What is your annual kWh usage for gas and electricity please?

Can someone tell me what their annual usage (known or projected) in kWh is for each of their utilities?
I know ours has been high in the past but we had a new born in December last year and so had the heating on a lot.
Nonetheless current projections from our company would work out at a cost of £5-6k a year from October. That’s with the price cap. I can’t believe we are using twice the National average amount but it seems we must be or at least must have done last year.

We live up North - it’s cold. The house is insulated but only partially double glazed. Boiler is new-ish (7 years old maybe) and it’s a combi boiler. Not our house so we can’t control that or the glazing. It’s an old house, 4 bed semi. We have a baby and a 5 year old and we both work from home. Haven’t turned the heating on at all yet. Once baby goes to nursery in November and I return to work we won’t have the heating on during the day and will just grin and bear it but we’ll have to have a bit in the evening I think.

Thank you!

We're currently forecast to use 15000 gas, 4000 electricity but are using less than last year which is likely to continue, 4 bed, gas ch and hob, electric oven.

Is there a way of working out the kwh annual usage?

Eon have told us that ours is almost 20000kwh annual usage and I am wondering if it is incorrect as we are quite frugal. 3 bed semi detached house with 4 people. We give monthly meter readings but I'm convinced that the usage figure is too high.

SlipperyLizard · 05/10/2022 12:09

@Wonderwoman333 if you’ve been with Eon a while you should be able to access past meter readings, so you can see what you’ve used in the last 12 months.

If you give monthly meter readings then is it not just a matter of adding up all these readings for the past 12 months to get your annual usage ?

Your electricity will be in kwh, so easy to calculate.

Your gas in either cubic meters (modern) or cubic feet (older). It should say on the meter (m3 or ft3). Convert m3 to kwh (roughly) by multiplying by 11.

If you are using 20000kwh on only electric then that is very high. If it's electric and gas then less so, but still there should be some scope for reduction.

20000kwh. Whatya growing there😁

Tootlingalong · 05/10/2022 20:36

8000 electric
11000 gas
4 bed new build detached, north east, 3 children, 2 adults, 1wfh in the conservatory, 7 TVs and tumble dry everything 🙈,
I'd definitely recommend an Infra red thermometer I checked last winter - all walls, corner where skirting meets wall, around external doors and windows etc for cold spots, it also told me how thermal my curtains were etc. I have blinds and curtains on most windows now.

Look at your online account.

2800 for electricity and 6000 gas. In a 3 bed new in 2019 detached house. 2 of us. SE England.

1800kwh for electricity and probably about 2500 litres of heating oil. This is for five bed, four bathroom house.

Fortunately we are south facing and have 16 PV panels. Last year allowing for the feed in tariff payments from the PV panels electricity cost was about £35 per month.

Wonderwoman333 · 07/10/2022 11:48

I've looked through all of the statements and we do seem to be using almost 20000 kwh of gas annually. I have no idea how as we are very careful with it. We are going to turn down the temperature on the boiler and see if that has any effect.

GasPanic · 07/10/2022 12:03

It's a lot of gas. Equates to leaving your heating on maybe 2 hours per day all year round.

I would start off by looking at the split between winter and summer. In summer you should use hot water only. In winter hot water plus heating.

If your bill shows very low use in say August but with a huge use in December, it is probably your heating. if there is less difference between your winter and summer it implies it is the hot water.

How is your electricity bill in comparison ?

Do you have a combi boiler (fires up when you turn on the hot water tap) or system boiler (big tank in a cupboard somewhere) ?

3 bed 1930's detached bungalow, 5 people living here (3 adults and 2 teens), 14,000 kWh gas, 6,000 kWh electricity last year.

We already knew we were quite high users anyway, so we had decided to improve the insulation as we renovate - adding additional loft insulation, insulating all the pipes under the floor in the new extension/throughout the house eventually, and we are also planning to insulate under all of the suspended floors as we redo each room...

Unfortunately, the house is a bigger project than we anticipated and so this is a long term plan - we're doing all the work ourselves around working full time and the costs for building materials just keep increasing as well...

We're also trying to cut down on our usage as much as possible, but the cost of energy is still worrying, even with the 'price freeze' recently announced!

4000 kWh electricity (no gas). Far north of Scotland, 3-bed semi.
