ll have to have a bit in the evening I think.

Thank you!

2021 - 3583 electric and 16 597 gas. 3 bed mid terrace. No idea why it’s so high. No tumble dryer. Everything unplugged when it’s finished. Boiler is on timer for 4 hours a day. Plus the loft is insulated and windows double glazed. When we were away the only thing that was powered was the fridge. I switched the boiler off at the wall. Yet I was still charged £3 a day combined.

MrsPear · 29/09/2022 10:05

I’ve 600 kWh this month on gas and ive had zero heating on - just hot water twice a day 2 hours. How?!

littlepeas · 29/09/2022 10:49

I'm ashamed to say we haven't made much effort to keep our usage down:

5725 electricity
16893 gas

This is a mid terrace townhouse (so 3 storey), 2000 sq ft - very well insulated, new boiler, good windows. We're in the midlands. Family of 5.

We are making an effort now and I can see it coming down already, but we haven't had to put the heating on yet!

HollyJollyXmas57 · 29/09/2022 21:26

Last year was

gas 6,945kWh

electricity 3,437kWh

PeloFondo · 29/09/2022 21:30

2000 kWh electric
6000kwh gas

FlutterbButterfly · 29/09/2022 21:44

Home counties, 4 bed average sized, modern house.

10000 gas
7500 electricity

But we do run a plug in car.

Showers? Do you have boiler that gives hot water on demand?

If so how many showers a day and how long is each shower taking?

We used 350 for 3 months use, no heating. Equiv of 2 showers or a shower and a shallowish bath a day.

Do you have an immersion heater? Could you check it a few hours apart with noone having a shower or bath to see if it's still going up? Maybe I overnight?

SlipperyLizard · 30/09/2022 17:52

@MrsPear we've used 240kwh of gas this month, no heating on so just shower/hot water (oh and one gas ring), but we have a combi boiler so only heat on demand. Do you have a water tank?

EdHelpPls · 30/09/2022 17:53

Also I remember reading somewhere, maybe even here on mn, to reduce the time heating your water by 15 mins at a time til you realise youve run out of hot water, then go back up one increment, or reduce time in shower/depth of baths.

MinervaTerrathorn · 30/09/2022 18:03

Running figures on the mse calculator. Even if we could cut 20% off our gas usage it would only save £100. Electricity is pretty consistent year round, £550. Gas is £630, £110 of that is the standing charge, so £520 usage. Of the usage, some is hot water and cooking, neither of which are excessive. So that leaves less than £400 for heating, the only bit we could make any savings on.

Raidtheice · 30/09/2022 18:10

You will probably be losing a lot of heat through not having double glazing. If you can't get that in, you need to start putting stuff on or around the windows to insulate them. Thermal curtains are probably the most straightforward. I find even having my blinds shut in the cold keeps drafts out.

Shareornotwhocares · 30/09/2022 18:12

15000kwh electricity- koi pond and hot tub and too lazy to hang out washing or turn things off. Plate warmer already been on for an hour for a take away not due until 1915

9000kwh gas - five bed detached, two adukts

but we can afford it so …… the price cap has saved me a fortune

InCheesusWeTrust · 30/09/2022 19:37

You can create relatively cheaply a secondary glazing.
2mm-5mm acrylic plastic sheets, you can use rubber or plastic ends around it and fit them infront of your single glazed window. Or even on the frame.
It will make massive difference even on double glazed btw. Massive

MrsPear · 30/09/2022 22:39

@SlipperyLizard yes we have a water tank but immersion switch is off. The only suggestion from British Gas is that I cook daily. But it’s gas hob and electric oven.

ActonBell · 04/10/2022 13:22

Thanks everyone. I’m definitely going to address the windows. One even has an actual hole! I’ve sealed that today and put up a thermal curtain we already on that window. It’s too long but it’s not about aesthetics right now!

It’s 16 degrees inside at the moment. We haven’t had the heating on at all yet. Trying to use the slow cooker whenever we can. Bit worried about it being too cold for the 10 month old. He’s not slept well the past couple of nights. 5 year old seems fine with it but he is Asthmatic so we need to be careful. I go into shutdown mode a bit when I’m cold which isn’t great as I need to get stuff done around the house and that’s hard enough with a baby at the best of times!

Sometimes when I read these threads I wonder whether it's a competition to see who can use the most.

Some of these figures seem completely insane to me.

I guess people do have very different numbers of people in the house, plus a huge variation in house size as well. It's difficult to compare someone living on their own with a family of four with young kids who need a lot of clothes washing.

I don't see there point of this. Every house is different isn't it. Makes no sense to ask what others use?
Look at your bills to see how much you use

Don't be daft! You will still pay more 🤣
ITS NOT A CAP ON THE PRICE

@Shareornotwhocares
You are clearly trolling

Lavendersquare · 04/10/2022 14:16

I feel your pain, I know that our annual usage is definitely higher than average but when you see that translated into costs of £5900 for the year it's awful. To put it in perspective last year when I had a cracking deal, I paid around £2400 as a combined figure.

We both wfh, but won't be having the heating on as much as last years and I'm trying to time all the big electrical items (washing machine, dishwasher & tumble dryer) to come on during the cheaper nighttime electricity.

It's not even been a week since the price hikes and I'm already exhausted and fed up of washing hanging about the house and telling of DH for putting the dishwasher on at 8pm!

Unphased · 04/10/2022 14:17

3784 Electric
6212 Gas
4 Bed, 4 people house, southwest

Filleto · 04/10/2022 14:28

Ours is ridiculous
8000 kWh electricity
20000 kWh gas

heating was only on for 3-4 hours a day nov-March last year and hot water an hour each morning and evening so hardly extravagant use but we are an 8 bedroom house with 8 people living in it

although we have been trying to cut it down and projections for next 12 months is 6000kwh electricity and 18000 kWh gas so fingers crossed we can get it even lower.

Actually I have found it really helpful. I can look at our bills and our projections and at the ofgem averages but it makes more sense when I hear from real people who can add in extra information like whether they work from home and what age their house is. I was feeling totally crap about our consumption not being closer to the average but this thread suggests (anecdotally of course) that some in a similar position to us are struggling but also that it is possible to aim for a reduction.
Also we had really weird consumption last year because we had a newborn so our projections for this year don’t actually make that much sense.

ITS NOT A CAP ON THE PRICE

I know that! What I mean is I can afford what ever the bill is but on the original rate our electricity and gas would have been £7650 and £1350 for gas so a total of £9000

the guarantee changes that to £5100 and E900 or £6000

Saving £3000

That will pay for my planned trips to Monaco for the Grand Prix and a cruise
