Anyone not going to have heating on at all ?

Bycandlelight22 · 24/09/2022 12:01

So apparently my electric bill is going to be 2344.57 a year. And my gas will be 3363.23 a year.

According to the bill I just got between 8th-15th September I used 29.82 in electricity. And between 8th--15th September I used 2.22 in gas.

When winter sets in I'm planning on not having the heating on at all. We will wear extra layers and have blankets etc. Then my gas should be very simlar to what it is now?

I have heard that I could save money by using an air fryer ? And simlar gadgets is this true or is it just a trend ? Are they suitable for large familys ? Is there anything else that could help ?

@Bycandlelight22 you carry on doing that!! When it gets to mid October do a couple of testers with heating, put it on for an hour and a half in morning and then from 5.30 to 9 , set thermostat at 20 and then check after say 10 days - you will have a much better idea of your 'actual use' - and can adjust accordingly- I say mid October as the new prices are in, as are the rebates!

I would def look at that electric use though-does seem quite high--but it may be you wash/dry way more than I do

Op you’re saying uou won’t even put it on a couple of hours a day. That it’s “heat or eat” so yes this is signficant poverty.

Oh I'm not so sure now. From what a few posters have said I'm starting to wounder if I'm over worrying about it. So hopefully that's the case.

If not then maybe fuel poverty. But I think alot of people are in a similar situation.

I will do that definitely worth a try. I'm not sure with the electric. I don't
Use a dryer . Obviously have tvs and the white good being used. Not really sure with that one.

Electricity 3818kwh and gas 20600kwh

The average British household has 2.4 people living in it and uses 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas.

Judging by this your electricity is a little above average but then you have more than 2.4 people in your household. Your gas however is much higher than the average and is something to look at.

Comedycook · 24/09/2022 19:05

I hate being hot. I put the heating on because I have kids but I'm fine with no heating unless the weather hits freezing. My house is fairly modern and I live in London though.

SquirrelSoShiny · 24/09/2022 19:18

Does anyone know if there's such a thing as mould testing? We had a leak and I'm convinced I can smell it.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/09/2022 19:23

@dementedpixie Thing is , it's a new house , she's never had a winter bill there, so the energy company appear to have plucked the figure from thin air.

I have always had pre payment meters in the past. So I have never had an actual bill. So I could be where I'm seeing figures infront of me that throws me off. So I'm going to try not worry to much. And do what the poster a few post up said. Carry on how I am. And test the heating costs in a month or so.

@ImNotGreta why do you assume she has? And what has her being unmarried got to with absolutely anything? If you don’t believe her, report her, no need for your sneering attitude.

InterestQ · 24/09/2022 21:11

Nolongera - thank you, that’s very helpful - I will try an experiment when it gets a bit colder and see what happens if I stick it on for an hour in the morning!

GuyMontag · 24/09/2022 21:19

@SquirrelSoShiny during that winter I lived in what was basically an unheated slum with my then baby, our landlord did actually have the cheek to send round a surveyor because he was remortgaging. The guy had some kind of device that he put against the wall to check moisture levels. I've no idea what it recorded. The place was fucking dripping and slugs were coming in under the carpet. This guy came in and did his thing and then I never saw him again.

So, you can buy things that tell you they measure moisture. Maybe they work, probably they do. But I couldn't tell you because I didn't get the results of a guy doing that when I lived in a damp house.

Suzi888 · 24/09/2022 21:21

If it’s freezing then you should put the heating on even if only 30 mins to prevent burst pipes and damp. It could end up costing you more not to.

I struggle with the heating as my Lab can’t overheat due to his medication, he hates heat. I have had it on in the past and opened windows and the back door😣 for the dog.

Heated throws are 7p an hour (at the mo) if you get a large then you could all snuggle on the sofa. They heat up fast, few mins. Moving also helps, run up and down the stairs, it gets the circulation going. Have a bath, doesn’t have to be deep, share the water. You’ll use less than a shower (maybe) you’ll have to check.
If push comes to shove perhaps watch tv /books/ play board games in bed with an electric blanket.

Get a smart meter so you know how much you are using. DH is obsessed, 🙄 with his little gadget. We are currently at £100 a month for gas and electric I think. Not had heating on yet.

DH feels hot all the time, I usually feel the cold but bit peri so maybe not this year.

Our neighbours don’t appear to have conventional heating. They’re elderly and he collects wood and has mentioned an open fire place, chimney, wood on stone floor from what we gathered. No central heating. Old wooden windows. Shared bath water and they water plants with it after. This is all by choice (possibly his choice!).

You should be ok in a new build I’d have thought.

As a child we had the old fashioned gas bottle type fire in the kitchen. Depending how large your room is, they’re very handy. You can’t go over, you just use what you have in the bottle.

I have a smart meter which makes it easier. I have decided I'm definitely going to put the heating on and see how it gos . I was making an assumption without even trying first.

Apologies if already said but are you eligible for any extra support op if one child is on DLA? In addition to the £400.

SnoozyLucy7 · 25/09/2022 20:39

This is such a sad thread. 21st century modern Britain and so many people are too frightened to put the heat on because of the insanity of the price hikes on energy bills, otherwise risk going into unfordable debt - just to heat the house for an hour or 2 in deepest winter!. And the government is not really doing enough. It’s just utter and complete madness!

Always4Brenner · 25/09/2022 21:26

We’re using electric heaters once room is warm lower the temperature. Warm quilts as well. But windows need to be open for ventilation to prevent mould so open even if only an hour a day.

I think I get 150 . I never got the 150 council tax rebate though as my council tax band was not in the right banding for it . Then I found out there was discretionary payments. Which I did not know about until it was to late and applications were closed 😔. I think i do get the 150 because of the dla so that will help

Is it not the energy producers that have the profits rather than the energy suppliers?

Oblomov22 · 25/09/2022 22:09

We will have the hearing on as normal. I refuse to live in the cold. I just won't do it. I refuse.

AsterixInEngland · 25/09/2022 22:41

@Bycandlelight22 , it seems that many people have had their DD set up at a very high level, much higher than what they should be paying and the energy companies are refusing to back down and reduce the DD EVEN THOUGH, with the same usage, it’s Lear they won’t be paying that much.

I would cancelling your DD and paying monthly for what you have actually used rather than what they think you have used.
No point sending a reading every 2 weeks if they are not going to take it into account!!
I would be careful that it also means you would be paying more let’s say in January/February when it’s colder so you might need to plan ahead for that.

Except the OP is hardly using any gas atm - only for the cooker.
This is what makes me think they are estimates from the energy company, plucked out if thin air in a way that benefits them. And not reflecting the reality of her usage.

I've lived in my house for seven years and the only time the heating's ever been on is when the engineer comes to do the gas check.
I live alone, and l heat the room l'm in with a gas fire. There's furniture (a sofa and a big sideboard) in front of the two radiators in there and nowhere else to place them, so no point having it on.
I have an electric blanket for bed, so long as the bed's warm l don't mind the room being cold.
I do sometimes leave the airing cupboard door open on the landing (the hot water tank's in there, it has a jacket, but it still throws a bit of warmth out) to warm the upstairs up a bit.
I have, in the past used my heated airer just to take the chill off rooms, which worked really well, and cheap as chips to run.
I'll be doing the same this year. But my best friend knows what l do, and very kindly gave me a gorgeous bright pink heated throw last year. It's wonderful if you're on the sofa watching tv/reading, etc, and suprisingly cosy. And it's big. Not just like a lap blanket, easily double bed size.
I do wear two/three layers all over, including socks/slipper boots, I have arthritis and the cold makes it worse.

I already do this I do a reading once or twice a week. And I pay straight away with my card on line . Do not have a direct debit set up

I'm glad you find ways to keep warm. There does not seem much point in heating a whole house if your just in one room.

You reminded me I Need to buy a heated airer. My sister said they don't work well. But your post seems to indicate they do. So I'm going to get one.
